In this video, I'll be installing a Tekonsha 118845 trailer light wiring kit on my 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. This kit adds a separate lighting circuit to isolate the trailer wiring from the vehicle's lighting circuits. It can also be used for lighting on other accessories that mount to the trailer hitch and block the existing vehicle lights. Anything that uses the flat 4 connector.
Installation is a little complicated but should still be achievable if you have done vehicle wiring in the past (like a stereo install).
If you are going to tow with your trailer, understand that the Bolt EV and EUV are not rated for towing, so you will be doing so at your own risk. That said, the drivetrain is certainly capable of towing a small trailer, and the vehicle weighs as much as a compact truck, so it should have no issue doing so. Just use common sense, follow basic towing guidelines and local laws.

Can’t thank you enough for this video and the hitch install video. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to pull it off, so you essentially saved me the $400 U-Haul would have charged for the labor. THANK YOU!

Thank you for doing such a great guidance through the process. I would have been lost without this.

Your video was a great help with my installation. Same Tekonsha kit on 2023 EUV. I put on my hitch about a month earlier (Torklift) and removed the rear bumper cover for that. I ended up removing it again for this job because those GM electrical connectors drive me up a wall! I cannot get the connector to release and pull apart unless I have two hands on it. Anyway, the second time removal of the bumper cover was a little easier than the first because I was more confident on where to pull and how hard to pull to release the fasteners but I probably didn't save any time...just reduced frustration. Getting the bumper cover to release from directly under the tail lights is always challenging until you get the "pop". Your tips and comments were helpful. I took more time than I expected to run the power wire to the front and feed the rear connectors through the air vent. The connectors had to pass through a certain way because of their size and they are zip tied already. Thanks again!

How long did it take you to wire it?

The need to tow is the only reason I have a gas powered vehiicle.. While agreeing the Bolt as capable of towing, my comfort level would only allow for a bike rack/storage box type of setup. Your video is clear and helpful enough that I could have my wife do this. Our 2023 Bolt EUV, LT trim, is driven daily and our gas vehicle has not moved for a month.

Same here, honestly. I have an old Suburban that sits in a carport, only getting used when I need to tow or haul something big.

I found your video to be more informative than the instructions. Etrailer has this wiring harness from Curt, part #C45ZV or Curt#56521. It appears to be identical to the one you use in the video. My car is a 23 EUV Premier built in mid '22. When I went to empty out the "trunk", my car has Super Cruise, so the forward portion of the pit has electronics for the Super Cruise. Between that and the hatch threshold is a rigid foam tray that makes it difficult to get a grip on the lower edge of the threshold cover. A single T-45 torx screw holds it in place. I had to use a couple plastic pry tools to move the edge of the threshold plastic out of the way and then the foam piece comes straight up. Then, pulling the lower edge of the threshold plastic toward the front of the car and then straight up, it comes out nicely. I followed your example of routing the wires through the passenger cabin to under the hood and duplicated your connection to the power lug on the fuse block. Grounding the trailer wiring was easy, as looking forward behind that driver side panel where you mounted the black box, there are two ground lugs that are very reachable and the ground wire from the black box easily reached those. In my car the two grommets that are on either side of those one-way air exhaust vents were untouched. The kit connectors for the blinkers would not fit through those holes, so I cut those wires (green passenger side and yellow driver side) and poked them through those grommets and then used shrink wrapped splices to complete that portion. I had a piece of 1/4" ID rubber fuel line, so used your idea of splitting it and protecting the wiring from the edges of that square port, as you did. My car has a pop-off port cover about 3-4" square in the driver side panel, so I used that to bring the 4-flat connector wiring through. When the trailer wiring is not in use, I bundle that 4-flat wiring with a piece of velcro and stuff it back in the hole. Fits nicely and is easy to retrieve. Thanks so much for the videos. I used your video to add the trailer hitch also. And after watching both videos, I did the wiring project immediately after the hitch install when the bumper was still off the car. That made the only reason to go under the car was to remove those two black nylon push-pins that hold the lower part of the bumper fascia in place. Incidentally, does anyone know the exact size of those two black nylon pins? Being unfamiliar with how they work, I pretty much destroyed them when removing them.

Nice job on the install and the video. It sold me on the idea of having it installed by a professional.😊

Agreed. It’s not an easy job if you don’t have much experience with the plastic panels in modern cars.

Thank you for this! The trim panel fasteners, while similar, look like they have been improved from what was used in my '20. Those seemed to be designed for single use and were quite easily broken. Where was the black box finally mounted?
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 Год назад
I mounted the box up closer to the wheel well. I’m sorry I didn’t get video of that, but it was actually something that I had to go back and change after fully reassembling because it was rattling while driving.

This is very nformative, I never thought about consequences pertaining to using stock components that likely would overload the existing LED lighting system. Also not many highlights on the Bolts ability to tow. Thank you.

How close is this to the process for the EV? I can't find any demo that is specific for the EV, just the EUV. Kind of annoying.

What number trailer wiring kit is required for my 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV ? Will Tekonsha TK87VR work? How / where do I obtain this?

What do you think of having a second 12 v in the trunk instead of ripping the car appart With some kwiq connections to remove and charge
@carlosjimz

Great idea, isolated battery ground and hot. but my question is in case of a short circuit in the trailer lights, is there any chance to blow anything in the car since the extra battery will not be grounded to car?

Has "Not Me" have any towing efficiency numbers on how much the mileage is impacted by the sqr drop?
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 Год назад
I don't personally have towing efficiency numbers, and it will also depend substantially on the shape/size of the trailer.

Will this same trailer light kit work with my Bolt ev 2022? I know you have a EUV and box says not for EV but I’m thinking the connections are the same? What do you think?
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 Год назад
Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with the newer Bolt EV so I can’t say for sure that the Bolt EUV kit would fit. It would make sense that the wiring is the same, but automakers often do things that don’t make sense.

At 7:30 in the video... How did you get the wiring connector apart? I pulled the red lock tab but couldn't pull the connector apart.
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 Год назад
The lock tab holds a second lock that you have to push to remove it. It's not a great design, but its one that just about everyone seems to use.
@terrycannon3604

I had a hard time with that also. Luckily, the plugs on the new wiring connectors in the kit are the same, so studying them, I was able to figure it out. I think I ran up most of my cursing total for the project on that connector.

Having the same issue. Red locking tab up and pushing in on the small black tab, it won't pull apart. Used the one in the kit to practice, it comes apart no problem. May have damaged by it now messing with it.

It is weird watching this and seeing the small differences between a 2022 EUV and 2022 EV. On mine the parking lamp wire is mounted to the lamp on the body through that hole and there is a large foam grommet that fills that hole. It is not easily apparent how to remove it. I am using a clamp version of the harness that does not cut the wire. Will see how it goes. On the back bumper you have large green and black wires at mark 9:53 that I do not have at all.

Thank you for your video, first thing, why you pass the two rear connector by the depression hatch instead of cutting those two little wires and pass it true the wiring groomet just beside the depression hatch, and reconnect those two little wires with the same kind of splicing connector used on the front fuse box, by this way, you dont have to install the rubber hose protection to prevent the wire scuffing on the sharp edge. The second thing, for me, the easest way to secure the power wire in the fuse box, I will put the connector over the existing nut, then screw a same tread nut over the new connector. Why we cannot connect this fuse power wire directly on the interior fuse box on a spare all time powered position instead passing the power line true the firewall? Another time, thank you I'll keep this video in my registered section of youtube.

@wrenchingfool5284

The EUV does, or at least mine did (I verified on mine), but I’ve heard that some of the Bolt EVs now don’t. All the pre-2022 Bolt EVs did.

@@wrenchingfool5284 Ah, i forgot to mention that it is not present on the EV after 2022 but it's indeed there on the EUV. The motor gets hot very quickly during long pulls in the EV. The EUV does have it in every year as far as I know. There's a video of the normal bolt on a lift and it has no cooler for the AT oil besides air

That tekonsha harness is not there best Look the one for the tucson2022 really 100 time better 1 plug 1 connector and bingo For my bolt im a bit disappointed fir the mess il will be to get 12 v Thinking of having separate 12 v in the trunk just not to fuck arround. Back to front Thanks for the video💪👍 anyway 💪👍
@wrenchingfool5284
@wrenchingfool5284 Год назад
I think part of the issue is that they never intended for the Bolt to tow, so no consideration was made towards making it easy for even a trailer light harness to be installed.

Thanks for the advise on the Tucson 2022(Curt Manufacturing T-Connector 56420) that is 1 plug indeed. How do I install in my 2023 euv. Since it's only one plug!!! Input appreciated

I know what. Take a practical EV and tow things with it, race it, hey, try to make it fly. What is wrong with people?
@terrycannon3604
@terrycannon3604 3 месяца назад
You can put a bike rack on the hitch. I use mine to tow a small utility trailer so I can bring bulky things home, like lumber from the hardware store.

That is the exactly the whole history of the progress of the human race. People fiddling with things, making them better. If it were left up to people like you, we would still be naked and cold wondering how to make fire.
