This weekend I headed out for a gorgeous trot near Chew Valley Lake, and thought I'd share my tips for getting into trail running so that you, too, can enjoy the great outdoors like this!
What are your top tips?
This week's vlog is sponsored by Komoot, a trail-finding app and website that allows you to search for and use amazing trails around you, or create your own routes to follow. It's also super easy to navigate and find highlights near you - like some cool moments in this video!

Great tips - and would add that you can take up trail running at any age. I started at 53, finished last in my first event, fast forward 5 years and I'm fitter and stronger and won my age category in a recent race series!

YES, bravo Baggy!! I started running only 2 years ago at 57, and immediately started exploring the gorgeous trails around me... and just last month I won my age category on a really tough trail HM!!! It's a sport which teaches us that we are capable of far far more than we ever imagined possible!!

@@ildiko4047 Bravo Ildiko!!! When I started I committed to just 10min per day, but every day! Of course once out there I rarely just do 10min but so often that's what gets me out the door. I could barely run 2km when I started but for the last 8 months I've done around 400km per month!! Regularity / Consistency is what got me there!!

I love tail running - I feel so much less pressure than when road running. You truly can't go based on pace because of terrain and elevation. I just really enjoy the exploration factor.

Absolutely gorgeous route you picked there, what a pleasure!!! You give some important tips Flora, and it may seem obvious but I would just add good sunglasses! When I finally invested in a pair of photochromic running sunnies it just changed my world... extremely lightweight, they don't bounce up and down nor slide down, they change with the light conditions, adapting to running in and out of the forest from shade to bright light and even very late into the evening, AND they keep the bugs out of my eyes which is a huge thing around here where I live (especially spring and early summer tiny little flying bugs are like clouds in the air sometimes)!! Now I just need something not to eat the bugs!! 🤢🤤😂
@FloraBeverley

It was beautiful! And YES such good advice, I love my running sunglasses esp my photochromic ones. Haha I breathe through my nose which stops most flies, although I do occasionally snort them instead 😂

Running by time is such a good tip! Did a 22km trail run the other weekend which took me over 3 hours! Longest time I've ever been running but not the longest distance. Definitely taught me that no two trails are the same :)

Trail running helped me un-hate running! I ended up burned out from running, mainly from the pressuer I put on myself to be faster and faster... until in the pandemic, I started running in the countryside and got hooked. In trail races often I end up picking other runners' wrappers (I know it's mostly unwanted, but please avoid leaving rubbish behind). greet people, enjoy the landscape, take pictures... yes sometimes it's hard and you suffer, but all in all it's really worth it.

Great advice, indeed! For somebody who started to get more into trail running last year, and more into longer trail running this year (2+ hours), I can totally relate. One additional tip from my side: if you don't like vests for some reason, there are also very nice running belts into which you can put a jacket, your phone, some gels, and a soft flask, e.g. Salomon ADV Skin Belt or Thy Runningbelt, to name just two, definitely worth a look!

Great tips about hiking up hills 👌 another tip when I hike up steep hills is to run the last 10 meters or so and it will be easier to transition to running down the other side.

Nice tips Flora. I'd second the point about pacing, as it's more of a 'feeling' and perceived effort based on the trails you're running. Running trails at night is also an exciting element to add in once you're confident on the off-road terrain. I live in Berkeley so if you're ever keen to head north slightly from Bristol, I'd be happy to show you some of the hidden trail gems of the Cotswolds! Let me know!

Beautiful run and great tips! Especially the littering one. It's an absolute privilege to access private lands. Closing gates, picking up after yourself, and staying on the trail is so important to ensure goodwill between land owners and land users, no matter what country you're in. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming videos with the pup! Stay healthy!

One tip is to not trod on a root while running and twist your ankle :(. Just happened to me this past weekend. Thought I was through the treacherous section, resumed running and completely didn't see the root sticking out of the middle of the trail. Just feeling good again after healing up from a calf tear. Running is a funny business! Still love trail running though. I wouldn't run if I had to stick to roads.

Hello lovely! :) what a lovely route you had. I love how you talk to the animals on your way around :D i'm investigating Komoot (on your recommendation) but am struggling to navigate properly to add in trails and elevation etc. Do you have the premium subscription (is that where i'm going wrong?) any advice would be appreciated. Think it would be useful for me to have for my own trail running but also when me and hubby go to the Lakes for holidays and navigating up there too x

It does take a bit of playing around with to understand all the features, but I'm sure if you sent them a message with your exact issue they'd be able to help! Fx

Can anyone recommend how you go about getting trail shoes? Do you need to get your gait done like in road shoes? Or are they all supported due to the type of shoe? So I just pick the ones I like the look of 🤣🤣
@leanneruss1073
@leanneruss1073 2 года назад
I was advised to find the "trail equivalent" of the road shoe I wear - I use HOKA one one Bondi and was told the HOKA Speedgoat was pretty similar, and this seems to be the case. a running store will know what's best

@@leanneruss1073 ooh thank you! I've got the hoka archi I think it's called. Or arahi 😅 so I'll have a look at whats similar!
@FloraBeverley
@FloraBeverley 2 года назад
First off, whichever shoe you try should be comfy out of the box - you shouldn't have to break it in! I recommend trying on a bunch (once you know what 'type' of shoe you want e.g. supportive, minimalist etc) and choosing whichever is comfiest. It's worked for me so far! I haven't found choosing the trail equivalent to my road shoes great because on trail i like to feel what's under my feet, whereas Hokas have a large sole which doesn't allow for that. But they are super comfy!
