Cut him some slack. That is the absolute hardest part of the voice to sing in. You have to have very decent technique to even try. Not to mention the numerous times you have to go in and out of falsetto. It is a song that can easily thrash your voice. Considering the difficulty level, I would say he is pretty good.
Completely agree with you! Most other bands would just play it a half or whole step down. But he sounds damn good as he is! Seriously, there's so many bands that sound absolutely terrible live. I don't know what people are complaining about here..
Patrick Fewell not to mention he made the first video 10 years ago when his career was starting, this is 5 years later when his career is full blast, takes a toll on the old pipes
How delightful was that ! Those kids will never forget that. Thanks Pat for letting those kids be a part of something that will encourage them for life.
I am an old Rocker, but these guys are GREAT!!! Their style is fun, and very unique on all their songs. I saw one show where after singing "Soul-sister" the lead singer ran off stage, autographed his shirt and gave it to a handicapped girl. She was so excited!!! That sold me on these guys!! Keep it up guys, I look forward in listening to ALL of your music for many years!
The 7 year old daughter of the Mexican couple I visit plays this song all the time. I wonder when it became a kids favorite? Did this video start the trend? It's so funny because the kids can hardly get the repeated references to "Mister Mister on the radio", or even Like a virgin , you're Madonna". And in this age of totally depilatorized daddies, the line "my untrimmed chest" must totally go over their heads. Even so, I'm glad they love it.
As a singer and a very good one, with a mid to high tenor register, I can safely say that this is an incredibly hard song to sing. Not only does it put incredible strain on your voice, as it's mostly up there in the high B/C territory, but with all the words and phrasing, breathing is limited. It really takes its toll out on you. Although Patrick Monahan is a great singer, you won't hear him sing this live as he does in a recording. It really knocks the voice for six. I'm drained, physically, after singing this and yes, that's note for note. There are lots of songs out there that really could never be repeated in a live set or the singer could kiss goodbye to any songs that came after. This is one of them. I can sing this, but like I said, possibly the hardest song I've sung and I can sing Led Zeppelin, Queen, Foreigner, Toto, Michael McDonald and all the high vocal range singers.
This is now one of favorite videos of all times. Watching those little girls light up was really awesome, the boy was digging it too! The song isn't bad either. It's great to see kids having so much fun, we need much more of this. Thanks so much.
so talented voice. one in a million voice. thank you Mr. Pat Monahan from the bottom of my heart for sharing us your talent. Hope in the future generation, someone like you will emerge.

All your songs make me want to keep working on fulfilling my own dream. Music is really everything to me, and by the quality of your tunes, I can tell it is the same for you too!
okay as one of those kids (the girl in the red train shirt) the reason we were up there is he invited us up, he invited me up first by pointing at me and saying “you are the cutest thing come up here and dance with me” then he invited all the other kids in the audience up because it was a small concert and there weren’t too many of us. yes, of course it was awkward we were children, yes, of course we weren’t “good” we were children. i was 8 at the time.
You're adorable! All of you! You remind me of my nieces, who were a little older but loved the song too and this is exactly what they would've done. Brings back great memories. :)
Let's change the attitude here. Train is a great band and Patrick Monahan is a great singer... I saw him this past month on a concert he did recently playing on the AXES channel on UVerse... Awesome, Awesome, Awesome, The entire concert.... These types of notes will make any grown man cringe.... He is in great shape now, and his voice is able to withstand the rigors of songs like this one and Drops of Jupiter... WTG Patrick... great letting the kids join in... The haters on this board need to get back to their bags of chips and stop criticizing things that make us smile.
Beautiful 🥰👊 this is the amazing expression of true loves song! Hey there mister mister! Children show true gangsta straight up 🤣. Truth, no matter how you Slice it! Apple pie and smiles!
Pat helped out my band for a few weeks back in the 80's in Erie, by singing for us when our lead singer had vocal cord nodules... We had a blast, partying at the French Quarters bar, way, way after closing time... We all knew he had the elusive "it" - we pretty much knew even way back then, that he would make it. Cheers, Pat! ~Mark from "Character"
This is a song that I will always remember by heart because this song was my first song I heard that I liked thanks for making Hey Soul Sister. Thank you Train From, Ava Marie Anderson
I wonder if any of these kids know who Mr. Mister is. This is much better than if the kids were perfect. I bet everyone of them wouldn't have smiles on their faces like they do here🤘
