Navigating Through Menopause As A Transgender Male - My Complete Hysterectomy Journey: • Living With Menopause:...
In this episode we meet Ryan, a transgender man. Ryan knew his whole life that he was a male in a female body, and luckily, he grew up in a supportive family who have been by his side throughout his journey.
Ryan decided to start his transition with hormones and soon after had a full hysterectomy - uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, the whole thing. It left him with what he describes as ‘an empty room’ in his abdomen, but more importantly, the surgery and hormones put him simultaneously into puberty and into menopause. At age 30.
After his surgery his family came to rally around him. And a few days after they left he found himself on the bathroom floor, suicidal. The crisis line led him to counselling where he finally had it explained to him that the lack of estrogen following his surgery had thrown him into menopause - the depression, the suicidal thoughts, hot flashes, and other symptoms.
With support he has learned to manage his testosterone therapy so that he stays out of menopause. His best advice is to ensure that you have someone checking in on you if you are in a depressive state. He acknowledges that the medical system isn’t focused on menopause and mid-life women so it is necessary to make sure you have a solid support system.
