Good to see you again sir. Years ago (in the late 80s) I worked at a video production facility transferring people’s home movies to VHS - yeah, I’m old - and found that projectors with five bladed shutters was the key to flicker-free transfers. It’s almost surreal seeing this return to the need for transferring film to another media.. but I love it! I’m thinking that as 3D printing improves, and innovative products continue to develop, facilitating quality digital transfers will only improve with time. Happy 5 years!

Just curious if you're ever going to dabble in 35mm motion picture film, like you do in 16mm and 8mm? I know it's probably exponentially more expensive with little to no consumer options, but it'd be interesting to hear your take and comparisons what it's like to work with.

Subbed I don’t have any analog kit but I have always loved the look. Really cool to see how you do all this.

I had gotten the Panasonic HDC-HS9 Hard Drive Camcorder with 3CCD that cuts down the flicker and the and a modified with a microlens Chinon sound 7500 MV super 8mm that has great sound and speed control. Beware of the chopping functions it will not chop onions, but it will make you cry. Because it chop up the film. that why I put about a foot of leader. I use my tripod to use and I use Magix/DaVinci I want to get a jack stand. My parents use to have a Kodak double 8mm playback and record deck, but that was need to be repaired costly. I have been a subscriber to your channel about four years now and enjoy your content.

hey if im not mistaken im pretty sure the rasberry pi camera has a global shutter and is about the same size as super 8 you should try the super 8 one again but with the cine pi

Very inventive! But so complicated..why won’t them make a market-friendly scanner for 16mm film?

Great video, thanks for sharing it Noah! Serious question though - how much worse would the results be if you just pointed a projector at a white surface, while simply shooting it with a dslr + some mild color grading of course? Cheers Fredrik

There is a global shutter camera for the raspberry pi. It’s not full HD and I’m not sure what to do about shutter syncing, but there’s definitely someone out there that does.

Wow nice video Noah! Question: How does sound get put onto film?
@PrebleStreetRecords
@PrebleStreetRecords 7 месяцев назад
It should should be fairly easy to modify this setup to do frame-by-frame. I’m setting up an 8mm projector to do so by adding a stud (just a cut-down sewing pin) to the projector shutter drive shaft that hits a cable release shutter button for my DSLR when the frame is “at rest”. Im using a stepper motor to slow down the drive, but it looks like the speed modification on this Bauer would do the same thing. Doing that would solve a ton of the post-processing issues and get a really good “lab quality” scan.

That brush is badass! Also love the color glass footage you shared. I thought it was some Beatles or Pink Floyd music video. I think the motion blur is to taste. To me, getting some of it smooths it out and the duplicate image (motion blur sample on CC Force Motion Blur on After Effects) on the movement makes it dreamy and without it, it could look more jarring to my eyes, The macro setup does look much better than recording a projection on the wall. To avoid flicker, should the digital camera's shutter speed match? I've never tried to record a projection, I do have a 16mm projector, but I haven't shot 16mm yet. But, I've tried to change shutter speed while recording a tube light and on 24fps, it seems to chill at 1/60.

Great results but still pretty cumbersome and expensive, worth saving some money and trying to get a pre-owned Moviestuff Universal scanner instead imho 😬

Hey Noah! I’ve been following you for a while now. Great content! Let me know if you are interested in a frame-by-frame 16mm scanner. I have been producing them in low quantities during the last few years. My model is based on an old soviet kzk projector and has a wide film gate to get an overscan, a led light, some cool electronics and a nice retro design;)

I have a Blackmagic Production Camera 4K which shoots C-DNG RAW at 4000x2160 (24 or 30 fps), APS-C Canon EF mount, and has a global shutter. Have you heard of anyone using one for transfers? Seems like it would make sense.

At a technical, that's 3-pin DMX (DMX being a protocol).

I think it’s an XLR used for 24v instead of microphone input

@@eriksnel6461 the protocol is called DMX though the cable looks like XLR. Also alot of professional microphones use XLR an an out.

I don't think the ghosting artifacts are a problem of rolling vs global shutter. You are exposing two different frames of film on the same digital frame. The sync from the shutter is not spot on, as you can't precisely match your shutter with the projector. Using a tighter shutter and more fps compared to the projector might help but you'll end up with more duplicate frames.
