Typhoon Gaemi was a very powerful July storm which impacted Taiwan. The storm became the strongest to make landfall in Taiwan in the month of July since Typhoon Nepartak in 2016. Gaemi started out near Micronesia, and only developed as it was cruising east of the Philippines and heading northwesterly. The storm stalled a little and drew nearer to Luzon, starting a sustained barrage of rainfall for the region which caused major flooding impacts. Gaemi then moved northwards and curved towards Taiwan. Just before it arrived, it made a very discrepant counterclockwise loop whilst only 4 kilometers away from land, prolonging the landfall event by several hours.
Gaemi was still a Category 3 when it finally did make landfall in Taiwan, and from then on rapidly weakened as it arrived in eastern China, although it was much larger and significant impacts also occurred here. 2000mm of rain fell over the mountains of Taiwan, and over 60 have been killed across the whole path of the storm.
