Thank you so much for making this! When you are in a game, are you looking to see what the throw was so that you know the rotation? Or is it mostly chemistry and knowing what your teammate would have gone with in that situation?

What's up Lige! I've played long enough for the catching to be instinctual. regarding chemistry, we had actually implemented that new move since we played Bravo so many times. So there was some growing pains!

Nice suggestion on practicing my just letting the disc go by during catch and swooping it up with the appropriate (right or left) trailing edge grab. Think I'l at least try that.

hmm i was thinking why did you got trailing edge, it looks like right hand woulda worked. but your explanation cleared it up, if you went for right hand the disc mighta bounced right off

I understand the logic perfectly. I've experienced trying to catch a flick that I can barely touch with my left hand and it spirochetes off with no chance.of me catching it. Thorwing little vertical backhands between each hand, you can let the disc hit your hand on the edge of the palm on the thumb side and even if your hand is "too far" inside, the disc just climbs back into your hand. It's like sidespin on a disc hitting the rail, if you shoot pooll: If, say, the cueball hits adjacent rails, it spins long because the first rail gave it running english. If it hits opposite rails, it comes up very dead - losing speed and coming off more perpendicular than you expect. Unfortunately, translating this knowledge into action - beiing able to assess what's happening quickly and being able to throw myself horizontally, or just being able to close on things fast seem like much bigger problems for this old man. Very cool video, though, Rowan. Thanks for elucidating these very interesting - and useful for someone a little more athletic - concepts.

One other question, when we warm up, we're often throwing face to face. But in game, the catches we drop are the ones we're running laterally to, or chasing down. Reads from up high, etc, that don't often happen in warm up. Is there practice for that other than "get in a game situation"? Same for hucks. We warm up throwing from a static position. But in game, we catch a disc with momentum and sometimes throw it immediately. the momentum often throws off my throw, (i.e., too much disc speed and it turns over too much). How do you fit this into practice?

3 person throwing or tossing the disc to yourself, catch with some momentum, throw to your partner. Work on moving while warming up, it's only a static activity if you make it! Add some in/out cuts or laterals in there. Try to controlled over throw your partner so they can work on reading and catching junk throws.

It can be tough to practice everything in a normal practice setting because coaches and captains need to teach strategy, fundamentals etc. Grab a friend or two and do these game specific aspects in a small setting. Putting in that work outside of practices and games is where you really imprvoe

Is this something you can see in flight? Or do you have to begin to translate "this was a right hand backhand" to know which edge?

I have to think it was intuitive. lots and lots of practice all coming together. I do believe it was a split second decision because my body was setting up for the trailing edge the whole time.

@@RowanMcDonnell I've definitely had the disc spin out of my hand, and realized, I knew before I grabbed it that was gonna happen. Just need to hone that reflex.
