Traction Alopecia : What is it? 

Omg. I've had the same "complaint". I'm not a hair stylist but I do braid/conrows for a fair amount of my friends & family. Yes I'm light handed, I'm trying to save your hair/scalp. Beauty doesn't need to be pain.

I wish this type of info was available to me 10-15 years ago 😥. I wore my hair in a ponytail for years and now my edges are paying for it. Good video👏👏👏👏

I LOVE that you pointed out that some people think that they need to “ feel” someone in their hair. Umm not me. I would always point out when getting braids that they were too tight and either my mom or stylist would say “ oh you are just “tender headed”. If I braid to loose it will come out.” What came out was my hair and edges 😳. Very informative video.

This is valuable info. A hairdresser used to weave my hair. I kept telling her that she was platting it too tight and then pulling the thread even tighter. I noticed my hair thinning and it was horrible. I then asked her how come I was losing hair. Her response was old age. I was so horrified because I know i'm not much older than her. It's a long story why it took me so long to leave .But i left and got info from youtube. My natural hair got back longer and thicker but some of my edges are still damaged. I do wear natural twists and people call me "empress" because it looks nice. The point is that I will never weave my hair ever again. I wear wigs a lot but also use my natural hair. In this way I can moisturize and massage my scalp and sleep with my satin cap. I do not like the idea of sleeping with a wig on. The "got to be glue" people are using is not for me. Long ago people did not use glue.

Hi Linwood, This information also applies to locs; where the re-twist or interlock method is done way too tight, then on top of that it gets styled in a tight up-do, which eventually will pull out the hair follicle. I did ask the hairstylist to interlock not so tightly, but this did not work, so I ended up not going to the salon anymore, and I have maintained my interlocking myself.

Thanks Linwood so much for sharing!!😊 I wished I would have known this information sooner. I always loved a sleek ponytail for my daughters and that didn't mix well with thick hair!! Lesson learned the hard way!!!😥 Also I had to get my hair cut (thigh length) because the weight of it was hurting my neck and causing tension with my hairline, not to mention, I also kept it in a bun most of the time. Now I wear my hair out and my neck feels better. It's growing back but it's not as long as it was before. I am looking forward to hearing more in this series. Once again thank you!!❤

So happy you spoke about this issue. Because people keep saying "your edges are gone" but they continue to do hairstyles to their hair that causes their edges continue breaking off more.

I have traction alopecia my hair is growing back slowly...but, I'm grateful that its growing back 🤗 I just wish I had a faster way to grow it out.

Thank you for this video. I only just discovered the reason for my mild balding. This is why. people kept telling me it's deficiencies, or genetics, or male pattern balding. But I knew those were not the case (I know my nutrition better than anyone else, track it daily for years on cronometer). I have grown my hair till my hips as a man (donor), and only during this time my hair has been under a lot of stress, inevitable pulling when asleep, or brushing knots, and as a motorcyclist my helmet tugs on my hairline too. All these combined has caused significant balding around my hairline in just 2 years. Don't take this lightly y'all. No men in my family are bald, even my dad at 70 has a crisp hairline. This is self inflicted. P.s a pharmacist told me he regrew his using a derma roller. Doesn't work on follicles that have died, but in areas where there thinning, the micro-needles will cause surface level punctures that encourage blood flow to the cite and healing in the area, offering the follicles more blood supply. Much love.

Early squad! This is the category I fall in. Always had to have the tight styles from a teen straight into adulthood. Eventually the thinning started to wreak havoc & so I quit the relaxer & went natural. 2yrs later though the rest of my hair is flourishing, the areas behind my ears down to my nape are hardest hit & not filling in😭

I have no idea how tf to even wear my hair anymore. I have 2 textures in my hair rn (growing out old perm) so wearing it down while it’s natural looks awkward. It’s already pretty short, just barely past my shoulders. I REALLY don’t want to big chop/shave it off😭slick ponytails/buns are the only styles that look cute on me rn, braids expose the traction alopecia on my hairline. Yes I have no hair line due to 2016 up until the lock down I have had my hair in braids. My hair line is thin to nothing and the middle is very thin. I am now considering getting micro locks.

Yep! It happened to me! I got cornrows in 2012 with a middle part into a pony tail and the lady pulled my hair so tight I now have a permanent middle part. Like you could have parked a yacht in there. It is better now but still a mess. My poor middle part and edges ..... RIP..... Literally!

I love this video... so there is nothing that would bring the hair back once its considered alopecia?

The “blood supply” are actually little bulbs of keratin (protein) that supply’s the hair with nutrients! The follicle has not been pulled out Hairs that shed will also have the bulb, smaller ones being the hairs closer to the end of their life cycle (before it grows another or doesn’t grow due to aging or other factors) But in terms of the follicle u cannot see it getting pulled out. If it gets damaged or doesn’t have enough blood supply it could close temporarily or permanently and slowly become vellus hairs (the tiny thin translucent hairs u see over your body and hairline) and maybe even become scarred over to where there is no hair at all in that area. So do not worry! Shedding or thinning can be fixed with proper diet and sleep and health. Obviously traction alopecia is a bit of a different case with that being mechanical damage, but damaged follicles (from the pulling) could take 2-4 years to recover so if you do not see new hair growth for a while, do not panic. Healthy follicles will start regrowing hair after shedding a few months after. But damaged or pulled out hairs are different. Nonetheless they should produce new hair if not scarred or badly injured. The human body is strong guys, take care of it, don’t be too stressed because that affects hair health a lot, and try to stay positive. Ponytails itself are not extremely damaging, it is only if it is too tight, or you wear that style too often for a long period of time THERE IS HOPE YALL BEST OF LUCK.

Is there no solution? I've been using temple balm and consistently wrapping my edges up and I've been seeing really good growth/retention but only for the hair That's already there (if that makes sense) it still not as dense as i would like. I can send you pictures of it. I was relaxed as a child on top off constant crochet braids and pulled styles. When i got on my own i went natural

I see so many of my coworkers that wear weaves, wigs and braids that have traction alopecia. The thing I find really sad is that some of these women are in fact natural, but you would never know that since you never see them without the weave. I can understand wanting to change it up, but I believe you should wear your natural hair and give it a break from all the extensions while you still have hair on your head.

I suffer from traction alopecia and it hit my self confidence, self esteem, and feeling hopeless. I’ve cut my hair completely off in 2015 it grow back so healthy and it starting falling back out 2017. I’ve been sick taking a lot of steroids for a course of years. Then January 2022 I caught Covid and was put on a lot of steroids due to me having other underlining health issue. That’s when I notice an increase of my hair falling out or my hair would dread up if I didn’t put in a ponytail. Plus getting steroids injections for both my hips. Last month I gotten really sick I thought I was going to die. I was transported to the hospital on C-Pap and they started loading more steroids into me. I remember I couldn’t breath I have a bunch of doctors and nurses around me screaming all these medical terminology and they had to put me on their C-Pap machine. I had my hair in a hair wrap and the nurse begin to take my wrap off and in between me trying to breath. I said please don’t take my hair wrap of due to me being embarrassed about the lack of hair I have on my head. I felt so vulnerable and embarrassed. The nurse was like. Ms.____ we’re trying to save your life. She notice the look on my face and she closed the curtain so nobody could see me. I’ve made a decision to cut what’s left of my hair. I don’t know should I go to the barbershop or the beauty shop. So keep me lifted in prayer as I take this new journey on embracing my bald head💪🏾👑✊🏾💇🏾‍♀️

I had a nice set of hair before I started doing my hair in tight braiding hair styles regularly. Now I have traction alopecia :( I began to notice it right away but I became so insecure with how I looked that I kept getting the braids. It was like a cycle that I couldn't break.

I remember the days when I had to take Tylenol after having braids done. I mean the pain would last a few days. How crazy was that!

What hairstyles can you do with traction alopecia. I have very short natural hair and im just at a lost as to what to do with my hair as far as styling it. After having so many of the wrong people in my hair, im so afraid now, all I do is just wash it, moisturize it and pat it down. Wanted something nice for the hoildays/ my birthday.
