I grew up shooting traditional, but with no traditional archers or archers period in my family. So as a child I learned instinctively. Never even heard of these other techniques actually.

That's the first time I've heard someone describe instinctive shooting accurately. So many youtubers present instinctive shooting as something you just do and it will come to you after some time. But the honest deal is, sure you can get to the instinctive level of shooting and it'll take thousands and thousands of repetitions. Ain't no easy way to do it.
@@herrero4270 The opposite is true. You probably should not string walk with a wooden bow as it will put uneven stress on the limbs and the lower limb will likely take more of a set over time. With fiberglass I doubt it matters too much.
@@herrero4270 That's correct, wooden bows are very carefully tillered and never pulled past their intended draw weight. Doing so can permanently bend them and weaken them, or even break them. Fiberglass is much more resilient.
This is Fantastic..... I've been waiting for the Lancaster competition broadcasters, narrators , to explain these Archery terms for years...but they only provide , cookie crumb definitions....Matt has done a great job. 6:15....Ontario Canada hunting laws.....If we get caught hunting at night...we get fined for poaching. lol Poaching is hunting during a prohibited period or at night. You may only hunt from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset (exceptions: night raccoon hunting and spring hunting hours for wild turkey).
I have only been shooting a bow for a couple of years. During the lockdown many of us have been under I have been shooting almost every day for 5 weeks in my back garden. I shoot at 10, 15 and 20 yard, usually between 30 and 100 arrows per day. I am using a 40# Bear Montana longbow and I never even thought about aiming. I can only say that I shoot an arrow at a target like I would throw a stone. I use the equipment how it feels right and in a way the arrow flies true and I "throw" that arrow at the target. I have a moveable backstop and I shoot at 300ml plastic bottles on a string hanging against the backstop. On my good days I can hit the bottle 2 out of 3 shots, many times over but I almost always have a flier which ruins my group. I believe I need to work on some better form to hit the target 3/3 times every time. I love this sport and I love listening to people who know so much more than I do and sometimes introduce one new piece of form to my routine, tying to increase my consistency. This video gives me something else to think about and to try new things.
@Gregory Ferguson No I do not hunt. The only thing like that I ever do is pest control on rats with my air rifle. Bowhunting is illegal in my country anyway.
I have been a firearm and shotgun shooter for years and just now started messing around with archery. Really just casually. I wanted to keep it pure and shoot instinctive and I think I'm doing pretty good. At 10 yards I can usually shoot around 6 to 8 inch groups with the occasional flyer. I was wondering what kind of reasonable accuracy would you expect shooting pure instinctive like this?
So ... I'm thinking - don't tie yourself down to a specfic technique early on. Experiment with all of them and gradually find what works best for you. Thanks to Matt and guys like him for sharing their expertise.
I'm glad he labels "instinctive" as an aiming method. So many of those instinctive guys say, "I shoot instinctive, I'm not aiming." If your eyes are open and looking at the target you're aiming, period.
Thank you for your video. I am just a beginner. Because for my case I don't have time to aim, instinctive shooting is my only option. Would you kindly tell me how long it takes to get 4-INCH group at 20 yards for instinctive shooting? Thank you very much.
The double vision is kind of like using a video camera. You can only focus on one distance while blurring what you are not focused on. Ideally i glance at the tip of the arrow with my "shooting eye" and immediately focus on the target while keeping both eyes open. That keeps me aware of where the tip is, my target, and hopefully where the arrow goes.
I disagree with it taking thousands of arrow shots to be able to hit your target consistently shoot instinctive. When I first began shooting over 30 years ago, I went the route of trying sites because I didn't know any better. I could not keep my arrows grouped for anything. One day I can across an article about shooting instinctive and thought, what do I have to lose right. I went from arrows all over the place to grouping inside an 8 inch pie plate the very first time EVER shooting instinctive. I then began stump shooting and was not long I was taking the heads off ruffed grouse. I did not shoot thousands of arrows over many years of shooting before I could do this. Actually, I shot very little. As a home builder I did not have much free time to shoot. I would shoot a day here and there and rarely shot 20 arrows at any given time.

Maybe it's a personal thing? I started off with instinctive, shooting about 60 arrows a day for about a year. Up to 15 yards I was pretty accurate but in Flanders we mostly shoot competition at 25 meters and I couldn't for the life of me get past an average of 7.6 on a 60cm FITA target, I switched to string walking and was able to get up to 8.7. That said, there might have been a lot of form issues that played into that as well and also... I still like shooting instinctive more than string walking because I find it more relaxing :)
i have bought lots of different gloves for shooting my bow but have ome problem split finger is causing me to get a lot of pain in my index fingert along the inner edige next to my nail on my right hand i draw with my right and my club prefers using splitfinger any one can come up with any ideas for a cure to this issue
I learned shooting a compound bow some 32 year's ago from a cousin in Kentucky and he was an avid Hunter that he has game animals from all over mounted in his house he's been in Bow magazines. I would set up targets from 10 yards out to almost a hundred yards and I always shot with both eyes open and I shot enough just sliding down the arrow and out always hit my mark I had targets deer size bear size and I would put the appropriate diagram of Where the Heart lung area is and I would pretty much hit that every time. Long ago I gave up bow and started hunting with a pistol and I use my 629 stainless steel 44 Mag and that was my dear gun after that. Now at 56 years old I'm wanting to get me a recurve bow and start hunting what do you recommend for a bowl and a proper weight that will take down a bear. The compound bow and I had back then was Bear brand Kodiak Magnum it was a justable weights from 45 lb to 65 and I shot it mostly at 65 what would you recommend for a recurve bow.
I would recommend a long bow (less stack, easier on the shoulders) at 45lbs or so. The Bear Montana would be a good choice. With a well tuned arrow, good shot placement, good sharp broadheads, etc you could take a bear with a 40lb bow.
I guess I’m a gap shooter. When I started trad bow, I kept in mind where a sight would be on a compound and place the target where the invisible sight is.
I'm a string walker, well actually, I'm trying to be one. I thought the idea of attaching nocks to your string that shows you where you crawl to for various distances was a good idea - I'm gonna buy me some more nocks tomorrow.
So if a center shot composite bow with arrow shelf or rest is a traditional bow, what is a non center shot long bow with no arrow rest or what is horse bow? Primitive bow? I just want to know the difference. Center shot composite bows with arrow rest requires much less skill than the other ones for sure.
Turaniko: I disagree with you. It does not take less skill to shoot a center shot bow with arrow rest. The skill level is the same, but the knowledge base is greatly different. When shooting a center shot bow with rest, plunger whatever, there is a greater knowledge base needed to understand how to tune that bow and the arrows. Shooting a "primitive" bow you only need to know how to set up and adjust your nock point and arrow spline. Center shot you have to know how to set up the nock point, arrow spline, rest and center positioning adjustment. But skill does not change. both require the skill of knowing how to draw, anchor, aim and release. But even draw and anchor are not as important as what we have all been taught. I shoot from many different body angles and draw lengths and anchor points depending on the shot I need to take. The most important factor is arrow spline and nock point, no matter if you are shooting center shot or not. Your draw length will likely never be so far off from what you originally set up your arrow spline to that will have any effect on the arrow flight or impact point of your arrow.
There's really no such thing as "traditional bow" vs. "non traditional bow". A flatbow made from a single wooden stave of Hickory is exactly that - a hickory flatbow. A composite recurve bow made of horn and sinew is exactly that. A recurve bow with a wooden core and fiberglass laminations is exactly that. An ILF Olympic bow is exactly that. A compound bow is exactly that. Yes, shooting a purely wooden bow with no shelf cut and handmade wooden arrows is going to be far more challenging to shoot accurately than an ILF aluminum Olympic bow with perfectly matched carbon arrows. In the end, it all comes down to what you want to get or experience out of archery whether that's accuracy, consistency, speed shooting, or the experience of the entire process of something like making and shooting a wooden bow with primitive tools, it's all up to you.

Real archers shoot thousands and thousands of arrows because this is what it takes to be great, everybody wants everything right now and so they look for all these work arounds but that's not what great archers do look at the great archers like Armin Hirmer and Mihai Cozmei or Barton for example..they do not aim ,when you throw a rock do you look at the rock or do you look at what you want to hit .

Please! The term "muscle memory" is just a slang term for procedural memory. Clearly muscle tissue has no memory! Procedural memory is a type of non-verbal memory of "how to do something" like ride a bike, play the piano, hit a baseball or, shoot an arrow into what you are looking at. With shooting an arrow it involves the skeletal muscular system and your sense of sight. Sometimes this is called "eye-hand coordination." In our body we have touch receptor cells that allow us to experience our body by "feel" without looking at it (your proprioceptive sense). This sense of interior "touch" is in coordination with our sense of sight is what is used by instinctive archers. It takes 1000's of arrows to get good at this type of non-aiming aiming. It's just like learning to throw a ball to someone. Look at a professional baseball in the outfield. A ball is hit to him and he moves his body into position and raises his hands, catches the ball, spins and throws it with complete accuracy to the catcher at home plate. It has taken 1000's of hours to gain this skill. He does not aim the ball. He doesn't close one eye, measure a gap to home plate and then throw the ball. It is all "instinctive" or, more accurately, it is all unconscious processing and coordination of the proprioceptive sense with the visual system. It is the most rewarding type of "aiming" in archery. You are truly "one with the bow and arrow" in instinctive archery. It is so cool!
archery cannot be shooting without aiming - call it as you want - instinctive, string walking , split, etc., but if the archers shoot the arrow without aiming, they should be isolated from the public
Kevin Beardsworth no assistive hardware, no mounted sights, no peep, no release, no cams, no stabilizer, etc. He’s shooting a recurve with a cutaway riser, so more of a modern twist on a traditional bow.
If guys are using the tips of their arrows or using different marks on their tabs to address the string why not just use a sight? What's the difference? Traditional archery is going the wrong direction
The difference is your not using a sight. The direction traditional archery is going is simply your opinion. Telling people to just use a sight is not going to steer traditional archery in the direction you seem to want it to travel. Having an aiming technique is vital without a sight to keep from wounding a potential harvest. What is your definition of traditional archery?
People don't trust their own eye-hand coordination and hours of practice to hone this ability to simply hit what they are looking at. They don't trust or have the patience to develop this extraordinary skill.

C’est justement à cause des ces « tricheurs » que les fédérations nous sortent dés règlements totalement stupides comme de vouloir cacher les marques sur la poignée alors qu’elles font simplement partie de la décoration de la poignée ou de devoir couper le tapis d’arc à 1cm au dessus de la flèche pour éviter qu’on s’en serve pour viser.... totalement stupide 😤😤

Nope, incredibly false. I do it all the time. It's very easy telling where the arrow will hit just by looking at the tip of the arrow and the angle of the bow. but you also have to consider the strength of the bow
If you've ever thrown something, it's the same concept. You don't aim what you are throwing, but know where you are going to put it due to muscle memory in your arms.
so many lies and bs. Lancaster should have pro staff and know better than use a hunter dude that goes hunting when he can`t see his tab and basically guessing where you hit caus you look at you target realt hard and long and does absolutely nothing for shoot execution .just ask Olympic archers how much time they spend aiming . where the arrow is pointed has nothing to do with where it hits (general direction only )and not once mentioning string picture
Morten Jacobsen olympic archery is a vastly different sport than traditional... instinctive shooting is a respected method of shooting traditional equipment, which does not have sights like olympic archery equipment. The only complaint I have is that he is not shooting a traditional bow... but his points still stand.
