Decent snowfall came to the Upper Blue Mountains (along with much of the eastern half of NSW and into the southern reaches of Queensland) on the 16th - 17th of July 2015. Train services continued over the Mountains throughout the snowfall, albeit with extensive delays at times, until planned trackwork for the weekend of the 18th - 19th was thrown into disarray by ongoing road closures meaning that the buses that were to replace trains west of Springwood were unable to run beyond Katoomba, forcing a return to limited train services on Saturday and close to normal services on Sunday.
The scenes in this video are:
00:00 - The 19.18 Central to Mount Victoria service, worked by V24, stops at Leura shortly before the snowfall began.
01:59 - G514, BRM002, S317 and 44206 follow closely behind with a completely empty 1845 container to Kelso just as the first wet flakes begin to fall. S317 is carrying its new livery inspired by that of Australian National CLPs.
03:47 - 10 minutes later, CM3302, G513, G511 and BRM001 pass through with CA01 to Clarence Colliery, wet snow falling thicker now.
05:19 - Now at Katoomba, the snow is dry and settling as the 20.18 Central to Lithgow service, worked by V10, makes its stop.
07:04 - 8123 and 8106 roll by with train number 1821.
08:19 - The last Up interurban for the day, the 21.34 Lithgow to Central service, is about 20 minutes late and the two centre carriages of V21 are locked off due to windows having been kicked out.
10:13 - On Friday morning, the 08.18 Central to Lithgow service, worked by V19, is about 20 minutes late arriving into Katoomba, where it would sit for some time before continuing. The light shower now would be the last snow to fall.
10:59 - V24 departs Katoomba with what is probably the 09.25 Lithgow to Central service running a bit over 40 minutes late.
11:31 - The 11.25 Lithgow to Central service, worked by V19, and the 10.18 Central to Lithgow service, worked by V48, are only a few minutes late as the sun comes out and the melt begins.

I was at Blaxland for quite a few years. We occasionally got a cold shower on winter mornings when trains coming down the mountain pulled into the station, melted snow on the roof of the train would come flying off.

Yes, there was a decent fall on Friday and a little again today. In recent years there has tended to be about one decent snowfall per year in the Upper Blue Mountains.

Nice snow. I think just in Canberra have snow? Because when i go there in winter Blue Montains don't have snow.

On average, it only snows a couple of times per year in the Upper Blue Mountains, and snowfall as heavy as in the video doesn't occur every year. I believe Canberra is similar. The Australian Alps are the only area in Australia to have regular, deep snowfalls.

They have more snow on the Blue Mountains than Canberra. Katoomba is over 3000ft above sea level whereas Canberra is only about 2000ft. (I live in Canberra).

Why Is There Freight Trains
@afs5609
@afs5609 4 года назад
The main reason there is freight trains, it is the main western line from Sydney to all points west to Broken Hill, located on the western boarder of the state of New South Wales, it therefore has mixed rail traffic, the line continues via South Australia to Western Australia, it is the main east west line for all interstate freight traffic since 1970, the line also deals with intrastate freight & passenger traffic, as well export coal trains from the western coal fields west of Lithgow.
