@TheRunExperience I am watching this video for the same reason!! My first 50K in April. Went to the trusty Run Experience RU-vid channel to get tips. I found this channel when I did the Grand Circle Trail Fest in Utah last year 35 miles over 3 days. Your channel really helped out and motivated me! I am lucky to have about 5 miles of steep hills by my house I run so been training that way and I do love running hills.

Thanks for the great tip on running hills. I have a very difficult time walking while I run hills. Like you said, one feels defeated if they walk while running, but your method makes perfect sense! I plan on giving your method a try next time I go running hills, thanks!

I am going to try to run a solo 24 hour run at a park. I plan on just passing the car and getting what I need...maybe run to my favorite restaurant for some food. Goal break 50 miles, but go for whole 8pm to 8pm the next day. I assume the hardest part will be running all night, followed up by Zombie running during the day. I have run a 52k and attempted a 50 miler. Time to get training, but do you have any special items you love during an ultra race?
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 5 лет назад
Hey Martin! Cool goal- definitely going to be a mentally challenging one! We have a number of videos about ultras on the trail, but definitely check out this one from Coach Elizabeth discussing how to handle nutrition on race/goal day --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W3QU19vOXYQ.html

I found this interesting as I've never looked seriously into ultra running (yet). Some of these tips are also useful for me to keep in mind for marathon training runs too. I do have to ask though, is the guy in the background doing all those burpees one of your guys? I know how much the TRE programs love burpees :D
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 лет назад
haha! Actually no! But we did ask him what program he was doing- didn't sound too far off from what we do.
@isaiahroggow7590

good tip. I have been doing ultras for years now, and this is the first time I've heard this bit of advice. On 100M's, I like 15min run, 3min walk, repeat.
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 лет назад
That's a good technique too! This particular tip helps us best on the long hills.

I have a 100 mile event coming up end of April and I was looking for tips on a run/walk strategy. This sounds pretty good, although 3 minute walk does sound quite a long time (probably doesn't 20 miles in to the event maybe!). Couple of questions: Do you practice this on your long runs at all? My long run is up to 27 miles which is nearly all running except the occasional walk for eating. I'm totally aware I couldn't keep this up for another 70 miles though! Do you generally employ this strategy straight away or wait until you're further into the race? Thanks!
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 лет назад
General rule of thumb for this - use it just when you need it. But REMEMBER that this also means needing it in regards to your run form. Be aware if you start to lose your run form and use this strategy to "reset" the hips and hamstrings. Good luck!
@isaiahroggow7590
@isaiahroggow7590 7 лет назад
I do practice it on my long runs. I do back-to-back-to-back long runs on the weekends and by day 3, my legs are pretty thrashed and that's when I do the walk-alt-run stuff.

My question would be, mileage. I am a former college runner so I'm no stranger to higher mileage. However, the ultra marathon training and pace is completely new to me. So what would be an ideal weekly mileage?
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 5 лет назад
Weekly mileage is very personal as every runner- even if they're racing the same distances- can handle a different volume! You can try following a program and pay close attention to how your body is handling mileage and adjust accordingly.

Do we need to start the intervals system at a certain time in the race??? Or just when we feel comfortable doing it when our heart rate is still low???
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 лет назад
Do it when you need to! When you're feeling like you want to stop, try using this to keep moving and HR regulated.

Lee I wondered the same thing! Lol that guys was going at it!I want to an efficient runner and run an ultra so I would like to hear more about that and how to get my hr lower and still be able to run. Aerobic health for long distances.
@TheRunExperience
@TheRunExperience 7 лет назад
Hey Deja! Absolutely. Look out for more ultra videos in the future. As far as lowering your HR goes - strength training (especially for legs - check out our new video that went up today) will help with that, as well as practicing some speed work mixed in between your longer runs. This will all add up to lowering that HR for more sustainable energy during your runs. Good luck!
