"Paekakariki Hill" on New Zealand’s North Island drops to the ocean far below, creating a dramatic coastline of steep cliffs that must have seemed impossible to those early railway pioneers, not to mention the all too common seismic activity that can bring rocks crashing down. Even today this otherwise double track railway is single around the cliffs as it clings to a narrow ledge and threads its way through numerous tunnels built by those early railway men. The line is part of the NIMT (North Island Main Trunk) carrying commuters to and from Wellington in modern electric units as well as longer distance passenger trains to Palmerston North and Auckland. There are also heavy freight trains requiring up to three engines to tackle the steep climb from Paekakariki to Muri and beyond. Paekakariki is home to Steam Incorporated where volunteers lovingly restore Steam and Diesel locomotives along with authentic rolling stock to run special trains to many destinations around North Island, some of which lost their regular passenger trains many years ago. We join one of these specials to Palmerston North, from where it will continued Napier for a special Art Deco event. This video was filmed over five visits, three in glorious sunshine, one on an overcast day and one in torrential rain. I would like say a special thank you to Andrew Gorrie for introducing me to the “Paekakariki Escarpment Track” a footpath that runs high above the railway tracks, offering outstanding views of the railway and coastline, even in the pouring rain.

I am lucky enough to enjoy this one hour journey twice a day five days a week from home to work and return; the best part of my day twice!

It is one of the few commuter trains I have traveled on where people actually enjoyed the view. I can't think of a nicer commute to and from work.

Hi Keith, I bet Lady June appreciates the warmer weather we've had over the last few days, standing on drafty railway station platforms can be a bit chilly. I'm looking forward to seeing the Flying Scotsman on the Bluebell in a day or two. I'm pleased you enjoyed this video compilation, did you notice the carriages on the Capital Connection train were ex British Rail Mk2's?

Hi Anjali, this is one of my favorite locations, my son used to live nearby, even though he has moved to the other end of North Island now, I still like to start my holidays at Wellington and work my way up to Auckland. Kapiti Island can be seen from the train, it is a very special place because they have been able eradicate animals and pests that came in with the settlers, such as cats and stoats, allowing indigenous animals to flourish without these imported predators. Many New Zealand birds lost the ability to fly because with no natural enemies they came down from the trees to live on the ground, European cats must have thought is was Christmas when they arrived in New Zealand. As always it's a pleasure to share my travels with you. Tim.

Great Video Tim, A great mash up of a journey obviously over a number of days, unless you want me to believe you walked the Pukeora to Paekakariki walkway in wind, rain and sun and then got on the Train to Napier! thanks for sharing

G"day Tim. Thanks for getting wet on our behalf. Another very well edited film from yourself. It really makes one wonder how the surveyors ever worked out a route through the mountains as they did. I guess the average speed in that section would be about 25k. The diesel was really belting along, I thought about 100kmh until I saw the cars passing and then reduced it to 80. How lovely of people to plant a flower garden inside the fence next to the track. How unusual, and all credit to them.

Hello Arthur, it rains a lot New Zealand and getting a good soaking goes with the territory, fortunately it was not too cold. Flowers grow everywhere, sometimes it's hard to tell where gardens end an countryside starts, it is also interesting to note that for much of way the railway is not fenced off, doing away with that untidy area that often occurs between the lines and the fence. The trains don't hurry along this stretch of line, giving plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. The surveyors and navvies must have been mountaineers, the line is a real testament to their abilities. Over the years most of the difficult to operate sections of the Wellington to Auckland line have been bye passed, but this stretch remains, as the only real alternative is a very long tunnel through the mountains the railway runs along.

Of the places I have visited, this is one of my favourite locations, beautiful scenery and interesting trains. It has a lot in common with the locations you feature in your videos taken in the French Alps.

Hi, the stretch of line around the cliffs is really spectacular, both to photograph and to ride on. There are two steam preservation organisations, a tramway museum and an outstanding motor museum, all with about 10 miles of each other, not to mention a number of heavy freight trains, as you can probably imagine, this is one of my favourite New Zealand locations.

My old stamping ground. I went with my brother, a locomotive engineer, a few times over this track. As you point out the coast road /rail system is very exposed to tectonic forces and could disappear in a heartbeat. I live in Asia now. Thanks for the sentimental journey.

I love Wellington and the Kapiti coast, if I could persuade my wife to emigrate I would choose to live there. A sunny day, parked up in one of the lookouts on the hill road, overlooking the sea has to be one of the best sights imaginable. I bet you miss it, although Asia can be pretty amazing too.

Hello Heinz, New Zealanders are aware that their country is something special and they look after it. I've been along that walking track a few times now. It's great isn't it. It can be a bit tough if your not fit, but the view's make it worth it. Plus there are some beauty spots for photo's too. Did you make it to that spot between two of the tunnels by the swingbridge?
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 5 лет назад
Hi, I was introduced to the path by a Kiwi train driver/engineer who enjoys taking photographs on his days off. It was very windy and wet the day we walked the path, its scary in places as you look down on the overhead catenary to realise if you slip there is a chance of being electrocuted as well as getting injured on the way down. The views and photo opportunities are awesome. I was staying in the Finns Hotel next to Paekakariki station, I was soaked to the skin when I returned, the young lady working behind the bar asked what I'd been doing, so I told her I'd been extreme trainspotting, she smiled and confessed she knew some of the volunteers at Steam Incorporated. I did make it to the swing bridge "Swing" being a good description. I'd love to do it again on sunny day.
