Hey guys! Today we’re gonna be taking a sharp look at one of my edgiest hobbies....traditional shaving! Yes, those old school techniques of shaving with a safety razor, straight razor, shaving brush and a puck of shaving soap!
But it’s going to be way more than just that. I’m going to be comparing the traditional shaving practices of the past with that of modern shaving equipment and products. Which is better? Well, that depends on many factors. Both options offer unique benefits as well as cost savings over more conventional options you might find on store shelves.
In the video I’ll give you a tour of my traditional assortment of safety razors, straight razors, brushes, soaps and then show you how I use them. Then I’ll test out the offerings and service of Dollar Shave Club and how it can fit into the daily grooming routine of a traditional shaving enthusiast like myself!
I hope this video gives you an informative look at two different shaving options and what might work best for your needs. I personally see value in both traditional shaving as well as Dollar Shave Club’s offerings.
Thanks again to Dollar Shave Club for being open to my crazy idea of making a video focused on old school shaving techniques and equipment!

Either I am COMPLETELY oblivious, or you don’t talk about it much but I have been watching your videos for years and I don’t think I ever knew you were a firefighter. Just an observation. As far as shaving goes, call it a blessing or a curse, but my facial hair does not grow in fast at all. I “shave” about as often as I get a haircut. Every 6-8 weeks. My wife is a cosmetologist so she takes her neck trimmers and cuts my facial hair back when she cuts my hair. Obviously, I could shave more often than that, but neither I nor my wife care how often I shave so the adopted method works just fine. :)

I have not shaved for 15 years as I have a full set beard but it really took me back to when I used to shave at 05.15 each morning before work. I used to keep everything in a pottery shaving mug which was my grandfather's and as he never had hot and cold running water it had a small receptacle for hot water and a little draining ledge over the water for the brush and razor. Absolutely brilliant video and kindest regards from over the pond.

I've been using a double edge safety razor for about 10 years now and I don't see myself ever changing back. I shave in the shower using whatever bar soap I use for the rest of my shower and I apply it with my hands, no brush required. I don't see it taking any longer than "modern" expensive multiblade razors and it does just as good of a job, plus I only spend 10-25 cents per blade depending on how many I buy at a time.

So this has got to be a fireman thing......We were just talking about traditional shaving the other day at shift change!I have a few of grandpa's straights, just not brave enough to not cut my own throat. Also have a few safety bodies, cool factor for sure!!Many of us use the DSC, AND most of us are using the executive blade (5 blade). Don't forget about the blade on the back of the cartridge, great for squaring off and cutting in edges.I do like the shave butter also, however I feel like it clogs the cartridge. Is the post shave stuff good or just smell good? Gotta be better than old school aftershave....you know alcohol based products that chemically burn your skin!Great vid, appreciate the look into your shave cabinet. And yes it may be nerdy, but others are right there with ya!Stay safe

Hey partner! I just came across your channel with this video today. Great video my friend! I enjoy shaving old school on a Sunday morning before Church. It was really neat to hear your experience and opinion on the matter. It may sound odd to some, but I feel that there are moments in something as simple as our everyday shave (for all men who need to shave), that we experience it... either in an "old school way, like the way Grandpa did it in 1945 when he served on the USS Franklin CV-13, Aircraft Carrier, or the way Grandpa did it in 1975. Of course, there is always the quick and easy electric shave. We can pick and choose how we have to do this on a daily routine to fit our need. Thank you for the video my friend!

I always had issues with safety razors with ingrown hairs and in general, never quite satisfied with the shave. I switched to straight edge razor or cut throat shaving, as some call it, four years ago and I no longer have those issues. To be fair, that is also because I prep my face considerably better since that time and I use much better creams. The only items I have replaced is pre-shaving cream (Proraso pre-shave), then shaving cream (C.O. Bigelow Premium with eucalyptus oil) and razor blades. It cost me $15 a year to shave this way and I get a much closer, cleaner shave. Thanks for the video.

Initially the twin blade cartridges (back in the day) were very affordable. But as the number of blades went up, so did the price. I switched to the double edge safety razor several years ago and haven't looked back. I think I pay 10 cents a blade and it will last me a week. I also appreciate the link to the past. While cleaning out my parents house last year after my mother passed, I found my fathers safety razor. It is now my daily razor. I remember trying it when I started shaving as a teen and getting a nasty cut. Enjoyed the video.

Thanks! I've thought about going with a straight razor in the past, but the fact is I'm too lazy and in too much of a hurry. The last time I used a safety razor, I nicked myself all over, partly because I was in a hurry, so that's probably not a good option for me either, but still very interesting to hear about. Idk about the dollar shave club, maybe try them at some point. I've been getting big packs of 2-blade disposables from Costco, and each one lasts me a while. I used to be able to dry shave and get good results, but my beard is getting coarser as I get well into my 50s, so now I need to at least wet it, and for best results use shaving cream. As for spending way too long, not at all. Anyone who wasn't interested could easily skip it.

I i agree with you on the traditional shaving. I went to DE razors years ago. Where I live the plastic cartridge blades were just too expensive. $25 for a 4 blade pack of the ones that gave me the least amount of razor burn. I went through 1 a week (sometimes more since they dull fast for me) thus spending $25 a month for just the blades. So I was wasting around $300 a year for just blades. My two favorite blades are the Feather Hi-Stainless platinum coated and the Gilette Silver-Blue double edge (DE) blades from ebay or amazon or wherever I see them sold in bulk packs and they run around $17 +/- for 100 blades which lasts me about 2 years. And I get a much closer and cleaner shave with them than the plastic cartridges - no more razor burns or skin issues either. At the time I paid $34 for a Merkur 23C long handle (it was worth it though). My favorite shaving cream/soap, is Creamo shave cream - original but I still use a badger bristle brush to work it into the beard. I do have a few straight razors but just haven't mastered them yet.

Wow, I missed this video. Been following you for the travel trailer. I switched to a traditional DE safety razor about two years ago. Life changing. I hated shaving before that & all of the modern blades would clog up on me or give me razor burn, or just didn't shave that close. I like cremo original shave cream although I did start out with traditional style shave soaps & I still use those too. Aside from the much better shave that I get, my favorite thing about switching to the old school shaving method is that I can buy 100 blades for on amazon for about the same cost as one month of the Dollar Shave Club's premium service. Amazon also has sampler packs on there of different blade brands & types which is how I found the ones that I like to use now. They don't all shave the same. What is your prefered blade? Do you have a soap preference? I'm always interested in trying new ones out. I have discovered the same pitfall of looking for vintage shaving gear. Oh, also, what kind of brush is that that you have? I've tried several and a lot of the stuff out there isn't very durable and they start losing a lot of bristles pretty quick. I would definitely like to find a better brush.

lilorbie lilorbie oh man, then you are committed. I plan to grow a beard when I retire from the fire department....I’ve told my wife that the first 6-12 mo after retiring that I am going to let it grow....then I’ll see if it’ll be a long term thing for me or not😀👍

homesteadonomics you are not the first person to tell that i need to be "committed" lol. i just like how i look with a beard/ moustache. i shaved off my first beard when i was 21. the welding job that i had,every time i went to lift my helmet, i would grab a handful of my beard. since it seems that i can grow hair easier on my chin. i was thinking if i let it grow long enough that i can have it transplanted to the top of my head. lol.

Noticed you store your shaving brushes with bristles up. I had read that shaving brushes should be hung on a rack to dry and for storage? Are they just trying to sell something that's not needed? Thanks. Great video.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 5 лет назад
Hammer when they are dry you can store them up, down...doesn’t matter, But it is better to hang them bristles down when they are wet. I can remember if I show the hanger I have but it is located at the bottom of my shelf and flips out to hold a wet bush....then slides back in when not in use.

@@homesteadonomics Hey Joe, I'm looking for a lock to use on a farm gate that is 16' galvanized tube. I'm thinking I will invest in some decent heavy duty galvanized chain and think brass is the way to go.....but maybe you can recommend a good weather tight non coroading lock that will slow and perhaps deter a trespasser. Any thoughts arevappreciated. Bill
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 5 лет назад
Little White Dory hey bill, I think a war-lok padlock would do you well. They are ‘disc detainer’ mechanism which the ‘lockpickinglawyer’ seems to think is pretty good...and have a boron shakle...shackle I think haha. If you wanted to do a bit of fabrication to make it even more resilent you could weld a tab on that gate that slides into a notch cut out of a pipe and then secure the padlock to the tab when it’s inside the pipe with a notch cut out. It might be hard to picture but many gates around here do that. Keeps bolt cutters from being able to grab the lock
@littlewhitedory1
@littlewhitedory1 5 лет назад
@@homesteadonomics is there a name for the kind of cut pipe n tab lock?
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 5 лет назад
Little White Dory no, it’s just a homemade thing. A piece of large pipe maybe 6-8” tall and 5-6” diameter is welded to the post that the gate closes against. And a horizontal slot is cut in the side that gate will swing into it. Then a tab is welded to the gate and when the gate is closed, the tab slide into that slot. Then the padlock is secured to the tab from inside the pipe. The pipe is what protects the lock. It might be overkill for what you are looking for but I really Like the set up👍😀

I have a couple of comments: 1. I'm perplexed by the "vintage" term for the double edge razors, because that's what I was raised on. I'm thinking to myself "I'm not that old, am l?" 2. This comes under that time factor category. This'll be existential: My face is mine, it is me. Same for my beard. To say that I have to economize time-wise to shave, kind of separates me from a part of me ...that a part of me is, let's say - annoying. I'm placing a negative value on my face, my beard, my skin, and the care I give it. That attitude can easily used against some or all of the different parts of me. And that's not healthy. So, 15 minutes vs. 5 minutes isn't a valued factor. I'm a guy, I like gadgets, too. Having a number of shaving gadgets is part of being a guy. It's a guy thing. Shaving, favorite razors, etc., taking the time doing a good job, being proud of the results isn't vain. Its having self-respect. It's a healthy attitude. I use my mind to think and make decisions. I use my body to carry out those decisions. It's all a part of who I am. I'll close with this: Mens sana in corpore sano. A sound mind in a sound body.

Yeah, I switched to using a dual edge safety razor a few years ago and I am very happy with my choice. Disposable razors/cartridges are just too expensive and inconvenient. I can buy 100 DE razor blades for cheap and they take very little space to store. You need to be aware that there really is a learning curve to effectively use a safety razor. It is not the same as a modern disposable. I was also unhappy with aerosol shaving cream. The stuff I was buying at Costco had WAY too much perfume for my taste. I would literally gag after spraying the foam into my hand. I switched to using Cremo shave cream that comes in a tube. It works a bit differently than the big foamy stuff but I find it works as well or better that canned shave cream. As far as straight edges go, I really would not recommend them to anyone. They are dangerous and a shave session can quickly go to a do-it-yourself surgery session if you aren't extremely careful.
