Of course a pleasure to view trains in action. But, particularly enjoyed your segue about the uncommon quite/calm of the approach to the narrows. I work for a time offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and calm and quite are in short supply, but you try to find them as you can. Cheers, MarkBee

Offshore, huh? Very cool! I come from an oilfield family. I briefly worked on a couple of drilling rigs around Bakersfield and Taft prior to working for the railroad. It was not my cup of tea. Mostly because of shift work. I took a two dollar an hour pay cut to go to work for SP, but the oilfields always fascinated me anyway. Here's the link to a video I made about Oil's journey to your gas tank! Oh Yeah! Thanks for becoming a Patron! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--777AUBKyLU.html

@@MarkClayMcGowan Hey, super good A to Z primer: 'How Oil Gets From The Ground to Your Car'. I work for Chevron in California for 5 years and in New Orleans for 12 years, on the geology side of things. Cheers, Mark

That MOW at 4:52 appears to be part of the conveyor system that runs behind ballast cleaners and undercutters. If you follow that train, you may see that conveyor unload those cars and pile the ballast along the track. AHA! Found it. It is the power unit for Herzog automated conveyor system. The whole train is a system to deliver ballast and unload.

At the end of your this video you mentioned seeing a number of piggy backs. I saw the date was January 2024, I wonder if being winter, a faster method of moving loads east is using the rail with over the road trucks having to deal with snow over mountain passes. At least the train doesn't have to chain up, do you if snow effects train operations?

I don't know, but that's a distinct possibility. I'll try and remember to pay closer attention this coming winter! Thanks for checking it out!

Is that line part of the original transcontinental railroad of the central pacific?
@glennfoster2423
@glennfoster2423 3 месяца назад
No, this line is the original SP line between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
@MarkClayMcGowan
@MarkClayMcGowan 2 месяца назад
No, but it was the second transcon, which runs from San Francisco to New Orleans, which is why the old station signs had the mileage to those cities shown on either side of the station name. When the idea of a transcontinental railroad was first being discussed in the 1850s, then Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, argued for a southern route roughly following the 30th parallel, but once the Civil War started, all discussions stopped, and the northern route was chosen. Surveys of the southern route began in 1872, and through construction and the acquisition of the Texas and New Orleans, the line was completed in 1878.
