That was very interesting. I’ve been natural for about 7 years and my hair is still short. I am not losing hair in the crown but my hair is shorter and more coarse there. It seems to grow much slower there and in the past it would feel sore and itch there more than other spot on my head. It is better now. I try not to do too many updo styles (ponytail and kanekalon) or too much heat application but it still doesn’t grow as fast. My hair in general seems to grow very slowly. I’m expecting and hoping for progress but with that comes the need for convenient styling. Sooo...a lot of the time that includes braids and updos. My twist outs have become trash so don’t do those often. My go to is my wash n go with eco styler gel. Any general advice??
Come October, I’ll be 2yrs natural and I haven’t used any form of heat. My top crown area is in pain as I type 😭. Before going natural, I noticed the same pain and bad breakage. The breakage has lessened, but the pain is still painful 😩. I notice this every once in awhile, when I style my hair. Not sure if I have CCCA, but I searched my symptoms and came across this. Also, the sore spot area, the hair is a more coarse texture.

You also forgot to mention it's HEREDITARY. MY grandmother, and mother had it. I've never permed or used a hot combed my hair. I noticed it at 13 years old. When I hit puberty. I'm now in my 40's And the spot that started the size of my finger is now the size of my hand. The only thing that has helped is taking things to decrease DHT. CURRENTLY there is no cause for CCCA according to modern medicine. As my doctor said women of color have it in the middle of their head and white women tend to get alopecia from their hairline to center of their head.
Hello I'm 70 years old and have been diagnosed recently with lupus I have what is called discoid alopecia was yes. I’m a white woman with FFA. Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia. It’s rare and scars the roots. Lace front wigs are the best thing. I’ve learned so much from the black women on RU-vid. And I don’t have to pay $2000 for a wig!! Lots of white women are paying that. I came across your videos. Just wondering. Have you ever made a wig with glue?
I suffer from CCCA, was diagnosed back in 2013/14 after being natural for 3 to 4 years. Now a year before being diagnosed, I went to a different Derm. who suggested I keep my hair well moisturized , which I thght I was. It may have been from years of abuse of relaxers since a child, but I do feel it's hereditary as well. My aunt on my dad side today me years before any thinning that baldness runs in the family in the women. I've learned now 8 yrs later that I need to change my diet, and try to avoid inflammatory foods and take things to help keep it at bay
I know your probably going to find issue with this but as a natural I tried the co wash the deep conditioner the braiding up the crown area to protect it always. Until one day I sat with pure aloe for over an hour. My broken dry crown is now almost as long as my past shoulder length hair and it’s still a bit dry but doesn’t burn or it’s like it used to. My perms always started at the crown...if we only knew what we know now. Thanks for all your great vids!❤️
Linwood, I'm so glad to have discovered your RU-vid video. My grandfather was also named Linwood, by the way (small world). I've been to a dermatologist who diagnosed me with CCCA and indicated those patches of hair on the crown of my scalp and behind it will never grow back. I'm transitioning from straightening my hair with a heat brush to an all natural curl style, so I hope this will help. I don't want to face being partially bald for the rest of my life! You are so knowledgeable. Thank you for the information. Yes the burning from the relaxer. When I was probably 13 my Auntie in Alabama gave me a perm. It must have been extra super strength. 2 minutes on my head it was burning like crazy and when she was washing the relaxer out she was scrubbing my head with her nails. Hunnneyyy..My scalp and above my ear were burned l ended up with scabs in my head.
I loved your tutorials. I wish we had a hair stylist like you in Tampa that knows how to care for hair the right way. I’ve been natural for five years and I’m very afraid to step into another salon because most salons get you in and out, treating everyone’s hair the same. Thanks for your video. I was diagnosed with ccca. I don’t wear wigs/weaves/etc. my hair is natural and I was told this condition is due to inflammation in the body which causes an autoimmune response. I still have hair - I control ccca by cutting out red meat and lowering sugar intake. I also take vitamin d and zinc regularly.

You NEED to educate some of these stylist out here that is slapping perm on people's head/hair w/o proper education of the product and more importantly, the negative effects of the products. I have a stylist who REFUSES to base my scalp! Keep up the good work!
It's time to look for another stylist ones who knows about hair care and listen to the clients. I have CCCA and trying to grow my hair back in the crown. Big chop May 21, 2018. My stylist rarely condition my hair after shampoo. I always base my hair or make sure my scalp was moisturized before a touch up. Didn't know that when my stylist spray my hair with oil sheen it only seal the hair but not moisturize. Didn't know the type of products to use on scalp and hair and understanding hair porosity. I am paying the price now. The rest of my hair is growing faster in it's natural state than the relaxer.
Hi Pamela, so sorry to hear about your CCCA. It's amazing to know what some of these called professionals are doing to damage our hair and our scalps! Linwood and other knowledgeable professionals are here to help us (thank God!). When you really think about it, it all makes perfect sense. I wish I knew what I know now YEARS ago! Not things like if your scalp is burning - WASH IT OUT! that is common sense, but more along the line of protein/moisture balance, lye vs no-lye, moisturizing and sealings, using clarifying shampoo, what oils are best for hair growth and overall health of your hair and just as importantly caring for your SCALP!!! I'm lucky to have any damn hair left! Check out 'Alopecia Jass' on RU-vid...her story and journey if remarkable! You sound like you went natural after your big chop in May...and she is also a natural who had alopecia and helped to cure it with natural oils and remedy. The hair struggle is REAL, but with patience and knowledge and the proper products, we can all heal together.

When I went natural with the big chopped in May 2018, I have visit the hair salon to show the progress of my growing hair 3 months later. One beautician asked what products was I was using and they was amazed how my hair was growing. I went on explaining in how I had to learn my hair porosity, deep conditioning, pre-poo and another beautician than mentioned yeah, a lot of people do not know about hair porosity. As I was explaining about how after I deep condition my hair, my curls be popping and the 3rd beautician mentioned deep conditioning does that. I think my hair was over-processed when getting a touch up. I was wondering why the back of my head I had new growth,(broken hair) but the front of my head my hair was still straight and had very little new growth. Each time after service one side of my permed hair was shorter than the other side and It was a bob haircut asymmetrical. It was getting shorter and shorter each time I go there. Now we know how to properly take care of our hair with GlamFam, you and others.

Relaxers now libked to cancer/ fibroids . CCCA means no more chemicals or glue on scalp. In addition to high glucose/ A1C. Sugar/ high starch diets increase inflammation which we are often prone too.
Man Linwood...I've never met a stylist that is as educated, and carefully attentive as you. I can see you REALLY care about your clients and their welfare, and not just the money they pay. All stylists, young and old, need to take a class given by you, because everyone I've had did these things that you say is a no no! Grrrrr…….

I have lace wigs and never needed an adhesive but I just invested in human hair wig cut the lace but it does not look seamless and the lace is lifting which is why I need assistance in what is good without messing up my skin or edges. Thank you for this video. I'm looking for scalp care videos and came across this one. I have been diagnosed with evolving CCCA, meaning I caught it early and some scarring is present at the site of my biopsy. You're so right, there is honestly NO definitive cause of this type of alopecia. I will say that reducing trauma to the scalp has to be priority number one though. CCCA is a lymphocytic alopecia, white blood cells are found around the follicles. The body's immune system is triggered, inflammatory response occurs, and eventually follicles are lost. Women who wear their hair natural or relaxed can experience it.
I was recently diagnosed too. I dont have relaxed hair, have never worn tight weaves and havent worn braids in forever-----i was still afflicted with it. There was a journal article recently published that suggests that there is a PADI3 gene mutation that causes CCCA.
@@grierrichards2463 My Dermatologist has me using Ketoconazole shampoo. The Pharmacist told Nizoral is the same thing, no prescription needed. That addresses the itching, but CCCA causes severe inflammation. I'm not sure if you e been diagnosed as well, but if you're experiencing symptoms please get a biopsy performed by a Dermatologist.
@@Nic2Blk has your physician prescribed a steroidal solution for you to apply to the scalp? My doctor prescribed betamethasone. I apply it twice daily to the affected area for 2 weeks, then I give it a 1 week break. I repeat this every month.
A lot of ppl don’t let their hair rest from certain styles. I always have my hair braided but I always give it a rest for a few days and I massage my scalp and grease it. As I got older it’s hard to grow out the crown of my hair vs how my mom has did it but we gotta educate ourselves and stop trying to not have “nappy” hair.

I have CCCA but I don’t have and baldness or bald patches but my hair is kinda thin. It really bothers me because I’m only 25 years old. I feel unattractive because I’m always hiding under wigs. I would rather not have to use any of that. I’m natural. I have been for 2 years now. I use to scratch the heck out of my scalp like I had flees or something. Not realizing that there was an internal issue. Due to the excessive scratching, I had experienced a large amount of breaking in the center of my hair because that’s where it itched the most. So that’s where I scratched the most. The hair in that area grew back. But overall, my hair is still pretty thin. Most people think I have pretty thick or normal hair density with my hair in its natural state. But when it’s straightened, that’s when you notice that o have really thin hair.
Wow we all need a stylist like you. Thank you. My crown area is inflamed sensitive and breaks as so dry. I wore braids or a crochet styles and it grew back. I’ve had it out natural most of this year and it’s broken off again. I’m confused 🤷🏾♀️

I Googled actual scientific studies on ccca. A recent study found that the scalps of ccca sufferers are probiotic-depleted. This is a unique feature of ccca found in no other type of alopecia which needs to be treated specifically. So I mecroneedled my bald spot with a 0.75 needle and applied yogurt mixed with amla, bhringraj, coffee, and some oils to my whole scalp. I massaged the bald spot for 5 mins and let the hair mask sit under a plastic cap for an additional 45 mins before I washed it out. I did this a few times and my hair regrowth was remarkable in a short time period. I tried all manner of other diy remedies and nothing worked without the yogurt. Nothing. However the hair will fall right back out as soon as you stop using the yogurt treatment. I have an idea to facilitate permanent hair regrowth in ccca cases but I won't post it because I could market it someday.
I think mine came from relaxers.... i started getting them around 13 or 14 and the hair in my middle and crown area broke out and never grew past about 3 inches.... im 34 now, I stopped relaxing around 2004 or 2005 .... black women STOP relaxing altogether, even when done properly, its just not healthy
Excellent info. So nothing can really be done naturally about it right? I've had a biopsy done and they want to do a series of multiple injections along with medications but I'm not that desperate after looking at reviews of people who have done it. I don't care for pain. And it can return they told me (breakage and bald spots) . I stopped the braiding and perms and have seen a little growth in the crown. But my mom and grandmother had similar symptoms... But sitting under a hot hooded hair dryer info makes sense (I don't use that either anymore). Good info (scratching the scalp, etc.)

This was great, thank you. I was just diagnosed with CCCA and hereditary thinning. I did tend to rub/ scratch my scalp and finger detangle my coils a lot, and have done a fair amt of braids, Dominican wash and sets and silk presses. The center of my scalp is always sore and sensitive. Caught the CCCA early, so it is pre-scarring and pre hair loss and in the first week of treatments to treat inflammation. Do you have any suggestions for hair maintenance moving forward? I currently have shoulder length 4a hair, getting a tapered cut this weekend. Planning on keeping short for several years at least, but unsure if I can ever grow my hair long again due to this? Does this means no more twist outs/ silk presses/ braids ever? Are some of these styles more ok thanothers? Is there a frequency that is safe? Thank God for RU-vid and stylists like you!

CORRECTION:CCCA IS GENETIC! If any autoimmune issues run through your family, yes you can get it. I My scalp’s inflammation stemmed from white blood cells attacking my hair follicles. Please do not misinform your viewers. Natural hair or not- CCCA is most prevalent in African American women . I been natural for nearly 15 years and contracted this because I have a genetic history of lupus and other autoimmune issues. Do not misinform your viewers. Traction alopecia is what’s attributed most to weaves and tight hairstyles- not CCCA although both do in once scarring .
Thank you for saying this - my dermatologist said the same. They are not sure what causes it, but I’m during treatment they suggest that you do not manipulate the hair harshly or use styles that may add too much tension to the scalp. However, The start of the hair loss is an inflammatory response from your body that causes it to attack your follicles and cause the scarring that prevents the hair from growing back. There is a genetic component, they also believe it’s somehow linked to fibroids and maybe relaxer use during youth. Nothing definitive yet.
Do you have a video on telegen affluvium? I was diagnosed with that a year ago. Lose all my hair but it grew back. It was depressing. But I feel like the condition is coming back!!!!!
If you're affected in a bad way by soy and love to chew gum. Dentine White is just about the only chewing gum that doesn't contain soy in the ingredients.
I believe I have it. My hair is fine now but has hard time growing the crown area past an inch. I can't wear braids in the area because it irritates me and makes me scratch. Mine I think is stress related as I pat and scratch my head a lot up there area. It grows alot when I massage instead or use denman to lightly brush the area
Glycerin works well to keep natural hair moist. Apply it to your hair after towel drying then twist your hair as protection. Also mix organic aloe with pumpkin seed oil and apply to hair and scalp, put on a plastic cap and let it set for 20 mins before shampooing your hair.
Good info, so now I have high porosity, dry brittle hair and possible CCCA crown area so what type products do I use.will it be sulfate free? I use an organic topical booster with DHT.I thought this would help. What do you think?
I've read that DHT can actually attack the hair follicle. I had a biopsy done about a month ago and I was diagnosed with CCCA. You have to stop the inflammation so that hair follicle isn't destroyed. CCCA can NOT be diagnosed just by looking at the scalp, please please have them do a biopsy. Good luck!
So I have just been diagnosed with CCCA and I have been wanting to get sisterlocks, would you suggest I wait, not get them at all or just deal with what I already have? I went to the dermatologist and she saw the CCCA in two places, on the crown and around the edges... I was only concerned with the edges because I can clearly see that but I didn’t see the crown area.. it’s not as noticeable as the edges but it’s there.. I really want locs.. opinion?
Hello glam fam I have a few questions ever since I was a little girl and natural the crown spot has bothered me and numerous of times I have rubbed it bald and even relaxed it bothers me and can ccca mess with nerves because unless I'm shampooing that is the only part of my scalp I can "feel"
It doesn’t typically deal with the nerves, but often that area can be prone to issues if you sweat in your head, causing the scalp to be dry in that area. The dryness leads to itching and scratching, which can cause breakage, damage to the scalp and follicles, and increased sensitivity in the area.
What's your opinion about crochet braids? I've been natural since 2011 and I started doing crochet braids as a protective style so I would keep my hands out of my hair. It has grown, but I wonder how often or not I should do this.
I've wondered this as well. My problem is you have to be SUPER careful with that latch hook because it can catch the hair and snag it, especially if you do them yourself and there are sections of your head that you can't see. And sometimes it still gets caught even if you're super careful. It kind of negates its benefits as a protective style if you're doing more damage than good just to get it in. 😞
I think this is what I have because my bald spot started in the middle and looks similar to the pic. Some of it is growing back but I have some shiny spot that have not grown in. I went to the dermatologist and she said the scalp is inflamed but was not that much of a help
