The selection finishes with a brief stop at Oxford for a couple of passenger workings and freight. Filmed on 23rd June 1993.

Fabulous shots - such variety of material to film and all the different sounds going on in the background and awesome sound of a Valenta winding itself up - super 47 clag displays

Thanks for shearing your old video tapes Darren, I enjoyed watching but it also makes me feel sad. Mike

Excellent footage. Great to see the 47's on passenger/freight duties and also great to see that things havent changed with regards to the Class 60's on oil tank duties. I have to admit I thought the class 165's were a lot newer before I watched your footage.

Thanks Matthew. Don't wish your life away - enjoy what's around now and then look back on that when you're 20 years older!

Thanks Mike. I know what you mean comparing this era to today - I guess at least I got to see it for real at the time and can look back on it now too.

You're very welcome. It's good to look back at what we had, especially if they were good times - but of course think about what we're filming today will be like in 20 years or so..........

WHAT a nostalgia trip calling at the following stations (in particular!) Starting with the usually delayed 09:33 London Paddington to Manchester Piccadilly (1V09) at 1:45 c/o 47807! The following one c/o 47853 is likely to be 1V19 Dover Western Docks to Liverpool Lime Street at 4:40 having joined the GWML at Acton Bank. Not sure whose at 7:40 behind 47849 (Up / Eastbound IC Cross Country) with no reference to the time but suspect Wolverhampton to London Paddington 1Vxx as 1V58 in opposite direction departed Paddington at 14:06. Finally at 9:50 the 08:18 Manchester Piccadilly to Southampton or 1V32 HST makes a 'pre-reversal' at Reading appearance onto what was Platform 4. Don't forget 6:10 which once carried the 'William Cookworthy' nameplates when allocated to Laira / LA and the DCWW machine 47108 seen at 9:20 from Old Oak Common / OC - I think it had 'GOLDCREST' painted unofficially on it by Tinsley / TI before DCWW at OC got this Class 47 during 1992. Finally can anyone confirm that Nugent House (Thames Water Building) seen in the background at 4:02 has now been demolished? This used to be a major Reading landmark which was completed in 1971!

Was that really 20 years ago? Makes me feel old! Fascinating footage, many thanks. Best regards, Brian.

Thanks Hayden. Some of the 166's in this selection were pretty new, while the 165's had been out a couple of years since displacing the 47's and older DMU's. Getting two Class 60's was a nice bonus even back then!

Thanks Steve. Yep, 20 years ago indeed - and i'll be adding another year to my age tomorrow! Makes you realise how old those Turbos are now, but as you say nice to see locos like Class 60's and Class 59's still working in this area today.

Fantastic again Darren! I wonder if any of the Rover cars at 14:45 still survive!

Thanks very much. I'm sure there's some of those Rovers still around - the one's you get stuck behind on a Sunday afternoon :-)

Thanks Ian. I thought you'd like those Valenta sounds, and you can never have too much Class 47 clag of course :-)

I was there a year later only 15 rode hst from Paddington saw an arc 59 along the way got off at reading rode on one of the brand new 166s to Bedwyn then came back then took a ride of one of the intercity holidaymaker 47s to Banbury then back can remember it was a real good day out to this day and was quite an eye opener for someone that normally just saw overhead electric trains on their local line all the time.

That sounds like a great day out! Reading was quite a change from me living in the Midlands, and in this era there was always plenty to see and a good variety of locos - how things have changed now..........

That 47s with the car train looks really looooong.
@MrDeltic15
@MrDeltic15 7 лет назад
That would've been one of the longer freight trains around back in the day before the likes of the HOBC and 'Water Train' today.
