For the price of all those extensions, you should have an extra spool gun on hand for anything other than aluminum. In this case, a small spool of flux core would have been the ticket. MIG is in your wheelhouse of skills, and if not wanting to drag out a bottle and try to keep the gas from blowing away was your only deterrent, the flux core is your outside hero.

quick tip for a better restart is to immediately after you terminate the arc flick the molten metal and flux off the end of the electrode it will make restarts much easier

Gettin' it done! Cuz sometimes good is good enough! I made my own 104' (random I know) extension with 2 very heavy duty ends and a bunch of pounds of 4 gauge wire. Works great to reach most of the way to the front of my yard from the 220 in the garage out back!

I've made a few over the years, all have now found permanent homes in the shop, but I have yet to be able to make them as cheap as I can buy them, so why bother unless you have some free wire, eh?

Stick welding like mig or tig just takes practice. Those welds don't look too bad for someone who hasn't done very much of it.

I'm the same way when it comes to welding personal stuff. My motto is: If you ain't making money off of some of your welds, then the looks ain't worth it! :) Paint 'n primer can make em look decent too lol.

Next time on something like that try a 6011 great for small trailers and stuff like that. Works well on rust and paint and really easy to use. With a 6011 no need for tapping to restart the arc either. Awesome video big fan!

Shop was full of crap and that trailer is a pain to get inside even when it's clean. Didn't need to drag the gas bottle outside, also didn't then need to set up a wind shield to protect the weld. Hadn't done it in a while so figured why not?

Honestly, I'm a little surprised that you just didn't go ahead and fabricate a trailer specific to your use. At the same time, if you pick this trailer up for a low enough price, it might have cost you more to build one then to modify this one. Which was it?

7018 is not that hard, push in hard enough to touch the flux, slight lead angle, let the rod burn itself. That’s what she said anyway

yeah, don't have a problem running it at all once the arc is lit, I just don't have the experience and finesse to get the strike right reliably. Practice makes perfect though!

Does welding with trailer still connected to vehicle affect the vehicle electrical system?

didn't affect mine. Electricity seeks the path of least resistance, that's from the electrode to the ground clamp, which was hooked to the trailer. I've welded on my jeep a few times without issues, even without disconnecting the battery.

Home Depot has extension cords just as long and made with the same gauge wire for half the cost. HTP can keep their obnoxiously over priced extension cords.

I don't see any, especially not with welder plugs, unless you want to build your own, which is only a minor savings in my area
