Tracksaw PictureFrame [video 514]

In this one I make a #picture #frame using just a #tracksaw. Why? Because I was asked to! Thanks Dafydd @thedeafmaker for asking the question over on 10MW Plus!
.
Follow Dafydd here - / thedeafmaker
.
Now, to be absolutely clear, I do not recommend this as a method for aspiring picture frame makers to go into production - there’s a reason why commercial framers use cast iron Morso guillotines - but, if you need a quick frame making - or perhaps a last-minute gift - and all you have available is a tracksaw, then yes, it’s absolutely doable. Enjoy!
This is my last scheduled public RU-vid video for 2022, thank you so much for watching. I'll be back in 2023, but not until February; I’ve been posted regular videos for six years now, pretty much without missing a beat, and I think it’s time to take a breather. I’ll still be posting regularly to the members at 10MinuteWorkshop Plus and the public RU-vid videos will resume in February, but for January I’ll be taking a break and catching up with family, where I can.
My very best wishes for the festivities, and I'll see you next year.
Peter

It amazes me what you can do with a track saw. I own a table saw and when I do a tricky cut like a rebate, I always say you can't do that with a track saw and yet you prove me wrong every time. Even your jigs are so useful and so simple. You are the track saw king!
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
Thank you! There are a few cuts where a tale saw is easier, and one or two that just aren’t possible with a tracksaw because of the direction they tilt, but generally speaking they’re a very versatile tool. 👍

You did a great job with this. I found your channel a while ago just as I was starting to think about making some picture frames. I came close to buying a track saw but went with a table saw since it seemed better suited to ripping long narrow widths and also because with the supplied fence, jigs not were required. I tried cutting the rabbets with the saw but found that the router table worked better for me. There's no doubt that the miters are much more accurate with the jig you created and it allows you to do everything with a single saw whilst I have to break out the miter saw to cut the corners. My "shop" is basically my back deck so all these tools are a pain to manage which may, in a few months, lead me back to the track saw now that your video has demonstrated how easy it is to use for frame making.

Not sure splines would add much strength tbh; you’d probably be better of popping a biscuit or a couple of dowels in there, or small dominos. 👍

Bit of a silly question Peter, but where do you take the cover photos for your videos? It doesn't immediately look like you take them in the workshop (surely not enough space for the lighting, backdrops etc alongside the benches, tools, vacuum hoses etc). Fancy doing a BTS video for us and sharing your photographic tips too?
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
They're shot in the workshop; I've done a few little clips and snippets for the channel members over the years, but it's not something that would play well with the rest of the channel content. There's a backdrop that pulls down over the 'saw wall' and the existing lights are all daylight balance LEDs, so they're pretty easy to shoot, usually a still pulled from a 4k video clip. 👍

All the Best to You and Family this Holiday! I love watching your videos. You work the track saw wonderfully. I knew a worker who was quite adept with a big plunge router. Hi Peter and Happy New Year. That was interesting, I had saved it for watching later as I do want to make some picture frames. Before viewing I was rather expecting you to use the MFT holes, bench dogs and a reference stop (or two). Do I now need to find your video on making the mitre box?
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
Thanks Norman! The problem with using the MFT is that a) not everyone has one, and b) for mitres especially, the rail has to be fully supported, which is harder to do on the MFT. The mitre box link is in the description, but it was the video from a week before this one! 👍

A cross cut blade to make super clean cuts or a rip blade to make faster cuts and reduce dust? I'm really worried a cross cut blade will burry my shop in MDF dust. Hi Peter - some advice if you can please. I have a Makita and trying to make repeated accurate cuts on the “wrong side” using the method (edge guide) you are using at around 07:40 in your video. Find that at times the cut-off piece goes flying out the back usually damaged. I am using a fence and a sacrificial 6mm MDF under the work piece. It reminds me of the warning not to use the fence as an edge guide when using the Mitre on a table saw. (Kick back) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If it’s the waste-side piece that you want to keep then you need a sacrificial strip taped or clamped to the benchtop to stop the waste-side piece moving; doesn’t have to be big, just enough to stop,it shooting away. 👍 HTH P

Can you get those dog clips for Evolution tracks? On another not, having recently built a full MFT, I’ve found having some lengths of 20mm dowel very handy. I use it to make jigs or long stops on the bench, really handy.

No, the Evo rails don’t have the upward-facing t-slot , so you can’t attach them. And I use a length of 20mm conduit - works a treat and is a couple of quid a length. 👍

Good morning Peter You cant sneek a new Mirka sander into a video without an explanation however brief. Didnt you know that that was against the rules? Happy Xmas from sunny South Africa.

Thank you! And best wishes from London! Don’t think this counts as sneaking though! 🤔👍Money, Mouth, Mirka [video 507] ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5XDUWQ_Jodo.html

Another excellent video, thank you Peter. Do you use the dovetail clamping on your workbench often? I remember watching the original video where you introduced it and then incorporated it into your mft top, but haven't really seen it being used since? On this video, I note you used the dovetail clamps as "regular" mft/track clamps through the dog holes. Thanks again.

@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
Thanks! The microjig dovetail clamps get used now and then - they’re used in the slots as well in this vid - but I don’t find them especially convenient to use, and when I change the MFT top I’ll probably try regular t-slots instead. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop thanks for the quick reply Peter. Yes, I missed them in the video, my mistake! I've recently gotten a t track router cutter so plan on putting a grid into an Mft top when I get around to making it! Thanks

Great presentation, however it would have been faster and easier if you made the rebate operation at the start with the long piece rather than repeating it 4 times ..👍❤.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop Год назад
No, you have much more control over a smaller workpiece if you do the rebates this way. But feel free to try it your way, if you think it’s better. 🤷‍♂️

That would be better if you used router with rabbeting bit. With track saw alinging across very long distance is not going to be accurate.

I'm almost certain I remember my wife expressing an interest in taking up picture framing as time filler in her impending retirement. So Santa is bringing her enough gear to start her off...I know, I know, it is a high risk strategy, but I've had it with the barely concealed, perfume again, eye rolls. Wish me luck.
