Offshore, huh? Very cool! I come from an oilfield family. I briefly worked on a couple of drilling rigs around Bakersfield and Taft prior to working for the railroad. It was not my cup of tea. Mostly because of shift work. I took a two dollar an hour pay cut to go to work for SP, but the oilfields always fascinated me anyway. No, but it was the second transcon, which runs from San Francisco to New Orleans, which is why the old station signs had the mileage to those cities shown on either side of the station name. When the idea of a transcontinental railroad was first being discussed in the 1850s, then Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, argued for a southern route roughly following the 30th parallel, but once the Civil War started, all discussions stopped, and the northern route was chosen. Surveys of the southern route began in 1872, and through construction and the acquisition of the Texas and New Orleans, the line was completed in 1878.
