be sure to read description box! Your question may be answered here
Hi everyone! Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoyed today's episode as much as I had filming and modeling for it! These are just a FEW of the many Traditional Dresses found throughout the Caribbean. In no way is it representative of every island's dress, or the vast variety of dresses for each island, however, this video serves the main purpose of exposing and bringing awareness to the presence and history of Caribbean traditional dresses as they exist independently and uniquely in each Caribbean Island.
The common theme that connects each traditional dress is their African roots. African slaves, were forced to abandon some of their cultural and traditional practices. However, they found ways to incorporate their rich heritage, identity, and influences from their European colonizers to create the dresses that we consider our traditional dresses today.
NOTE: There are only 4 dresses in this video. This does not represent every single island of the Caribbean. I am a college student living in the U.S and used my own funds to purchase what Caribbean dresses I could get my hands on. Ideally, I would have been happier with showcasing many more (all) of the traditional Caribbean dresses hailing from every island, but unfortunately, I had neither the funds nor the access to all. Due to this, I tried my best to get dresses from dress makers here in the U.S and in respective islands to have at least one representation from an island within the Lesser Antilles, the Greater Antilles, the francophone Caribbean, and Latin islands. Like I said, it would have been ideal to have all dresses, however, limited access, funds, and time constraints played major roles. I hope that you draw some knowledge from this short video and also share information not only about these dresses, but the countless others throughout the Caribbean that do exist.
Thanks & Walk Good,
Lyndsay

Where are all my Haitians, Jamaicans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominican's at?! Much love and respect to you all! Please note that not every dress of each Caribbean island is represented here. As noted in the description box, this was an independently funded project with limited access to a wide variety of dresses. But please understand that if resources and funds were not an issue, I would have LOVED to represent each and every dress. This being said, please be sure to go out and research the many different dresses of each island and learn about their own unique histories. The more we know, the more we all can grow. Lots of Love and Light, Lyndsay

Thank you for including Haiti 😀, they normally exclude Haiti as a diss. But in Haiti, we WEAR shoes, and we LOVE shoes 😀. There are men all over Haiti that are making some of the most beautiful shoes in Haiti, especially sandals, both colorful and leather sandals 😀. Haiti is also known for Arts/Sculptures, and Haitian Men making beautiful sandals are definitely part of Haitian's Arts 😀. The Puerto Rican outfit is also very popular in Haiti since forever in the blue (karabela) tissue and in some other bold colors, but we make our skirt a little smaller than the Puerto Rican skirt 😃. And of course us Haitian Ladies wear the headscarf in many ways 😃. Thank you for the love ❤😀.

This is cool. I am a black American and I know over here during slavery black women were made to wear head wraps because the white women were viciously jealous of all of the fancy braiding styles the black women were doing. They believed black women's hairstyles were seductive to white men, so they created a law that stated slave women had to cover their heads, but once that began black women were wrapping their hair so elaborately that the white women were still jealous...they thought they were stopping my ppl from being beautiful, but that's an impossibility lol. I must add that you looked beautiful in each and EVERY cultural outfit sister. Luv from South Florida.

My grandfather came to America in the 1960's and met my grandmother they had 4 kids, my uncle, aunt, aunt, who passed away, and my mother. They moved up north to Wisconsin. My mom met my dad and they moved to Illinois and had my sister and I. My entire life I went to schools that didn't teach about any other cultural except caucasian ones. I wanted to learn about my grandfather's culture and the traditional clothing but couldn't because he passed when I was 9. Anyway moral of the story thank you for making this video it gives me insight to my culture and the cultures around it. 😁

@lyndsayarcher
@lyndsayarcher 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for watching! I would have loved to feature as many islands as possible, however, as noted in the description box, I was a college student who personally funded all dresses featured. Being that I'm from the midwest, access to more dresses was very limited and so I did my best, within my means, to at least represent an island from the English-speaking, French/Kreyol-Speaking, and Spanish-speaking Caribbean just to briefly introduce non-Caribbean people and Caribbean's born abroad on the history and beauty of diverse traditional dresses that exist, a topic that rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. Thanks again for watching!

Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video! I actually borrowed this dress from a friend from Haiti (she now lives in the states) that she has had since she came to the U.S. I really wish I could directly point you to an online shop where you could find one. At the time of filming this video, I remember searching all over the internet to find the Karabela dress but I only came across three on Etsy made by a woman living in Haiti. Hopefully there are more options online now! I will continue looking and hopefully, if I find anything, I will certainly comment a site for you! In the meantime, you may want to check Etsy to see if there are any Haitian designers making different assortments of the dress! Also, hopefully anyone Haitian with knowledge of where one can purchase a dress sees this comment and will reply with suggestions. Best of Luck and thank you so much again for watching!

Hello! I hope you're doing well! Thanks for watching. Here's a link to a Haitian organization that describes more about the Haitian Creole Quadrille/Karabela national wear. The dress I am wearing in the video was graciously lent to me by a Haitian friend, but I know that there is a wide variety of different renditions of the dress :) I'm of Jamaican heritage so I definitely want to point you towards a Haitian org that would be more helpful! I hope this helps! restavekfreedom.org/2017/11/08/learn-traditional-haitian-dress/ You can also check out this blog by Haitian blogger, Jen Jean-Pierre, where she shows & talks more about the dress: www.commecoco.com/traditional-haitian-dress/

Hey Queen! Thank you for taking the time to watch! I really appreciate it and hope you enjoyed! I really wish I had a link for the Haitian dress, but a friend actually let me borrow it. She bought it the last time she was in Haiti and was kind enough to let me borrow it. If I ever come across one similar to it, I will be sure to post the link here! (the red and blue "belt" at the waistline of the dress were actually just two pieces of ribbon that I wrapped around the dress to pay homage to the flag). Thanks again for watching!
