Ok, a couple of things: 1. You're a great astrophotographer and your images and astrovlogs always inspire me. 2. There are are really only a handful of good astrophotography youtubers; you and Trevor are two of them. 3. What really impressed me is your humility by saying you're not in a position to give editing tutorials and shouting out Trevor. Respect. 4. This gets thrown around a lot on youtube, but I want you to know I really mean it: THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge! I can't wait for the skies to clear for me to get my ass into gear! :) All the best from Slovenia!

Alyn, I also get a similar 50/50 keeper rate with my setup (300mm F4 with 1.4x extender) at 1 minute exposures with some trailing and "double stars". Glad to know I'm not the only one with these problems. :) There tutorials online on disassembly and cleaning of internals/tightening screws to improve gear slippage, but none of these helped me. Thank you and keep up the good work, this channeling is fantastic!

Huge thanks for this and your other videos. Astrophotography is a subject I've always been greatly interested in but never taken the plunge, until now. I do have a Canon 7D with a couple of telescopic lenses covering short and long zooms. I've also purchased your Lightroom presets - nice work. I'm looking at that Skywalker tracker (can't find the damn thing to buy though...all appear sold out). Hopefully this will allow me to get started with some reasonable photos.

As always well produced and informative (and personable!). Interesting to hear about the lens hood and lens warmer preventing frost and dew - I have made up a super-long black lens hood (four times the length of the Canon one) which slides over the proprietary hood to provide a lot of extra shielding. Of course this is only good for long focal lengths - anything wide shows the hood at the sides. It works well though - leaving the camera out to take frames all night down to -10C sees no frost on the unwarmed lens.

can I just say that I appreciate you saying that you didn't feel that you were in a position to teach something because you didn't have enough experience yet, most people on youtube are jumping to create "master tutorials" on something they have only tried twice and end up giving really bad advice. It will be interesting to see how you get on with auto guiding the star adventurer, I have recently set my rig up with an ST4 cable from guide port to a pulse control module with USB cable to my Lenovo SSD laptop using PHD and appropriate Ascom software. The thing to remember is to turn off the Dec and use just the RA pulse in PHD. There are not many people doing this on line as yet, Not sure if Trevor Jones has. Anyhow Good luck,look forward to see the results..

Thanks for another great video, Alyn. I hope you'll be able to demonstrate the new ASI Air Pro that's coming soon. Do you think the periodic error you describe increases with the weight of the camera/lens?
@joeshmoe7967
@joeshmoe7967 4 года назад
Weight of the rig is a factor. Ensuring proper balance is crucial. The Star Adventurer is rated for 11lb. For heavier set ups the 'pro pack' counter weight kit or equivalent is absolutely a requirement. I shoot a Max of 20 subs, but usually 10-15 subs then double check things. You can waste a ton of time if things go wrong and you don't catch it until you get to processing.
@Rwm18
@Rwm18 4 года назад
The image turned out fantastic. Sorry cant help but ask.. Was the lens hood a trade off for the light pollution filter so the lens didnt fog up? If not what was the reason for not using it?

Glad I'm not the only one to get the camera lens misted up. I've lost a couple of long sessions that way and it's no fun when you've been in the cold for a couple of hours. Those lens heaters are ace. Stay off grass wherever possible and absolutely avoid being downwind of trees. They kick out a ton of moisture.

I have kind of this setup A7R3 and the 100-400 and a mount. Been thinking about picking up an extender not only for astro but also for wildlife. Would it be beneficial to get either the 1.4x or 2.0x for astro or is the loss of light from a higher f-stop not worth the extra reach?

Wow this shot of the Andromeda galaxy looks great! I do have the same lens, ie the Sony 100-400 GM, my camera is the Sony A7R III. So no reason to (immediately) buy a telescope imho. Anyway, this encourages me to start trying this field of photography. Just a question.. what are the settings used? 120 seconds is the exposure time but what the about the focal length, aperture and iso? TIA
@davidmartin8724
@davidmartin8724 4 года назад
Alyn, I am still learning the Star Adventurer (as well as this part of astrophotography in general) and last night was one of the first good nights I've had even with clouds (getting 2.5 - 3 minute exposures w the 24mm on Orion w gorgeous reds popping out) - but I had issues two nights ago with it when I thought I was aligned and then had other issues (with a suspected lens decentered) the previous weeks and I was paranoid that I had a tilted sensor after my camera was modded - so I think some of it maybe what you say and some of it is still me learning/user error. Appreciate your videos!
@RhawiDantas
@RhawiDantas 4 года назад
Nice shot man, just lovely. Btw do you think in using the two times tele converter?
@joeshmoe7967
@joeshmoe7967 4 года назад
For Andromeda the 400mm is pretty good. It is a relatively large object. Teleconverters also multiply the effective fstop. For this image, he would have need twice as many frames to get the same final image. I do shoot some objects with a 1.4 teleconverter. Makes my 300mm f4 into a 420 f5.6. Under darker skies In would consider a 2x. Most astro refractors are around f7 or so so f8 not too bad. The Sony has good noise performance at higher ISO so one could bump up to make up for a slower fstop

Hey Alyn I've just started with deepsky photography and yesterday I tried to photograph the andromeda galaxy for the second time in darker area. I'm using the skywatcher staradventurer 2i. I've used the Sony 200600mm objectiv and 30sec exposures and all frames where sharp but andromeda moved slowly but constant out of my frame. What could be the reason for this problem. Thanks for all answers🙌🏼
