good deal your dog looks great and handles very well. It's hard to fix a bad habit and it's my fault I trained him my first bird dog. I thought for his first hunting season id just let him run and get the bird like a fun bumper. thinking it would build good drive and well it did he loves it. but i don't let him break anymore for his safety. just started watching u guys and u inspired me to try filming yard work and hunts I've thought about it for a few years but u guys really gave me motivation. btw no migration in southern ohio.

Thanks for the support. Glad you found us and glad we could inspire you to film. I think you could stop him from breaking in a couple hunts. If it was me I’d just take a real short leash and hold him to where he thinks he’s not tied down but if he tries to break you got him. Tying down might not be bad but I just wonder if he’d depend on it. I think after a few hunts you could stop it

Great vid. My favorite thing about these that is different from the professional kennel's videos is that we get to see the learning curve of the dog and the trainer. Most videos made by professionals only show the drill that the dog is "learning" after the dog somehow already does it perfectly and that just isn't accurate for every day folks. So keep up the good work man.

I have a golden retriever that I’ve trained since he was about 11 weeks old and my Dad is the one who ran into Chris Akin somewhere and recommended I get his dvd and I’ve been using that ever since. If anything at all even if you don’t go duck hunting with a dog it’s such a good tool to use for your pets obedience regardless and my dog Henry is easily the best behaved dog anywhere I go. If dog training was easy everyone would do it love the vids man keep it up anything worth doing requires hard work :)

I have a 13 week lab pup that I am going to be training for waterfowl. I just got done binge watching all of the first video series and cant wait to see how this series ends up. I love watching a dog work and find even more amazing when it was trained by the owner not a professional. Keep it up, thank you for reminding the everyday guy that he can doesn't have to spend thousands of dollars to end up with a good dog.

How did you make out? I've been doing retrieving training with my lab. Started at 3 months and took a break for obedience and starting now again at 9 months for this stuff. First dog for me and I've never duck hunted but like you said, watching him work obedience and the retrieving training has been incredible to see.

I have alot of trouble with mine breaking ONLY while hunting when the gun cracked and the bird was falling he would be gone on his way to get the bird. so I tie him down now. but in the yard he would sit until I said his name. lol id shoot and id say every name I could think of and he would be steady no problem. out hunting live birds big problem. not gun shy loves the gun and the retrieve. did u have this problem
@MidValleyMercenaries
@MidValleyMercenaries 5 лет назад
Not hunting but before we went hunting we went out to river and threw birds, shot, made everything like the real scenario. He tried to break but I had a hold of his short leash so as not to let him do that during “practice”. I used the short leash for the first couple hunts just in case but he never broke, now I don’t use a leash at all. Once they start breaking I’ve heard it’s heard to stop so I didn’t wanna start that habit

Nice Job....I laughed quite awhile back when you were just going to train Rocky to Fetch. Now you won't have to walk him out there when he doesn't see one fall! Glad to see your continuing his training. You can't ever have a dog that is trained too well. That obedience you were talking about is ongoing. You can do that several times a week without even leaving home. That slow, and/or sloppy sit (a dog can have), will come back to haunt you when you start your "T" work. You won't be able to stop it on the mark. They need a quick, crisp sit in place, to make it work. You'll see what I mean soon enough. Also as your casting and stepping when you send him, SLOW Down. At that rate (watch your video), he won't always have locked onto you yet, and at distance, they go off movement too. I'd hold my hand out there for at least a count of 2 and let him focus on it. You will see after awhile, he will key off of that and actually lean in that direction, anticipating your cast. This can be a huge benefit to both of you. First he's not wondering which way your casting him, and you will be able to see if he's got other plans on his mind. Keep up the good work. You've got the bug now! :-)

As always thank you! Taking all to heart. One thing I have learned is how every step is so important, maybe I don’t the why but like you said later I will, so I def want to be perfect. I def have the bug bad...gonna slow down on the hand signals

My son (5) and I have seen every video from day 1. Every day it's a question if there's a new video of Rocky on youtube. We have 2 senior dogs, so once at least 1 pass (i'm expecting one to go this winter), we are going to get a lab. Your videos have been great and I take notes like crazy. Ive got a 6 moth old black labrador. Ive watched all of your videos and have bought Chris Akins DVD's. Im having trouble with my dog not wanting to retrieve? She does good for the first 5 or so. Any after that she stops retrieving. When I switch into going into working on heel, sit and here after one or two stops listening and sits down without moving. Am I doing too much too soon? Our sessions are less than 10 minutes usually.
@MidValleyMercenaries
@MidValleyMercenaries 5 лет назад
Try taking a break from retrieves for a week and come back to it. As far as the heel goes sounds like she’s playing The Who’s boss game. If your sessions are short I’d be making her do it until she learns she has to listen. Rocky tried to play that game as well, it’s at that point you make them.
@exceptionallycool150
@exceptionallycool150 5 лет назад
@@MidValleyMercenaries I can see that being the issue and just did another session and it seemed to go smoother. It took a lot effort. Do you think that this is just the puppy stages or not enough frequency? I try to hit everyday but sometimes I dont.
@MidValleyMercenaries
@MidValleyMercenaries 5 лет назад
Just puppy stage learning dominant figure. Don’t let her control the training. Like you said it’ll take some work but it won’t last long if you take care of it

I was trying to start documenting my training aswell with my dog Mojo But i realized real fast how much time it takes that i dont have. But ive got one more hunting season before i deploy again so i am working hard on getting mojos obedance done so i can start casting and make him ready by next season. He running some blinds now probally out to 80 yards. It's fun and i deffintly share the same felling you do when u say you have the training bug. I shared some of my last video of him training using a winger in facebook messager to your page if you want to check them out. Hey Titus. Just curious if your dog gets confused on a retrieve you use a back retrieve on how do you plan to remote sit him when he's 50 yards out? Mine wasn't perfect at first and still isn't. But I use a single whistle blow for remote sit. So if I was to use that during training for attention he might get confused. What does doken use for remote sit or does he say its ok to single whistle anyway?
@MidValleyMercenaries
@MidValleyMercenaries 5 лет назад
I don’t use dokken. Only use Chris Akin. He does not get confused at all pretty neat to see the process from now to where Chris goes with this. So easy and it’s all building blocks for the next step
@tonygonzales1122
@tonygonzales1122 5 лет назад
@@MidValleyMercenaries I apologize. Chris Akin. I guess what in saying is when your on a REAL ( no bumper) blind retrieve and you send him on a dead bird back depending on how you train him typically they will run out as far as you train. So if you do 20 yards typically he will run out 20 yards and maybe go left or right or look back at you. Let's say get goes left when he's 50 yards out where he cant hear ya so good whats your plan to stop him for further hand signals. When my dog gets off track which they will I will blow my whistle once and shock once for a remote 50 yard remote sit and give him another hand command. What is Mr Akins plan for that? I like the idea of the one whistle attention getter but not sure if that would work for me. Keep the good work up. Just curious and trying to help some. You might want to use single whistle for remote sit. And double whistle for come back. But maybe Atkins plans to merge that into something else.
@MidValleyMercenaries
@MidValleyMercenaries 5 лет назад
It’s all good man. Appreciate it. Getting cart ahead of horse just a little. I’ll explain as videos go along so I’m not repeating. 2 whistles come back. 1 whistle sit. Ball in Whistle stuck on me and made it sound like one. Not intentional
