I bought my 50 cal TC Hawken when I got back from Desert Storm. I was 18 at the time and the NC state law back then wouldn’t let me buy an auto pistol, and I didn’t want another rifle. I was mad at the situation because my platoon leader was getting a pistol, but even though I carried an M9 and M16A2, it was verboten for me in NC (at that time). While my sergeant was filling out the paperwork, I walked around the store and saw the Hawken. Had to have it. It was an impulse buy, but I never regretted it. First time it was used was on a range at Ft Bragg. Everyone stopped shooting because of that distinct black powder sound. It was funny, here I am reading the manual the TC came with, doing it by the numbers, and having a crowd gathering just to watch it fire. Every time I fired, the whole range just laughed. I still have and fire that muzzle loader to this day.

Thank you for your service. I too, did a tour in the dustbowl. I had black powder guns before I enlisted in 89 and just as you saw at the range, still to this day people stop to watch them get loaded and shot. I enjoy shooting them, more than I do most of my cartridge guns and I really enjoy teaching others black powder shooting. It's not much of an art, but it's very relaxing...

Same for me here in germany. On our ranges they mostlely shoot semi autos or bolt actions. But when i hit the scene with my kentucky rifle and shoot everybody looks what's going on.And there are just a few who reject to try it.

Black powder shooter too. Great fun. NG. Pistol shooter for years. Became WIARNG Team capt. Lots and lots of .45 down range. One hand Bullseye style ( used to av 294 out of 300, but while i can still ( at 78) put all rounds in 7 or 8 ring at 50 ft, those 290 to 300 days are gone). But grew up in rural NJ, with 1776 re-enactors, Boone stories, the Last of the Mohins and Waterwotch novels set in my area, so owning a muzzle loader was a dream. At 50 got the Hawken and a Thompsen long rifle, to fullfill a dream. Dan'l Boone step aside! CW2 ( then) on the firing line. Being modest as CWO's are known to be, i admit i was a good shot but had my doubts about how good these antiques could be. Yes I love the big BOOM and nostalgia, but to my surprise, they were super accurate and powerful. For those who laugh at that, here is one shot: had an old metal shed on my mini- farm, with 4x4 posts and a big oak tree in line. Put up a target, 12x14 inch, with 2 inch 10 ring. Fired from bench at about 75 yds, iron sights. 50 grains pyrodex ( 2/3 normal). Went down to collect ball. Thought it would bounce off iron wall. Hey, it was my first try! It sure did not. Ball hit 9 ring, not bad. Went thru both 4x4 's, both corrugated iron walls ( ripping them up with 4 inch hole in back wall, and got about 1.5 inch into the oak. I was stunned. .50 cal kicks butt!

The Hawken Woodsman is manufactured in Spain by Ardesa, near the city of Bilbao, and is marketed in the USA by Traditions. It is a cheap but good rifle for the price. It is also manufactured in caliber 45 and was manufactured in caliber 54. Many in Spain have it to shoot in competition at 50 meters (55 yards). The truth is that with a 0.490" ball and a 0.015" patch it is a very precise rifle. Good and cheap to hunt. Greetings from Spain.

I've had mine for 25 years and shot a lot of lead through it... Definitely a working mans gun for its day... My biggest gripe is there aren't many places near me that let you shoot B/P anymore and there are only a couple of outdoor ranges within a 50 mile drive... Great video, keep up the good work and have a merry Christmas!

Same in west central FL where i retired. All indoor with a shotgun only outdoor club. No B/P. Used to shoot on my 16 acres of virgin forest and pasture in a small valley, with hundreds more around it, about 9 miles from MO capitol dome. Full of deer and turkey. After 57 years eife and I retired here. Mil injuries meant no snow shovels and walking back up hill to home became difficult. No hills here, no snow, no BP unless i drive long way. Really miss it. We even had 2 places to shoot matches in mid- MO, one private the other county run with covered benches, trap. Bp pistol and 100 yd rifle ranges plus toilets. Free! 😢

I bought my Hawkins 45cal at a Sear's & Rowbucks back in 1973 for $89 + finishing kit in the $8 Range. And right now its the second oldest firearm that I've owned. My reasoning for the black powder was for the double hunting tags for large game. Before black powder the state limit was 2 bucks a year, but you could harvest 4 by owning a black powder rifle. And I've taken plenty of game with mine including 4 big bull Elks over the years. I've even used it as a bird rifle by loading birds hot. It's black powder so you can use a 1 Oz load of the birdshot down the tube. As you aren't limited like a modern .410 shotgun shell. And when the prices of real black powder became expensive. I started making my own. I could make 5 lbs for the cost a quart sized can #4fg. I also participated in quite a few Mountain Man Rendezvous where there was no shortage of turkey shoots gonin on. Oh yeah, purchase a stainless steel bore brush if shooting BP. And use this to clean out the fouling. I've been able to shoot all day thanks to these barrel brushes. They can tame that barrel and make it easier to seat your load without struggling with a ram rod. And that sweet smell of black powder. There's nothing like it.

I have some real powder for it and some Pyrodex if I just can't find the real stuff. I actually have not seen GOEX on any shelf in Texas yet. On my last trip to Cabellas, I couldn't find much for muzzle loaders at all, seems the ammo run has cleaned up everything. Glad I have a decent stock of everything. I might, just for the fun of it, make my own powder and cast my own bullets... Just because I can.

I guess I would be considered adventurous. At one time I owned a TC Hawken with a aftermarket 36 inch .54 caliber barrel. Which was capable of burning 160 grains of 3f, pushing a 400 grain lead slug (because of the long barrel). The gun was built by a gunsmith who was involved in muzzle loader target shooting and with the 36 inch barrel was a good 300 yard gun.

Made in Spain by Ardesa, and sold in Europe under the Ardesa brand. I have the Ardesa Woodsman in .45 and is identical to that rifle.

I have been shooting a 50cal TC New Englander 100 gran pryodox with a TC maxi hunter round for close to 25 years, using still open sites. Up graded to fiber optic sites about 10 years ago, 100 yard I can place 5 shots in a one inch pattern. I still carry it during regular season just because I like the challenge

Have the same rifle sold by CVA. Really nice rifle and fun to shoot. I'm a lefty shooter and came across a left hand Hawken flintlock. The only thing I don't make is the powder. My granddaughter has her eyes on my guns. She has great taste.

Mac 10 or 11, not an Uzi! I wish he had the suppressor on it! It dumps 30 rounds in about1 second!

@@davidwhite1963 The firearm in the intro is in fact an Uzi, as can be seen as when it's on the table how the stock folds, the grip safety, and general look of it.

I have a flintlock version of this .50 cal Hawken Woodsman and my first shot out of her at 25 yards was dead on, barely an inch low bull's eye. That'll take a deer all day long. The closest I ever got to taking my first deer with it was while I was watching a doe that was staring right at me at 30 yards (I ground hunt) and I got flanked by a 10 point buck that walked right up in front of me and decided to feed 12" from my boot (12 inches, not yards). I mumbled a few expletives under my breath as I said, "You gotta be [...] kidding me. Really?" He was there for about a minute, me with my flintlock pointed down. I couldn't move because she wouldn't stop staring in my direction. Finally, something spooked her, be bolted, I raised up the Hawken and tried to hit him at 60 yards when he stopped & turned around, but overshot him as he ducked and went down the ravine. You can't make that stuff up. Lesson(s) learned.

I bought a used never been fired Traditions Springfield Hawken rifles fo $50.00 dollars, no double set trigger and no elevation adjustable sights, there is a trigger adjustment screw inside ... It is truly badass accurate with patched ball and shoots 385 grain Hornady Great Plains Bullets just as accurately ... 1” groups @ 50 yards, with a 1/48 twist barrel ..

I have the same complaint about mine as Hickok does, my cheek is a little difficult to get down far enough to line up the sights .. I had to turn my ball cap backwards ...

I have a hawken that I've been hunting with some. I probably average shooting it a couple hours a week just because muzzleloaders are fun. I use 100 grains of 2f olde eynsford powder since it's a little higher quality and consistency than standard Goex. I mainly shoot patched .490 round balls but here lately I've been molding some .500 minie balls and shooting those instead

I bought a Traditions Hawken kit in 50 caliber earlier this year. Did a lot of sanding, filing, dremel work, blued the barrel, stained and Tru oiled the stock. Haven't fired it yet, but looking forward to it. Should be loads of fun.
