Training Without Conflict™ Podcast Episode Five: Dr. Doug Lisle & Dr. Jen Howk
In this episode of the Training Without Conflict™ Podcast, Ivan Balabanov interviews two of his biggest inspirations, Dr. Doug Lisle and Dr. Jen Howk.
Dr. Lisle and Dr. Howk are the hosts of the very popular Beat Your Genes Podcast.
Dr. Doug Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego (summa cum laude). He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, where he was awarded the Presidents Fellowship and was a DuPont Scholar. He was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University, and worked on the research staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs at the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Palo Alto, California. His research and clinical interests have broadened to include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, he is currently the Director of Research for the TrueNorth Health Center and also serves as the psychologist for the McDougall Wellness Program, both located in Santa Rosa, California.
Dr. Jen Howk earned her B.A. with honors from the University of Washington, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Her academic research explores how state-society relations shape vulnerability, resilience, and social well-being. Her Ph.D. dissertation, “Too Dysfunctional to Govern: Trauma Capital and State Retreat in Rural Alaska,” explains how claims of historical and ongoing trauma, distress, and vulnerability in communities that lack alternative markers of status and success can become a stable source of social capital that paradoxically reinforces underdevelopment and inequality.
Dr. Lisle and Dr. Howk are now in the process of co-authoring a book based on Dr. Lisle's new method of approaching human psychology and wellbeing. He describes this approach as Esteem Dynamics - its core insights adapted from a revolutionary biological approach to psychology. Central figures having major influence on Dr. Lisle’s thinking include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered academic A-list thinkers in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort - born of Dr. Lisle’s 25-years of clinical experience wedded to the deep insights into human nature now available via evolutionary psychology.

My favorite thus far - this brings to light things that every dog owner, pet or competitor, needs to listen to twice. I’ve told dog owners for years, “get the right dog for the job and stop trying to force a square peg into a round hole to appease your wants and ego”

Thank you Ivan for introducing yet another subtle and very interesting podcast which titillates those interested in dog training as well as those in canine behaviourism; not just to do it better but to have a real understanding of dogs through their evolutionary biology and behavioural genetics. To see dogs truly who they are and how behaviours could be modify without compromising on health and happiness. Training Without Conflict concepts and principles in learning theories is revolutionary in itself! So I am a huge fan of your work. Thank you.

That was an eye-opener! I love your ability to see things from such a broad perspective. To draw parallels between the current (political) issues in dog training and evolutionary psychology. I am convinced that the resistance to the idea of genetic personality/temperament is because when we consider that idea with regard to humans, (1) psychologists would lose a lot of business and (2) everyone's fear of turning out to be just like your father (mother) is too threatening.

Brilliant conversation. Nature vs Nurture. Its absolutely fascinating how genetics dictate in evolution. From the psyche to physical being. I keep racing pigeons. By selectively breeding and removing traits over the course of 100 plus years. We've developed an animal that can race home over extreme distances faced with multitudes of different environmental factors. I'm absolutely fascinated by genetics and biology. I've got a family of birds that goes back to my grandfathers pigeons you can see the physical traits their phenotype and the psychological traits in the birds its genetics the traits haven't changed much in that strain and every now and then they'll throw reds a recessive gene that goes back to a red hen my grandfather had which was a foundation to the family of these birds. excellent podcast.

I love you guys and appreciate all the great information. I am one behavioral trainer that is very open-minded and I see so much more room for excelling if all these (most) trainers would just stop with ego trips we could all learn from one another and we should all be willing to go out of our “comfort zones” to learn all there is to learn on behalf of these dogs all over the world. Egos also keep potentially good trainers from being ok with NOT knowing all there is and accepting the fact that we’re not all “right” all the time. I absolutely love learning from other trainers and teachers because there’s so much great information out there for us to change the dynamics of training. Right now I’m interested in getting into sport training because I love to see how the dogs respond in such a content manner. Love y’all and thanks so much for all the great information!

Cool podcast! Hey Ivan I have a few question. Do you think our genetics as humans affects the way we train? If 2 trainers learn the same training principles will each of them tweak it to fit their personally and place they are in their training journey if they are open to developing themselves? Lastly, can both trainers in this example still be effective trainers using the same core training principles expressed differently? I personally think our personality, level of training and experience as well as the place we are in our journey if open minded is important. I see every other trainer doing things differently. Most of them get results and have various degrees of success as trainers. I found that I had trouble using some of the methods and techniques of others as a trainer myself. I started applying the useful information in my own way to work in harmony with my personality and most of all making it a fun and rewarding experience for the dog. Sorry this is a long comment. I really enjoy the depths of your discussions. Thank you.

I'm in doubt about the part of not pushing someone who doesn't wanna play the piano for example. I feel I could easily give up on things cause I'm lazy and most often would just sit at home. It's like going running or to ther gym. I often feel too tired but once I'm there I like it, and especially afterwards. I was good at ballet as a small kid and liked it a lot, but for some reason I didn't feel like going and my parents just dropped it. I would have needed some pushing. And now as an adult I often give up on things cause I feel I'm not good enough. I basically have too high expectations for myself and if I don't progress fast I feel bad and just want to drop it. However if I would just drop everything I'd end up doing nothing. I have to endure the process of being a beginner.

Yep only northern dogs are allowed in the Iditarod. But the poodles actually didn't do too bad. Racing sled dogs are very interesting. Only dogs bred for performance only, no show lines no pet lines. All about genetic ability and physical conditioning. Many many sled dogs don't know a single command, some do, of course but for most of them knowing commands is not needed. The 1, 2, 3 or 4 dogs in the front are usually trained to speed up, turn right or left, or stop. The rest of the team will follow. There are successful sled dog racers who know very little about dogs or dog training except what directly related to their sport. And also some mushers are real dog people and are on cutting edge of dog world things.

I'm not really buying this, though it is interesting. On the scale of nature vs nurture, these two are on the extreme end of nature. But observation of reality leads one to hypothesize that for humans and high-level animals, it's truly not extreme nature nor extreme nurture, but some combination thereof. Both are important, to some degree. I also fail to believe that if you have a dog scared of stuff, the best thing to do is shield it from scary stuff. Quite the opposite. The best thing to do is desensitize it to scary stuff so it's not scared of everything all the time and can actually live life. I do this all day every day with horses, who are literally scared of their own shadows, and much of what we do with horses goes against their "nature" and we do it extremely successfully and the horses, for all appearances, are happy. So CLEARLY a trainer can change the behavior and emotional response of an animal. Of course there are genetic limitations! But, it's not all genetics and it's not all training. It's a combo of both. You won't find a top level competitor in anything without both. Training can also do wonders for individuals that lack genetic ability, to some degree. A Shetland pony is never going to be a race horse, but could you teach it to run around a track at top speed? Of course you could. The lady made several sweeping assumptions about human behavior, like that nobody would try to raise a sun-loving plant in shade or that nobody would even think to change a cat's behavior or emotional response to stuff. I've thought to do and have done both!! (I was successful with the cats and not with the plants). If a kid doesn't like to practice the piano, then they just shouldn't learn it? No. I don't agree. By that logic, kids shouldn't learn to read, write, or do math either. Especially math. My kids hate doing math, so I should stop pushing them to do it, according to this philosophy? No, I'm not on board. Lastly, they strongly portrayed the message that what they are saying is scientific "fact" and will never be disproven. Yeah, that's not how science works, guys. There are no scientific facts. The highest level is scientific *theory* and it is ALWAYS open to being disproven if new data supports a different conclusion. I wonder what Olympic coaches will say when they find out that their coaching is just a bunch of money-grubbing BS and that if the person has the genetic capability, then they already know it and don't need a coach to push them and when they experience self-doubt it's because they just know their own genetic limitations, and when they get injured before a competition it's because they purposely self-sabotaged to avoid disappointing their parents.
