What is really amazing about this video is someone held the camera horizontal not vertical, didn't say stupid things the entire time, and held the camera steady the entire time. A real rarity!

Now that, is a momentous peel. I feel like I just watched the grand parent bridge of the 11 foot 8 can opener bridge show their grandkid how it's done.
I saw it happen as a tower operator in Chicago. Not only did eight auto racks (fortunately empty) get their tops peeled off, but they almost took out some trackage used by three CTA routes in the process.
Every railroad has a department that's responsible for routing over size / over height / high cube rail cars. The clearances for all tracks in the system are known, and these auto racks should have never been assigned to that train. Somebody in the office done F'd up.

This is the first time I've seen this cut of the video, and something stood out right from the start. Part of one of the rail car's roof is peeled back before it gets to the bridge. The only logical explanation would be that the train stopped, rolled back, and then went ahead again. Has anyone ever seen any details on how/why that happened?
I was driving an autorack truck, new on the job. Those trucks are always over the limit but it is calculated into the route. I asked about a specific bridge, the boss and the experienced “trucker Fucker’s” told me that it would fit. I pointed out that the underpass had gotten new asphalt on and the clearance was lesser. They said that i should go, so I did. I crashed, and guess who let he high and dry? Yep, the boss and “colleagues”, lost my license for that and got fined, since it is driver’s responsibility. So yeah, never ever trust anyone, do the research and don’t take anyone’s word for validation.
Yes u r right.I drov semis for 33 years ,up to 15 foot high trailers in UK .I had to back up from many a low bridge ( innacurate signs ) it was my responsibility.Even had to avoid a no heavy truck route once and ò had guys in my cab say why you going this way ,the other guys dont avoid the restriction.My reply its their license they risk not mine.
Why is it that, at the beginning of the video, the leftmost container is already open as if the load had already attempted, stopped, backed-up, and then tried again as we watched. Secondly, who could have been that fortunate enough to be at this remote(?) location to film this interesting event? I’d like to see an uncut take, that is how does the clip start? Thanks for anybody that knows more about this. It seems this account is for commercial licensing. I wonder what the videographer knows about this?
that's what I don't understand. the way the train takes so long to slow down seems like the engines are going and its just the roof slowing the train down. like the engineer just thinks its a slippery piece of track or something and backed up.
From factory to scrap! But dealerships that ordered those cars for stock or specific customers are now in a bind. They'll be scrambling to get replacements from other dealerships. And customers who special ordered a car are really screwed.
@@mark351 true enough however if they are kia cars it is not easy to believe they are not better off the local scrapyard is nicknamed the kia graveyard because 80% of the wrecks are KIA and likely half the owners were KIA(killed in auto)

@@deepspire something should have flagged in management or the assembly and assignment of the train that the track route had a low bridge, Perhaps the train got detoured from its normal route and no alarms went off. Some people probably got yelled at regardless.
I've watched this like 6 or 7 times and still amuses. Have seen this in Chicago with containers on a low bridge and all the empty Nike shoe boxes laying there

There is a bridge in Milwaukee that is too low for tri level auto racks... excess height cars need to be set-out before proceeding on the route under this bridge... Many years ago we had a Chicago crew shear off the top of an loaded autorack at this bridge, the car was sent to Cudahy car shop to repair the car... after a few weeks the shop released the car to be picked up by the railroad, and the knucklehead crew picked up the car and ran it under the same bridge! Sheared the top off a second time... You cant make this shit up!
Where is this at? I know that they can't go through the Amtrak station. But excess height cars go through Milwaukee daily. They typically just go onto the bypass for CP rail. Or is this bridge on the UP? The new line typically gets excess height cars as well.

I'm confused as hell because the way this was shot implies that there'd been a previous "shaving" of a few cars previously. There was a stop (perhaps for a red signal where the train rolled back a little?) and then the scraping continued for the first car we see, which already had most of its roof gone, and so on
My guess is that they were switching a yard, so moving backwards and forwards to drop off or pick up cars from different tracks. If they'd stopped at a signal, the train might have rolled back a little, but not _that_ much. At the start of the video, the train's going fast enough that it must have had at least a few car lengths of run-up.

All jokes aside, between the yardmaster letting these cars out of the yard, the dispatcher not catching this clearance issue and changing the route, to the crew, a lot of people dropped the ball on this. Also, with a bridge overpass like this, there usually is a high - load detector before a clearance issue location. Either there was no detector (?why not?) or it wasn't working properly.
Finally, some else on here who understands how the railroads actually work... too many "experts" on youtube who dont have a clue! What railroad are you with?
Thank you! I worked in transportation for a decade and I'm stunned to see how many people are saying it's the driver's fault. The fact they're calling the Train's engineer a driver is your first clue. But yes, this was a failure on many many levels.
@@erict5234 Tuckerton Railroad. Also, I'm sure there's damage to the railroad bridge that these cars hit. The whole thing would have to be inspected & repaired before anything could run on it again! I'd be leery being in the same position as the filmmaker!
What floors me the most is its obvious the train stopped, reversed, and then basically the engineer was like, eff it lets open a few more up for laughs
My dad was an auto hauler in the 60-80's. He used tell us stories of things like this, where someone didn't pay attention to bridge clearance and would rip the top off new cars or trucks. Even better vehicles weren't secured on trains (before covered box cars) and they would fall off the train as it rounded a bend. I would've loved to see that on video.
Imagine being a kid wanting a mercedes or something like that and you happened to live near a bend in the train tracks and a brand new car just literally fell in your backyard

@@ems7623, the word is literally derived from 'engine', so an 'engineer' is an "engine operator". That an engineer also designs and builds technical stuff is a later addition.
Apparently the train was diverted onto this track because normal track had trains on it. The controller who switched the tracks by remote control, from his/her office, failed to check the maps for the height of bridges. This track is normally used by oil trains, as it has an oil refinery at the end. Oil cars are low, but car carriers are 2 or 3 levels and much higher. Nobody checked. Controller didn't check, drivers didn't check. They have maps in the train cabin. Driver shoulda checked maps.
Somewhere, there's a folder with many documents regarding this incident. The documents probably cover many topics such as job loss, lawsuits etc etc. I'd be interested in the one with the dollar figure for the entire cost at the lower right hand corner.
@Aloha Akahai Need to look close, there were quite a few that were damaged. It showed one shoved through the rear doors of the railcar and a bunch with roof damage.
@Aloha Akahai autos were all junked. Standard practice to junk even slightly damaged autos to avoid any libel or insurance issues that may crop up years later.

I work at a company that repairs these exact type of hightops, among other types of rail cars. It's intresting to see how the damage we fix actually happens.
This happened a couple of times in Locust Point yard on CSX in Baltimore. The loop through the grain terminal and Domino Sugar has a low street overpass and racks have accidentally been sent around it. The last time I know it happened was after they had discontinued the yardmaster position in the yard, so there was no one there to spot the mistake. "Damn, why is it pulling so hard all of a sudden. Better give it a couple more notches!"
@@tripplefives1402 I was a CSX engineer and was relating what I heard about the one Locust Point incident, where the engineer involved actually did not pick up on what was going wrong and gave the locos more power and destroyed more racks and autos.
Isn't it amazing how they want to save a few dollars and it whines up costing them a fortune? Time and time again we see it but the powers-that-be just never seem to learn that lesson.

This happened in Memphis September 13 2020. It is a Ford transport train consisting of Norfolk Southern and Canadian Pacific autorack train cars. The vehicles inside are new Ford Explorers and Lincoln Nautiluses.
I imagine the railroad and Ford's insurance companies will work things out, the damaged railcars will get repaired or replaced, and the damaged vehicles will be auctioned off through CoPart for auto parts and salvage. I bet many will end up overseas patched back together and put on the road.

It's amazing to see how much energy is still stored at such a low speed. I see huge concrete trains near me (because there is a factory there). They are literelly rolling 5km/h for 2-3 kilometers while slowing down in order to stop. The train starts braking (even though it's slow to begin with) at one station and comes to a complete stop about 500m after the other station...
This reminds me of the scene in "Smokey and The Bandit" where Sheriff Buford T. Justice says to his son: "Duck or you're gonna be talking outta your ass".
I've seen loads of videos of trucks smashed against a certain railroad bridge. I suppose it's fitting that when a train smashes into a railroad bridge, that a lot of cars still get destroyed.
These were already wrecked cars. Thee forces involved would have done entirely different damage to them. Pretty sure they were being sent back for inspection and scrapping elsewhere.

Worked at a rail freight terminal, trucks on one side, boxcars for unloading on the other. One day,while shunting the cars in, they had two auto racks in the string. Tore a third of the warehouse roof off…..oops
