A foggy start, but it does clear up and we get to see examples of Class 20, 31, 37, 47, 56, and 91, plus some HST's and a variety of DMU's. Notable workings to watch for are Class 91's with three different formation types(Mk3's with Mk1 Generator Coach, Mk3's with HST DVT, and new Mk4's plus Mk4 DVT); 47016 'Stratford' on Flyash; a blue 47/4 with rake of all First Class stock; and much more. This was filmed over a few short hours on one day sometime during Autumn/Winter 1989.

Amazing that the electrics and HST's are still running.. Main changes from this video is the units and especially the track machine... And of course the Liveries. Great memories Darren. Thanks

Cheers Tony. I've certainly got plenty of footage still to come from Peterborough with better weather and more trains, but this certainly did pack quite a bit of variety in a short visit.

It was quite rare to see a Mk1 Generator Coach from what i recall, with the surrogate HST DVT's being the norm as you say - seeing three different combinations in this short visit was certainly unusual. Thanks.

Fantastic footage again Darren. Seeing the 91 & HST combination was nice going both ways. And plenty of loco's working different kinds of passenger and freight moves as well. That young lad moving up and down in front of the 37's asking for a tone was funny. Superb work mate, very enjoyable :)

I don't remember the 91's running with a generator coach on the mk3's. I always thought that they were with an HST at the southern end. Learn something new everyday. Good video.

A great variety of traction and rolling stock - we almost took for granted then, but can only dream of now! Loved the early footage in fog; shows the advantage of film over stills shots! I loved the 'start up' clag from the 31/4, usually only see that from rarely used locos on the preserved lines now! lol! Thanks for another terrific film

Great shots and sound and history with some never to be repeated scenes - the southbound class 91 on mark 3s with 43 power car the 43 clearly doing a lot more than just providing electric supply the power to weight ratio of a combined class 91 and class 43 must have given super performance

one of your greatest archive movies to date for me Daz, Peterborough was a great place for variety once. Loved this one Daz. :)

Really interesting stuff. I didn't know that the Cl.91 + Mk3 rakes ever used Mk1 Generator vans instead of the usual HST power car.

Thanks very much. Sorry, I didn't fade out the footage now, just stopped it at the time - either ran out of battery or it was the inexperience of youth not filming the whole train :-) LOL

Class 91 pulling Mark 3’s and a Genny coach! That’s a bit of a rarity.

Thanks. The mail DMU's(or DPU's as they were known)were never a huge fleet, but do pop up now and again throughout my 80's & 90's movies. They'd gone by the late 1990's though. The closest thing we have now are the Class 325 Royal Mail EMU's that run weekdays on the WCML, and just on the odd occaision on the ECML - just recently when diverted and dragged by Class 90's in fact.

Absolutely brilliant,just watched it,remember seeing that variety of loco's at peterboro',can recall seeing NSE 47's there like [great eastern,the london evening standard,county of norfolk,etc] also you did get the odd scotrail ic brush down there 47642/491 on the depot,anyway keep them coming !!

You're quite right - BFK 17093 appears behind 89001 as part of the Peterborough commuter rake in one of my other movies :-)

Thanks very much. Peterborough was quite handy for me, where as Warrington wasn't - but i've got a Rugby movie coming up next in which you'll recognise some of the locos and workings from the WCML i bet.

Cheers Steve. Certainly a lot more variety than is on offer now. I thought the lad was very enthusiastic, but he did get some tones - i wonder where he is now.........?

Also - the 91+Mk4 rake is clearly a scratch set - mostly open firsts and buffets! Or was it being used as the Yorkshire Pullman set I wonder, as the HST Pullman sets were a similar formation with several FOs.

The generator coach was 6310 (formerly ADB975325). As you said it was used to supply three-phase ETH supply for loco hauled trains. The white roofed BFK was 17093, tarted up for the posh 'Land Cruise' charter trains (as opposed to the normal charter stock on railtours, or Footex). At this time though, the coach was in the IECX pool, to provide brake accomodation on the ECML commuter shuttles (often hauled by 89001).

Thanks Michael. In one way or another i've been in the railway scene since the late 1970's so have seen quite a few changes - just glad i've got some footage to look back on(and share)of these times.

The Generator Coach would have been required to supply ETS to the Mk3 stock as it wouldn't have been compatable with the Class 91 - normally a surrogate HST DVT would have been used, but i guess they were short of them. The repainted Mk2 coach with white roof would have been part of the InterCity charter fleet about to be formed around this time. Not sure on the white roof, but i recall some stock gained roof decals to make them easily identifiable from the air for filming/security purposes.

Thanks Ian. Yes, that southbound working with the HST DVT powering and the 91 on rear taking power too was quite something. They could do with some of that now when they have problems with a Class 91 or the wires come down - the Class 82 DVT's just being dead weight of course.
@MrDeltic15
@MrDeltic15 11 лет назад
Thanks Keith. Yes, apart from the livery changes the passenger trains are still going on the ECML - the surrogate HST DVT's now with Grand Central(or Network Rail)and 91's still racking up the miles of course.
@MrDeltic15
@MrDeltic15 11 лет назад
Thanks very much. You could indeed see a variety of Class 47 liveries in the 80's & 90's, not just at Peterborough of course but other Midlands locations too. Plenty more footage to come :-)

Great piece of retro footage! It's a shame you edited out the freight stock at the very end... I was counting how many BSI sand hoppers were being hauled by doubleheaded 37's 37211 and 37354.
