The RU-vid search function baffles me. I have been searching for ideas for trailer cranes for wood for a year, and only now, after having almost finished mine, i find your brilliant video. A lot of great ideas. That little thing to keep the wire on the front pulley wheel is really clever - i will implement that in my build tomorrow :) Subscribed.
Cheers mate . I watched this vid sometime back and made a crane and winch similar off of back corner of my Nissan trayback ute . I made about 16 "'lugs'..that is a piece of angle iron about 1.5 inches long drilled with a D shackle in it and a hole in both side .I bring a Makita tek screw gun and screws and screw the angle onto wood round ,lift into truck and leave the angle on the round to lift it up onto the logsplitter . The wood here in Australia is hard and very heavy and works great . Saves back now for 2 years . can fit 24 heavy circles on truck till full and up to weight .. Well done JR
I hope to start welding on a hydraulic dump trailer soon. A bad tornado came thru and killed several in the next county over. The sheriff's department called me and asked me to come over and work on saws to help the volunteers saw out the mess. Anyway that has slowed me up getting started on the trailer. I plan to put a Predator 212cc powered homemade winch with a capstan pulley on one side as well. Those rope capstans are super fast for this kinda work , and faster to get back to grab a new piece of wood , because you can simply strip the spool and run with the rope. I do LUV your work of art , I just see my own twist added to what you have created. I've wished for something like this all the way back from being a kid and loading heavy crap. 👍😉😀

Might I suggest a trailer tongue jack just under the mast? Crank it down and transfer the weight directly to the ground. Cheap but effective. Nice project. Take care. Doug
Douglas Thompson yes that is a very good idea. I had not considered that. I also want to strengthen the job at the bottom where it swivels. I think this is the weak point. As with anything it is being used for heavier things than I anticipated!

Roy Christophersen. Thanks Roy. It sure does. I used it to lift the rounds onto the log splitter at the weekend and split the whole trailer load without breaking a sweat.

nautilus 1, thanks. I now have a nice little log grab (tong) that I use with it. Makes it easier, quicker and safer. I hope to get some more vids of using it now we are entering logging season.
If you don't have a set of tongs wrap the cable around the block of wood and hook it into itself. Much safer. Notice I said block of wood because s log is something you can cut into lumber. That tree was a long before itwas cut into blocks

Yup was going to say that I have about the same set up and use log tongs they work well and can’t drop a round once under tension. Great vid nice job building your crane also like to multi use my kit to save money.

RG Tree Service. I’m so glad I made one. I use it on the back of my pick-up, on my small tractor, on the trailer and on the log splitter and saw bench. I have receivers on all five and a 12v Anderson plug on each. It can lift approx 250kg (500lb). Above that it gets a bit sketchy and I am waiting for the bang. I have upgraded the wheels to steel and the pins from 8mm to 12mm as both originals broke/bent. Also the log tongs make a huge difference.

You Jib project is really a brilliant idea, make the machine do the work ! I am surprised you got away with lifting off the pick , if the wood was slightly drier you may not have been able to lift off it, and if one of those rounds dropped it would smash the body of your trailer, (or you if it bounced), I think you would be much better making a scissor grab, that way you could just lift the rounds into the trailer, and as soon as it touched the bed you can lift the jib up again for the next load. Well done you !
Englishman French, thanks. I had been thinking about a jib/hoist for some time. A couple of weeks ago a tree was being cut that had fallen across the road. There were large rounds for the taking and they were really heavy. I didn’t have a chainsaw or the time to cut them smaller. It took three of us to lift the larger ones. After this I decided it was time for a hoist! I know what you mean about it falling from the pickeroon. It only did it once and am now more careful. Will make the grab soon.

First use I have ever seen of a picaroon that I might use! Or I may just put a handle on a heavy eyebolt, whap it into the wood, then using the handle to screw the bolt into the wood. On second thought, sharpening the tip of the bolt is the way to go. The contraption could be used as a picaroon is generally.😁

how much time and money did you have in on the jib, can you cover more of that. i think most people are interested in how to make this reasonable and safely. using some solution to save your back with a cheap winch and be able to load logs into trailer, maybe into truck bed or even standing with log splitter
I had the winch given to me but without controller. I had to buy some heavy duty relays that were about £30. The steel was all off cuts I probably paid about £15 for. Then long bolts for the pivot points I had from other projects. So probably have about £50 into it. Difficult to say on my time as I do it for fun, so maybe 8 or 10 hours. Maybe a little more with lots of ‘thinking’ time between the odd hour or two I worked on it. It also evolved somewhat. Hope that helps. I would love to put out another video but I am so busy doing other things. Bandsaw mill is one I am making now and will do a video when I have finished.

Came here just to see if he would use the crane to lift up junks of wood instead of actual logs long story short he used it to lift junks ya i know oak is heavy ive dealt with plenty of it but dude come on now just toss the junk in or haul logs save your back and save your time
@@tinkertime7165 nah you made it so you had to. Use the crane for logs haul the logs home drop em there saw it up there isn't your time worth more to you?
@@dieselnation555 I don’t take logs home because it makes so much mess. The amount of logs I use will mess up my front yard. I have minimised the handling times nicely.
@@tinkertime7165 i hear alot say that and i understand but is there a turn around or lot that wherever you haul back to you can also saw up? Do you tow the wood away with a truck and trailer or directly to your house?
@@dieselnation555 I have not had a lot or space to saw up. I try to split the wood and then trailer it back to the house and stack to dry from the trailer. On occasions (like this video) I take the rings back to the house and split them there. Although splitting makes some mess, it’s generally easier to clean up as they are bigger pieces. Recently however I have a small place I can process the logs. It all depends on how far away I have to travel, if I can get my log splitter in there, and how quickly I need to move the logs from the place. So there are a few ways I do it, but I always try to limit handling times. I recently made a bandsaw mill (no videos yet) which has added another element. This gives me ‘flitches” which I cut to burning length.
