Transform Your Tennis Return of Serve In 10 Minutes - Instant Tennis Improvements. The return of serve in tennis is the most important shot after the serve itself. You'll start 50% of all points in singles matches hitting a return of serve, and 25% of all points in doubles. It's a part of the game that many players neglect, but if you master these three elements of the return, you'll become a much better tennis player right away.
Tennis players tend to make these mistakes when trying to return in tennis:
1. Approach the tennis return of serve strokes as the same as a normal forehand or backhand groundstroke. This means they use their normal swings and this causes them to be late more often than not.
2. Using footwork patterns and stances that limit their reach and block them from generating power on the tennis return of serve.
3. Big then small, meaning they have a big backswing but then stop just after the contact point. All of these errors cost players when trying to return, a big swing will make the player hit their return late. Stepping in with a closed stance will limit your reach and block your rotation. Stopping the follow-through will make you push the ball back in play.
To become a more consistent returner in tennis, it's important you master the fundamentals of the tennis return of serve.
This includes:
1. Shortening your backswing, using the trunk to coil and uncoil for power. By using a shorter backswing, you're creating time for yourself and can make contact out in front of your body. A good way to visualize this is to imagine there is a wall or fence behind your body, blocking you from taking the racket behind your body line. This visual will help you to limit the backswing and focus more on the contact zone and follow through.
2. Using the outside leg to load and unload. By loading up on the outside leg, you'll be able to reach much further using a two-step combination and you'll also be creating power from legs and hips.
3. Finish your swing. By focusing on finishing your return of serve swing, you'll be able to produce topspin using a low to high swing and this will make you a more consistent returner. Think small then big, meaning the backswing is small, then the follow-through is big.

It’s been quite a few years already that I have been watching many of your outstanding instructional videos. I’m sure that, like myself, so many viewers must have not only been inspired by your vids to improve their game but also have found that to be a realistic and achievable goal, regardless of their level or how long they may have been playing the game. You and Alex don’t just have a knack for pointing out both the basics and the nuances of the game but also for explaining them so succinctly. Last but not least, I want you to know that most of the time, after watching your videos, I often wished that I could just give you many more than just one ’Like’!! Anyway, thank you very much for playing no small role in inspiring me to keep wanting to improve my game!

Small backswing/big follow through is a great simple message to hold in the mind. I'll focus on this as I try to move closer to the service line on returns. I'm trying to learn to take the ball earlier to cut off the server's angles (and f**k up his timing). But how to handle the dreaded body serve?

at 4.0 NTRP level the most annoying are the second serves that have no pace. They don't jump as high, and being an one-hander is quite complicated to generate lots of top-spin to attack such serves. Even on the forehand, I have troubles adjusting for these balls so that I lift them up and hit a strong return. Would be good to make a video about such scenarios. Thx!

Many players will use the slice on wider or lower balls. However, you can use the slice in many instances to mix up play 👍 it’s a very underrated shot that not many younger players work on. Older players tend to need a slice to pick up the ball All the best Simon

@satgill830
@satgill830 3 года назад
Great video wonderful detail on an area that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. Question, the split step for return of serve you describe would it be the same movement at the baseline for a ball hit hard to a sideline? I realize we wouldn’t cut the angle off but is the movement the same outside leg than other foot comes across?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 года назад
There are many different ways to split step when returning. Some players step into a split, starting further back then going into the split off one leg (Murray style) Agassi would split step on the spot often from a narrow position. Djokovic often uses a double or triple split step. Nadal bounces between both feet then goes into the split. Federer uses a wide variety 👍 We cover this inside our footwork course on the website

Point #2 you make I find is really useful. I have always found going inside out forehand receiving on the ad side that if I just orient the entire body forwards with an aggressive swing that the ball either goes to their feet or cross-court winner. Oddly on these balls I have found them to be sharply precise- that is it ends nearly exactly where I am sub-consciously 'moving'.. In general, It is just moving your body weight from the rear foot to the front and in turn generating forwards momentum. Would you say though the key queue to initiate this in a more reliable manner is to tilt your upper body forwards? Because where the upper body goes the legs tend to follow. As for Point #3 I think the main reason the backswing is instructed to be small is to minimise any time lost in re-positioning behind the baseline but would you agree that a big follow-through means more force on the ball and thus a greater defensive shot from the server?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 года назад
Leaning into the ball is a great visual aid that I use myself and with my students. For the finish, the follow through is crucial in creating the correct swing path of low to high or medium to high, producing topspin. You could reduce that speed but still finish all the way if you want to absorb power or reduce your own power. All the best Simon

would the footwork section be the opposite for left handed players? (open up with right leg and land on left)
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 3 года назад
It would be the same footwork patterns but the strokes would change obviously. So on my forehand return, I’d use right to left, but that would be your backhand return

Very nice info, Great tips. My question for one handed backhand on add court, what grip you decide for a ready preparation? I use forehand grip on duece court. Thank you in advance!

I think waiting in the forehand grip is best 👍 Simon

Hi Simon, do you think the first step landing from the split should be onto the foot you are going to push off from? ie: land on the left to push off for a forehand and the opposite for the backhand? I know this is taught as a more efficient way to move to the direction of the ball. Just wondering on your thoughts for this? Even Novak in your video at 8:04 is doing this. Thanks!

The off split is a more advanced technique, it comes from reading the ball flight mid split. Not easy to do for 90% of players who play the game, elite players do this since they’re so good at reading where the ball is going. If you’re at a high level, for sure you’ll want to get good at it

The return is definitely my worst shot, also due to lack of concentration between points. I hope that trying to implement these advices helps me to stay focused. Unless I accidentally open too much the racquet face resulting in a deep but dull floating ball, my BH slice return often lands near the service line: it's probably because of mistake no. 3, isn't it?

It could also be your body weight not stepping through the return 👍

Can we say stepping during serve return should be the same of Simon's volley stepping ?

Similar, outside leg steps first, load and unload. Different leg motion of course

To be a good tennis coach you must understand tennis to a very high degree, it's best if you can play at a very good level yourself and then start teaching the principles. There is no easy way, years and years of teaching and being a student of the game. The best information you'll get is when you teach players of all ages and abilities and see what works with them. I've been coaching since 2006 and the best coaches are the one's that love the game and love seeing their players improve. Good luck on your journey All the best Simon

This video will allow me to beat my boyfriends horrible backhand serves. I hope. I have some suggestions for videos for 2021. I am a good double player, but at singles I am not that good..... I really have no clue how to approach singles. I feel that every shot has to be a winner, so I mess up a lot. Unnecessary, but I don't know any other strategy. Second, the lob. And third, the backhand volley when you have a two handed backhand. Does these suggestions work for you?

Unfortunately when watching the pros in the example videos they are taking a bigger backswing than described, especially look at Federer’ backhand.

Nice video, but Djokovic does not make a split step first and then to right or left. He split steps rightleft fast or leftright fast. He is in the air as the ball is on the opponent his racket. He can adjust when the ball comes of the racket.
