Here's a look at the different tractor tire tread patterns available for most tractors on the market including John Deere, Kubota, and many others. We'll review tractor tire tread patterns including the R1 Ag Tire, R3 Turf Tire, R4 Industrial Tire, and HDAP Tire! If you're not sure what type of tractor tire tread pattern is best for you or you're simply looking to gain a better understanding of the different tread patterns available, then hopefully this video overview will give you a decent starting point. It isn't all inclusive and is based on my experience using each of them.
The tractors shown in the video include a John Deere x738, John Deere 1025r, John Deere 3032e, and John Deere 3038e. However, this applies to virtually any model of tractor on the market. However, it is important to keep in mind that you may need to get a different size rim or wheel in order to fit different tires.

I have a John Deere 790 tractor which I got new and a 3032E which I purchased last year and they both have the R-4 tires on both of them. I love the all purpose tires and use my equipment around my place and treat the equipment with care.

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences about tractor tires. So far, I like R4's the best. Had em on my 1025r, and they worked great! Didnt tear up the lawn, plenty of traction. The tires on that x739 look like what I had on the x729, it was unstoppable in the winter with a 54" blower in the front. All your tractors look in tip top shape and nicely detailed! 👍👍

Thank you sir :) R4's have become so popular for good reason. Great all-around tire. HDAP's are as close to a perfect winter tire as I've found. Did you get your cold one yet?

One thing I often see overlooked is load rating. R1 and R3 generally don't have as much load capacity as R4. Back in the day it wasn't much of a problem because "ag tractors" either didn't have a FEL or had a low rated FEL. Since FEL ratings have been steadily climbing but tire loads have been relatively constant, some of these compact and subcompact tractors have FELs that can exceed the load rating of R1/R3 tires and you can end up blowing a tire or popping off the rim. I'm glad to see these hybrid offerings now that have better traction than R4 while coming in close to or in some cases even above the R4 load rating.

I worked at a Goodyear service center while I was going to college here in Western Pa and we had a large farm business. Tread styles were almost endless, next you chose a rubber compound.

I have HDAP on my X739 great traction. I only time I've slipped and torn up turf is a left turn with a big incline.

I got an old JD LT155 lawn tractor my dad gave me. Its like 20 yrs old but in great shape. I got a 42" plow for it and just put carlisle super lugs on the back. The original tires were still on it. I know they'll be good for snow plowing but I hope they don't ruin my yard for grass cutting.

Where I’m from that 1st “tractor” is a lan tractor. A garden tractor is one you make and work a garden with.

What’s your experience and thoughts on the R3 radial turf tires available on the 1 and 2 series? They cost a bit more then the R3 bias ply turf tires, but I heard they have a better ride and do well in snow. The radial tread pattern looks a bit more aggressive then the R3 bias ply turf tires, and I was concerned that they might tear up the lawn more?

Great question. I have yet to get my hands on a set of those, so I can't provide any first hand experience. I know there are some owners over on GreenTractorTalk that have them on the new style 2032r and 2038r and love them. Multiple users mow and use for snow removal. I haven't heard anything negative about them yet.

I have a set of R3 Radials on my 2018 2025r. They are filled with bio ballast and I usually have a backhoe attached so it runs heavy. They are excellent on the grass considering our yards in the pacific nw are usually always damp and grass is thin. They are gentle on my hard packed gravel driveway where the r4 really chew it up.

What brand are the R4 tires you show in this video - they have a differant pattern than my R4? Do you sell tires to ship?

I have a Kubota B2630 - Front tire is 23x8.5-14 R4 / Rear is a 12.4-16 R4 - can I put the a Versa turf or R14T tire on the rims I have to replace the R4s? Then, what sizeswwould I need as I cant seem to find the matching sizes in the versa turf or R14T and I know its important to keep the ratio the same for 4x4 set up.

Good comparisons... additionally, I believe the R1s come in a bit less expensive than the R4s.

comlbbeau I run the R1 tires as well. I've tried the R4 tires on my smaller tractor and they did okay until I tried going into my feedlot in winter. Lol The ag tires are hard to best for traction and value. That being said I use my tractor on a farm. I know alot of guys have compact tractors to pull a finishing mower or do hobbie farm stuff and I'm sure the R4 tires work good for that.

Thanks for the rundown, how well would turf tires hold out on a 4066r to do tilling in dirt but also for mowing lawns, any thoughts?

Turfs are great for mowing, but no traction in loose soil for tilling. However, that is a heavy tractor to begin with so you may be alright depending on conditions.

I got 1600 hrs out of my r1 front tires on my deere 5410 which dose a lot of loader work on gravel and grass

That is very impressive. I had a Kubota L4740 recently with 750 hours and the front Ag's were smooth as a bowling ball.

Hi Matt, it probably depends on what you're looking to do with it and your budget as well. However, many folks get by just fine with a 1025r. They mow well, have decent capacity with the loader, and you can run a 48" tiller or brush hog behind them. They also allow for a front mount snow blower or plow. Larger tractors will accomplish this as well and be better at the utility aspect such as with the loader and 3 point implements. The down side is cost and fewer mid mount mower options. Plus, the cost tends to increase with size.

Okay, if you're looking to get air, then you'll need an OEM cab. John Deere starts offering OEM cabs on the 3r Series and larger. Kubota offers them on the B Series and larger. For a nice, low hour machine with a loader and cab, look to spend no less than the low $20,000's. It just goes up from there.

Those AG tires work nice dry dirt an yard but they don’t work well little damp or wet barely at all if I didn’t put my wheel weights on had hard time pull my dump cart up my hill my yard I don’t like that I’m trying better more aggressive tire that digs in
