Transforming the Sony a6600 into a Cinema Rig (RED Komodo Wannabe)

Building out the Sony a6600 into a full cinema rig that bares a small resemblance to the RED Komodo but on a tight budget. Using mostly Smallrig Parts, the Atomos Ninja V, Hollyland Cosmo 600, a v-mount battery and some other key components we build out another awesome compact rig that works great for handheld work, tripod and slider use. It can be quickly broken down and thrown on to a gimbal like the DJI Ronin RS2 using Arca Swiss in no time.

Found a budget Cine lens the TOKINA CINEMA 11-16mm T3.0 for about $525 it's a little older but 1/4 the price, I'm happy with it 😄

yes! Tokina makes the 11-16 and 11-20mm in non cine style versions, (photo stills versions) and they produce the same image pretty much! biggest differences are the gears and lens housing.

Great rig. Just one small point. Running the hdmi to the monitor and then to the transmitter will increase latency. Better practice is to hdmi into the transmitter and then loop out to the monitor. Regards and thanks for such an awesome video.

Yeah, I haven’t had any issue with that, but I’m extra careful to make sure. Safety pins are definitely nice to have if you can find the right gear with them!

The a6600 only Outputs 4:2:0 to the ninja v. But the a7siii does 10bit 4:2:2 external pro res

I know right?! I actually prefer this flip up screen over the new flip out screen on the a7siii. It’s easier to look directly down on and have nicely centered behind the cam instead of off to the side. And it doesn’t get in the way of any cables or ports when your flip it out

@chadwin Wow, I really love this video, I've watched it 3 times now. I just bought a used Sony a6000 camera, so far I love the video quality and photo images. I was using a Canon Vixia HF M30 to record my music videos. Using the Sony is like going from an old black & white tv to having a HD flat screen TV. Best bit of advice was the nicerig cage! So so much better than the smallrig! I now have the ninja v and the rose wood side handle and top handle by small rig and my rig is taking shape. Do you still recommend the base plate with rod combo you use or is there something better? I need a v mount & battery and rods with a focus wheel and Matt box to finish the build. I have a ride shotgun mic and also the new dji mic which I can’t connect to my ninja atm… loved this vid! Any advice I’d appreciate!

yeah, it's a Much better cage option than the Smallrig one. I do still suggest the baseplate if you're gonna be using it with the arca swiss QR on top. sounds like you are well on your way to a great camera rig! take your time--it's expensive to do and you can just build it piece by piece over time.

@@chadwin thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. Just trying to ensure the last bits are right. I’m really unsure on what rod base plate to buy as there are a few out there now. Forget I need another QR plate after that so I can slip the whole rig on and off tripod! Haha it’s quite confusing! Main issue is hooking up the DJI mic to my Nina v. I’ve messaged them about it!

Yes it is! works well with both! you'll still only get 8 bit footage though.

thanks for the wonderful video but i have a question...its it SAFE to connect all your devices on one D-TAP splitter.. my V-mount battery has just one D-TAP slot and i got a splitter to be able to connect other devices .. please advice me

Yes, it’s safe! I have plugged in a ton of different devices to my d-tap splitter. HOWEVER! Do not plug in anything that can’t handle 14.8 volts output. If an accessory require less voltage, make the cable you use down converts it, or the dummy battery down converts it.

Is it safe to run the camera and transmitter off the same battery like that? I've heard doing that with a monitor can fry your HDMI port, is the same true with a transmitter?

yes, you can run both! you do have to be careful. only unplug or plug in the HDMI cable when everything is powered off to avoid shorting things.

I don’t know if a6600 support this. I think is it possible that use dc to USB cable and connect it to the camera so that you can keep real battery inside. And by any chance the v mount battery just died or dropped, the camera can keep running. Just like what I do on my pcc 4k. On the other hand, if it works, this is a hot-swap solution.

Yeah, you can use the micro usb to power the Sony a6000 lineup of cams, but it doesn’t connect well to dtap batteries unless you use a v Mount plate that has the right usb output, which usually they only go to 5V and the camera really needs 8v, so using usb power works best with a power bank. I wish you could leave a battery in tho like on the pocket cams!

Thanks! Sadly no, the only Sony cams with PRO RES RAW right now are a7siii, FX3, FX6, fx9.

Sadly no. It’s still an 8 bit output, even though the Atomos recorders can record in 10 bit.

No. It doesn’t do ProRes Raw. The highest output is ProRes 422

yes! you should be able to do basically the same thing with the a6000. you will of course need a cage that fits the a6000 though.

it's around 5k USD for everything I believe with the camera. but it's not necessary to get all the parts I use. just get what you need for your filming style.

Haha yeah, I do love for my Fuji X-T4 a lot, but the Sony alpha lineup is also awesome. Either way, they can both be rigged out and I have videos on both! 😂 good luck deciding

Sony E-mount has so many good lenses. There's the new Tamron 11-20 f/2.8 and 17-70 f/2.8. Add on 1-2 Sigma primes of your choice and you could do anything. I have an XT4 and I love it especially for 10 bit video. But I love the E-mount lenses more. Fuji lenses are way too overpriced. Probably going to switch to E-mount next year.

😆 😂 for some people it really is just about impressing the client. But for me honestly, it usually does improve my workflow. Sometime it can slow me down if something’s not working right and at the point I just rip it off and keep going.

When Sony releases the Sony a7000 or something like that you can easily swap the cameras out. Rigs are future proof because you can use many cameras with it

I’ve built out a ton of camera, 8bit, 10 bit, 12 bit, 16 bit. There’s something for everyone! I actually love the Sony 8 bit camera still, they have their place, especially for RU-vid videos and quick turnaround projects
