First and great drive! Remember I mentioned about G4218 Ya'an-Kargilik Expressway (auxiliary of G42 Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway) in China is the longest spur in the world at 1,975.508 kilometers (1,227.524 miles)? Well, many expressway spur in China has lot longer than the Interstate spur in the US and this is because according to China National Highway Network Planning (2013-2030), all the prefecture-level capitals and an absolute majority of counties must connect to the NTHS network, even in those remote areas. This resulted result a lot longer spur route of the expressway in China than the Interstate spur counterpart.

I like how as soon as you crossed into the A40 Quebec border, the Hwy itself curls unexpectedly, the roads suddenly became narrower and the road signs quickly remind you that you’re entering the French province of Canada lol

Remember our family couldn't find our hotel in Montreal in 77. Most complicated highway system

Montreal is, in my opinion, a complicated city to drive around. Especially in the era before GPS. Thanks for the comment.

21:35 for the Quebec border. It looked like a plume of smoke on the right just before that line, too. 😮

There was definitely a big fire somewhere to the south the 417.

This is what I've been waiting for, your new longuest video ever with 37:01. I've been waiting for a long video like this for about 4 months now. Glad it's finally here😀! Me & my family went to Ottawa/Gatineau last summer, in 2022, we visited several museums there & made a bus tour around the city. There are definitely a lot of cool history museums there, like the war history museum. Also, last week marked officially a year since Queen Elizabeth II died & this monday marked 22 years since the tragic events of 9/11 where 2 airplanes got detourned & crashed into the twin towers, which both collapsed about an hour later. This event is still by far the worst plane crash in history with almost 3000 esimated deaths.

Going from Ottawa to Montreal via the TCH, but with a plot twist. I know they're 2 hours apart and if you pay a toll (even though in that time period, tolls were lifted because the Lake of Two Mountains bridge was temporarily closed) going south of the St. Lawrence bypassing the Island before reaching Downtown, it'll take how much additional time than staying the TCH crossing the Lake of Two Mountains directly to the Island of Montreal?

Great filming as always! Highway 417 is the second most boring highway in Eastern Canada second only to the 416. You could literally play a green screen with moving forest trees for 2 hours straight and re-create the entire 417 drive from 17 to A40 😭

Great work on the video! Not the most exciting stretch of highway, but it is a very pleasant ride nonetheless. I have a question for you. You still use a Sony AX-33 right? I have an AX-53 which is quite similiar. What settings do you use to get such great night footage? I filmed an evening freeway tour in Québec City back in June, but it turned out poorly as there was lots of noise as well as flare (for lack of a better term) from the high-mast lighting. I am going back to Québec City in two weeks, so I have another shot at it.
@AsphaltPlanet1
@AsphaltPlanet1 11 месяцев назад
The flare is probably caused from having some oil on your lens. Make sure you film your footage with your lens fully zoomed out. That ensures the greatest amount of light to get in. The other thing is, try to film while there is still some light in the sky. Best of luck with Quebec City

@@AsphaltPlanet1 Thank you. I always film with my lens completely zoomed out as you mentioned. So that’s probably not the issue. I know I probably have to do a better job with the windshield this time, which would probably improve the flare. I was more concerned with the static/noise in the image at times. I’m just hoping there is a way I can reduce that. It’s weird because I didn’t seem to have that problem in my last few night videos. And I should ask, what’s the best way to clean the lens if it is indeed oily?
@AsphaltPlanet1
@AsphaltPlanet1 11 месяцев назад
The noise is likely just from the camera not receiving enough light. Quebec City isn't all that large of a city, so there isn't going to be the same amount of ambient light there as there would be in a larger city like Toronto or Montreal. Atmospheric conditions can also impact footage. It's generally better to film night videos on overcast nights, because the cloud cover will reflect the city lights back down towards the ground, creating more overall light for filming. On a clear night, that light isn't reflected back towards the ground, which means that footage will be darker, and have more noise/grain as a result.

@@AsphaltPlanet1 wow! I find it quite fascinating how science can have an impact on my video quality! It’s true though. When I filmed that footage, it was pretty clear overall. I’m a little disappointed because I happened to capture a pretty nice sunset as I was crossing the Pierre Laporte Bridge and descending the hill! Hopefully I have some better luck this time with it being fall, which means a better chance for overcast conditions. I’m also there two nights this time instead of just one, so that helps! Thanks for your help!

@@AsphaltPlanet1 Speaking of night filming, do you plan to film Cambridge to Mississauga along the 401 at night?

How you were able to cross the provincial border during that time? The border was closed to non essential travel due to COVID!!
@AsphaltPlanet1
@AsphaltPlanet1 11 месяцев назад
The border was closed in Ontario, but as an Ontario plated vehicle, there's not much they could do to stop me from returning home. At the time, they had directed all traffic on the 401 and the 417 to the first travel plaza entering Ontario where an OPP officer waived me through. On a subsequent trip, I just crossed at a concession road, there weren't OPP stationed at the minor crossings. Thanks for the comment.
