Train 470 Stalled On Haver Hill With RCP&E 6428 Leading 4/3/15
Train 470 stalled out in the early morning and the crew coudn't do anything about it but wait for help. Dispatch figured that well the closest unit to 470 would be the Rochester local SOO LINE 4402 a GP38-2 to help push 470 up Haver Hill. The pushed from the behind and 470 crew throttled up and prayed for the best. They started moving and the local uncoupled from the train before making it to the top of Haver Hill.

Those SD-40s and other 645 powered units don't seem to know HOW to quit even when later generation units get overwhelmed and shut down or fail. SD-40 sounded like "Oh HELL NO! You are coming with me!" Love that sound of the old girl at full power, and the clean exhaust tells me she's loving this. "Those newer units have nothing on me." 40 years young and still running like a new locomotive, she's gotten the TLC she needs and now it pays off. That horn sounded just a little triumphant to me.

RICARDO GARCIA Dash 9 was failing and shutting down from my understanding and the KCS unit wasn’t loading at all do the SD40-2 provided most of the work.
@stephenroberts4895
@stephenroberts4895 4 года назад
@@HODMEChannel If you listen carefully, the Dash-9 was loading at first, quit just as the train started to roll, then decided "Oh, I guess we're moving" and spooled back up. It's a shame when the newer engines can't pull their weight and older power has to nearly sacrifice itself to get the job done.

Don't you mean...PULL the train UP the grade it stalled on? I was waiting for it to move to the left,(in the direction of the cars...)& when it broke into movement, it gave the illusion of the bnsf & other engine of literally opposing the helper on the end. I ended up looking for wheel sparks! Wow, talk about dead engine weight!...

Very common spot for wheel slip. Fair amount of trains on this line are underpowered for these hills.

Great video actuallly man. Reminds me of this one Baldwin. Blazer video on tube where this like mile long local cuts off the power and one of the locos takes off down into the yard and leaves a single gp38-2 to get that consist moving up a .3 grade into the yard and somehow he does it but it’s so damn close it’s like this pull it takes some time and skill

@robertf3479
@robertf3479 2 года назад
Yup ... 710s, 645s and earlier 567s. Railroad prime movers (diesel engines) are designed for some of the roughest and nastiest working conditions imaginable. Our Navy discovered that happy fact in the 1930s and began equipping harbor and oceangoing tugs, assault ships and submarines with locomotive prime movers from EMD, ALCO and Fairbanks Morse, and has never regretted the decision. EMD still provides diesels for service in driving diesel generator sets aboard ship as does GE.

Not just mines, and boats. The huge crawler platforms that hauled the Saturn V, Space Shuttles, and soon the new Artemis missions are powered by a pair of ALCO V16 2750hp engines. Almost 57 years old they still pur like kittens. Big kittens.

Notch 8 is full throttle, inorder to stall, the wheel slip monitor senses a wheel slip and kills generator output to the slipping wheels, there is likely an electronic board issue as well

At first I’m like of course it’s stalled the dash 9 and kcs Mac are both offline, or broke down……with the sd40 pulling hard cause in notch 8 it literally sounds like it’s gonna peel your ears off your headpiece 😂here’s another engineer who’s not playing games, he wasn’t worried bout snatching no knuckles either ….this is what this video reminded me of except it’s two of them screaming and watch yet again as some junky GE newer stuff gets em stuck and they gotta call in for EMD OLD SCHOOL POWER, the magic happens around 5:00 min in the video, crank up the volume and listen to the helper set bout to snatch it clean over the state line lol ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lUg-YipimUA.htmlsi=swAfoZBj95CZi5JQ Also good thing thing for the ole faithful GP38-2 huh? 😂😂 and wow those rails look like curly fries 🍟 or a motor cross track when you looking straight down them lol.

So Haver hill is east of Rochester and near Chester right? I know of the hill that the trains have to climb to get out of the Mississippi valley, although I do not know what it is called. I never realized they have to climb such a steep grade going east out of Rochester.
