COME or Recall as some people call it is the single MOST IMPORTANT command you must teach your dog. It's not hard, but there are some common mistakes that you should avoid. The most important is not to let the dog fail. In this video lesson I work with Will and Red his awesome Malinois mix. He is pretty good, but if the dog gets distracted, he won't come back. You'll see the mistake and the remedy in this video.

For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕

As it should be. I see a fair few videos on YT where people hand over their dog to a trainer and pick it back up two weeks later, but IMHO it's way better if the owner knows what to do. If they don't, the dog will just regress back to their old behavior.

Great job per usual. You make it very simple for the “non” handler trainer to understand.

The trainers train the people to teach the dog. Dogs are highly intelligent. People lack knowledge of the various breed or non-breed dogs. They decide by oh it’s so cute,not by studying what each dog needs in it’s life to be properly cared for,kept safe, healthy and life long educated as to what you want of them. Educate yourself 1st about dogs then enjoy the teaching/bonding experience,you’ll be proud of the both of you for what hopefully is a very,very long time. I was so fortunate that all my dogs lived long lives ranging from 14y.o. Up to a few even making 17yrs and 1 dog living to a few months past 18yrs old. All were healthy and passed naturally and peacefully. I don’t believe in making an animal who gave so much love unconditionally suffer for selfish reasons. I know we would not had been so fortunate to be so happy had it not been for the education in all areas both ways. I know in my heart they have all met and are happily playing nicely waiting for me to come back to them. Treat your dog better than you treat yourself.

Whenever my 9 month old GSD is in the yard and becomes distracted (i.e. starts barking at neighbor dog or someone walking down the street), I utilize this as an opportunity to reinforce the "HERE" command. Even, if I am inside the house, she will usually come darting inside to me, at top speed. It's not yet 'perfect' recall; but, impressive, IMO. Since she was a young puppy, I walked or ran AWAY from her, saying "HERE", whenever I wanted her to come to me, and I never chased after her. I took Robert's advice to inspire the dog's prey drive. I experienced some anxious moments, when she was a younger pup, & I had her temporarily off leash, but supervised, at night, in an unfenced backyard, when she unexpectedly, began getting more confident & wandered further, beyond the property line, & she began trotting off. Panicked, I ran into the basement, in an elated voice, "HERE!", and she immediately responded, running, at top speed inside, after me..

Most dogs here are like this but their owners don't even bother to try and teach a recall. Good that the owner is getting help. Thank you.

There was a boxer running loose when I was at the park with my three little dogs. It was perfectly harmless. It just wanted to play, but it would dart out of reach of the owners and me. It ended up darting into the road and got hit. It still kept running. 😢 I have no idea if it was alright when they eventually caught it. That thought terrifies me that it could happen to my dogs.

Hello, need advice. I’ll try to make as short as possible. We have 1year 5 months GSD. We have him since he was 8 weeks old. He was good with dogs, very playful. Not every day but several times a month we were able to meet up with other dogs for walks or playtime. Several months ago he started to having stronger reaction to passing by dogs. Not all dogs owner want to say hi or play so we focus on teaching him to just keep walking. It was easier when he was smaller. Months ago we had 2 accidents when he ran to another dog, one time I was switching something in his leash and did not hold strong. Another time he broke from the cheap leash. Both times he had ran to the dog to play and the dog was very aggressive to him. “Nothing” really happened between them but whenever he sees this dog he is going bananas. It was hard to hold him. We were holding him close and firm when passing the dog. When our GSD got older he started reacting more, on the angry note to some passing by dogs, but it was never that crazy like with the dog above. We were taking training classes together with him last year, my husband and me and he was doing great. In Spring he was at 2 weeks training, they worked on the recall, sit and stay, down and stay. He is doing amazing around the house and backyard, but not so much with the distractions. Trainers never experience any rages or aggressive behavior from him to other dogs. As I mentioned we have a circle of friendly neighborhood dogs and if the time permits, we were meeting for off leash play. All the dogs are well trained and older. Sometimes our than puppy was too much to them so they corrected him. It was going well, until he started being interested in other dogs passing by and one time, he took off to ran to one (Luckly) he (by the miracle) stop half way - one of us had a whistle, he did not react to recall. Since than we stop off leashing him in not safe area. The dog playtime could include 2 up to 8 dogs. He loved it and he sense when we going for it and was very excited. One of the dogs is 3 year old now Husky. It was several times when he was nipping our GSD and ours was backing out. Until one day we met and our GSD started barking loud at husky, and did not back out. Husky back off and that was the end of the nipping, it had happened couple times, GSD saw Husky barked at him loud, and we all went for a walk. Husky became reserved of GSD. This Summer we had a chance to meet up daily for walks. It was up to 4 dogs. Another GSD, and two smaller different breeds. We stop for some off leash play and then do the walk. 2 of the dogs off leash. Our GSD and Husky started fighting 3x and we had to separate them. It looked like ours was starting the fight and look for it so I started having him on the leash all the time. It was different every day. Sometimes he had fun with other dogs and do not care about husky, sometimes it was hard to be around. I was taking him away, different direction, had him sit or down and wait he calms down to approach the group again. There was time when he was tired after half walk and he had not pay attention to husky and we can have them walk by each other. It got better, but some days I had to walk up in front so he does not see husky, otherwise he tried to lounge at him, was excessively barking, trying to get to him. 2 weeks ago his “hate” came back and it is not manageable. When walk away he can calm down, hard to sit / down him. He does not listen. When we near husky, he try to get him, hard to hold him. When we walk away he is still in rage. It has happen 4x when he was already going crazy about the husky, another dog - friendly to him approached us and our GSD was in such rage that it looks like he wants to take it to other - nearby - dog because he cannot get to further standing husky. I managed to pull him away. 2 of the dogs we meet are small and I do not want to risk their wellbeing. When husky is around he is playful and gentle, and many times even lets them jump on him or wrestle. I am very sad about this situation, and it is overwhelming to me. From the side it looks like husky is just passing by, look at him and ours goes completely crazy. This week I decided to stop walking together as after couple weeks improvement it got worse again. I do not want to risk wellbeing of other dogs because they will happen to be around him when he tries to get to husky. I got some advice from longer dog owners, and some were working for a while, some not. Husky owner think we should invite some trainer to the walk and have him estimate our GSD behavior. I am not sure about this. It just hit me recently, if my dog has such a strong reaction to another dog maybe I should not force him to walk by this dog or see him. Another owner said I should teach my dog that he does not have to like husky but needs to behave. But what if this is his nature - some other said shepherds hate Siberian huskies - is this doable? I also heard the opinion they act like that when they… scared, when if husky looks innocent but there is a smell coming from him that he is actually “at war” towards my dog. This is my first dog and I do not have an experience a lot. I do anything for his wellbeing. I hate to see him not being able to play with other dogs, but that group know each other longer and I feel like it is only fair for us not to come anymore. Not sure what another step is. We continue train him around the house, he is well, some errors. But there are no distractions around the house. It is hard to call him when other dogs are around. I am not sure if this is growing up . My cousin have a collie who was excellent with all dogs until one and became hateful to bigger than him dogs after he turned 1. He is fully train, amazing recall, does all kind of tricks but they cannot trust him with bigger dogs. He is 4 and they tried trainer, behaviorist and decided not to approach bigger dogs. I know they are different scenarios, was just thinking sometimes it is not worth to force it. I am also scared he may develop this behavior towards other dog, and I will be not able to stop the fight. Appreciate any advice.

Currently training my German Shepard/Boxer mix. Best dog I’ve had so far. He comes to me when I yell his name and then “Come” but not all the time. I don’t use a lead like this, but would it be smart to use one to help make his recall perfect? I am also teaching this because he will dart down the road if he gets out of the front door. Another thing I am teaching him is the front yard boundary because it’s not fenced in like the back yard. He also gets distracted easily, any tips are welcome please and thank you!

I know this is off topic but I’m really hoping to get an answer because I don’t want to make a mistake. I’m about to get a puppy. I work 6 days on-12 hr shifts, then have 8 off. I’ll have lots of time for pup on days off. My husband is retired and home all the time. So pup won’t be alone or neglected when I’m at work. But if I’m the primary person working with training the pup, will it end up having abandonment or bonding issues from me being gone for a stretch every 8 days?
@LauraBeeDannon
@LauraBeeDannon 2 года назад
The other afult human has to work with the puppy just as much as days off or the poor pup will get confused. He should listen to both of you for safety reasons.

And no offense but most dogs will bond with the make more as they are paxk animals and they know who the "dad" is. No matter how much I worked with our dutchie, once dad got home I was chopped liver. They can sense the alpha male. 😄

That is your mistake, never try to call your dog when there is zero chance of recall. Only recall when you know it is over a 90 percent chance of success. It is a very hard for most people to grasp. Make recall the best thing ever for the dog! When my dogs blow off a recall very rare, it is a learning experience for me not the Dog! As for me I only repeat recall 2 times THAT IS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After that I casually go and get the dog.
