VIDEO: Following the class 47 tour, we went to spend a late-afternoon session in the setting sun at Haymarket station, featuring ScotRail class 43s, 158s, 170s, 334s and 385s, Avanti West Coast class 390s, LNER class 800s and a Transpennine Express class 802.
Haymarket station was opened by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway in 1842, located in the West End of Edinburgh city centre and served as the original terminus of the line and the headquarters of the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway Company. In 1846, the Haymarket Tunnels and Princes Street Gardens were built to allow services to reach Edinburgh Waverley.
The station changed very little for the longest time, keeping its four-platform configuration until a new bay platform, Platform 0, was built and opened in December 2006. Acting as a platform for trains terminating at Haymarket during engineering works or other incidents, especially during the redevelopment of Edinburgh Waverley station, it seldom sees regular everyday use, save for the odd turnaround to and from Haymarket Depot. Electrification came to Platforms 3 and 4 in 1989, as part of the East Coast Main Line electrification, allowing services to run into Glasgow Central and to access the West Coast Main Line, leading to InterCity running services under their 'Cross Country' label from Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Bournemouth and Brighton.
In May 2012, construction began on redeveloping Haymarket station, including a new station building, footbridge and lifts allowing for step-free access, at a cost of around £25 million. Work was completed by early 2014 and, later that same year, the Edinburgh Tram network opened with Haymarket being one of the stops served.
