My father brought me hunting for the first time when I was 10. We spent 2 weeks at my uncles camp and hunted in Sharon and Pomfret. I have not been back since 1980. However, those early years made me love hunting, fishing and the beautiful state of Vt. This video was awesome and made this old man smile. God Bless

Great video! It brought back so many memories of late fall, high hardwood hills with lots of deer tracks in the snow. I am from New Brunswick Canada. I am 64 and grew up on a farm. I hunted whitetail bucks on public land and around rural farm land for 40 years. First with the rifle and then the bow. Way back in the 1980's public land here was crawling with big bucks. I am talking a dozen buck scrapes in one line all over the place. At first I was just spooking a lot of deer by moving too fast. I tried a bit of tracking, but never liked it that much. I always preferred open hardwood because of the better visibility. But those cornflake leaves are a tricky stalk. I read an article in outdoor life from a guy who would still hunt the woods by timing himself. So I began doing it. I would time myself for 5 minute intervals. I would look ahead and examine my route, then move 50 feet very quickly. Then stand another 5 minutes. Before each move you scan the woods ahead, and move quickly. Its like stand hunting, but moving your stand as you go. I took a lot of nice bucks through those years by hunting this way. I used a Remington 700 7mm mag. And would stand behind a tree to stay hidden, and to have something to rest my rifle against at the shot. Always behind the shoulder or neck shots. I killed many bucks on hardwood ridges in dry crunchy leaves, or hard packed snow that never knew I was there. That is how a deer moves though the woods. stopping and listening and looking. Tracking works as well of course. Just too much risk of spooking a buck for me, and more chance of them running. I don't hunt anymore. No big deer left here on crown land at all. Hardly any does either. All of the deer are now in rural and subdivisions. And not many big bucks at all. I just film moose and wildlife now. Had a great run though. Took around 15 nice bucks with the rifle, and a dozen or so with the bow (from stand). Try my method of still hunting and you will see how well it works. One morning I stalked a buck in late November deer season. My friend had been hunting nearby. He said I can't believe you just walked up on that buck! So ..in the afternoon I hunted with him and showed him my method. We didn't find a deer...but instead walked right up on large black bear digging beech nuts in the snow. He had no idea we were there. He was still there digging, as we timed our way by him. It works very well! Sure do miss them good ole days! NBMooselover

I've hunted the U.P. my whole life, I have tried tracking a few times and always run into a bait pile 🙄. Otherwise just sit on the same few stumps we call deer stands and make a few new spots every year, no blinds or bait piles. I hope to start having some luck tracking, the U.P. is tough!

We are the most overlooked region, we have the highest pressure and lowest deer Density, we earn each buck. If you can kill a 1 1/2 every year in VT that's an accomplishment. Taking mature bucks consistently in the northeast especially VT which is the worst for trophy bucks.

Great video and what a buck! Congrats!! I moved to the Southeast about 10 years ago.. We don't get a ton of snow, but when we do I grab my 30-30 or .35 Remington and go walking. I've ran into so many who think that are great deer hunters.... I tell them about the speci,al breed of deer hunters in the mountains of New Yorkastan, Vermont, NH and Maine who can look at a track and not only tell you it's a buck, but damn near what it weighs... A LOT scoff, but some know... A few have checked out videos like this one.... Then they get it.

Loved your video. It brought back many memories. I was raised in upstate New York. I spent many hours hunting and tracking deer. I am 73 now and those days are long gone. The irony is I have lived in Montana for the last 30 years. As I have gotten older my success rate and deer size have gone up. Slowing down does have its advantages.

Forests, mountains, a predictable amount of tracking snow and square miles to roam during the firearms season. You buck trackers across VT, NH, ME and the NY Adirondacks are indeed fortunate. No wonder the best Whitetail hunters come from this region. Most can only dream of this kind of hunt.

I hunted Vermont for my first time this year. I absolutely loved it!!! I passed a very unique deer the first day. It had 4 points on one side and a twelve inch straight up spike on the other side. Pretty big bodied deer 185 lb or so. I was tagged out in Maine and NH so passing him was made a little easier. I absolutely loved the woods there, it was not clear cut, but totally uncut pristine forests. Coming from Maine it was a pleasure to walk through your beautiful woods. I will definitely be back this fall. I love you guys podcasts. Keep up the great work!!!

@stagrgear
@stagrgear 10 месяцев назад
Hey There, The checkered jackets are wool. It is part of the heritage that northeast hunting and tracking carries and the wool has a lot of great perks and features that you can't get in a lot of modern synthetic materials like the quietness, natural odor resistance, natural water repellency, warmth even when wet, and few other things!

Fun stuff. Good buck. Great job working to get him. You guys need to learn what a "giant", "monster", "huge" buck is lol. As someone who grew up chasing bucks in NH and Maine I get it. But once you start spreading out to hunt the country you learn what true giant, huge, etc bucks are. And I'll add this, its damn hard hunting New England big woods. The deer numbers aren't high and the soils aren't great in most areas to grow real giant bucks. But still, your run of the mill 3 yr old isn't a giant or huge buck. Congrats on a good buck and the work ethic to get it done! Nice shot too!
@Hunterdandoe207
@Hunterdandoe207 Год назад
It’s all relative to the area you hunt. For VT that is a giant buck.
@stagrgear
@stagrgear 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching, he ended up being a mature 9.5 year old buck. No doubt about it there’s more true “giants” out in the Midwest where you’re chasing bucks but considering the landscape, population, available feed, and habitat that’s an exceptional buck for the Green Mountains. Appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and best of luck this coming season! 🦌
