Photographic portraits such as this are an interesting missing link between traditional painted portraits and their ‘modern’ photographic replacements.
Everything about the composition, the pose and the highlighting of objects such as the necklace very much hark back to a more traditional way of capturing someone’s likeness.
This photograph is also a sad reminder that as with many new inventions, a great many traditional paint based portrait artists very quickly found themselves replaced by a device which could perfectly capture someone in a matter of seconds, rather than potentially weeks of time.
