30 or 40 transistors die in reverse biased avalanche breakdown catastrophe. You told me not to put components into a live circuit, and on this occasion, you were right. Also, some clever 1-transistor oscillators :)

Tera Volt Even in the 80s a 2n3906 was an inexpensive transistor. They’re far cheaper today, of course, but even as a teen in the 80s I could easily afford to buy 2n3906 transistors in quantities of 100 without spending much.

In the 80s we could get 30 packs of transistors from Rat Shack for maybe $3. Which was more than they were worth but still not that expensive.

@@1pcfred Breakdown voltage wasn't anywhere near the datasheet value for a 2N2222, for one example. Other characteristics didn't match up often either. I find that I'm doing better with parts salvaged from scrap equipment, though of course the idea of buying a bag of 100 2N3904s at around a penny each has some appeal, too. I don't think I'd want to buy them from China, though. Probably get 'em from Mouser, Digi-Key, one of those places...

After watching this, I had to try it. A few things I discovered: At a voltage of 12 or less, I see a small AC waveform at 60 Hz. Power supply ripple I assume. But when I hit 13 volts, I get an oscillating waveform. As I increased voltage, the frequency increased. At 18 volts, it's about 1.1kHz. It's not quite a saw-tooth waveform. Varying voltage and capacitor values, you can see the rising edge is exponential. But if you have a short rise time, it looks like saw-tooth. The falling edge is much faster. Only one 2N3904 was hurt during this experiment.

Any circuit where a capacitor charges via a resistor, or discharges via a resistor by any significant voltage difference will have an exponential curve.

if you want a linear rise/sawtooth try a constant current supply. Unijunction transistor oscillators are fairly similar to Julian's design. Programable unijunction transistors can be programmed to breakdown at different breakdown voltages. down to about 1V. They do have a bit of reputation for being awkward to set up to oscillate/avoid them latching into conduction. I found it fairly easy to set the programming voltage from between a constant current module across a resistor to ground. and then then feed the timing capacitor from a slightly smaller constant current.

Now for the comment I wanted to post this morning before I stepped in the pile someone left at your door. Thank you for being human enough to show that you don't always get it right. It is encouragement enough for me to stick with it when things get frustrating. As a newbie to Arduino et al my questions to others seem to bring a lot of arrogant contempt. I refer to comments as in here or elsewhere on boards etc. Even tech people at the local used gear and parts shop. So thanks again. I like it when you say play with some electronics you mean it.

That resistor and capacitor are forming the time constant for charging time so if you use 10M it will still oscillate but will produce only a short spike every few second or minute. Not sure if Jullian still have that Tek scope because I no longer watch his videos (kinda boring to me as always because of lacking technicalities) but it would have been nice to see how that oscillation waveform looked like. I know he wouldn't bother what is good and what is just below average type video making. At what voltage this reverse breakdown occurs or what would it be if we change the transistor or what voltage it stops will be your own imagination or experiment if you still need to know. Its just unbelievable that I unsubscribed his channel probably two years back and it still now remains the same quality as before. But yes I can not blame as he has got 160+K subscribers so peoples are enjoying what he is capable to deliver.

The avalanche mode works great but you have to provide a low resistance load in parallel to the transistor CE junction for the capacitor to discharge through.

I have cheap $5 Sinmeter DVM. As there is not beeper inside the DVM, is there any way I can hack it to beep for continuity or resister tests?

The voltage on the emitter ramps up then snaps down. During that snap down action the base is about 0.,7V above the collector.

I did a very amateurish vid on the Esaki oscillator FWIW. If you don't need the LEDs you can use the 2N2222, S9013, BC337 and BC517 transistors with only 9 volts.

Hello Julian, I saw your Monster Bright Solar Garden Light video a long time ago and decided to build one! I ordered the parts to make it, and when I got them in I started assembling everything by your build video!! Everything went fine, that is until I tried to power them up, and the DC to DC converter boards I got literally EXPLODED!! And the kicker to that is I wasn't even running them on full power, I was only running them on a 9 volt battery which SHOULD NOT have made the capacitors pop, BUT in my case they did!! I have since given up on the project, just because I am on a very limited income and can't afford to replace them for normal LED driver units that might work that are more money!! BUT I was wondering if you ever thought about making a video about how to build your own DC to DC converters for a similar board that would work with a 20 watt LED??? Anyhow have a great day and I so enjoy the videos you post!!

Appears to work a lot like a unijunction transistor oscillator. Investigated them as a way of converting the value of a large range variable capacitor into a frequency. The 555s I'd been using previously would work OK for a while then "randomly stop working"... Eventually figured out that reducing the value of the in circuit charged capacitor by 100 would step voltage across the capacitor by 10... And that was zapping the 555s.

That's really neat -- but why would you choose to build them with transistors in the first place, rather than the zeners you are comparing them to (just curious)? (I know that wouldn't have saved them given your capacitor and LED situation) Wouldn't that save you the (maybe non-issue) issue of having a floating gate, and you could drive it from a lower source voltage?

Think your supposed to cut the base off the transistor. Change the 1k for a pot and you'll be able to tune it. Look Mum No Computer has a good video on these oscillators. I think they've got a great sound.

In your astable, the same breakdown effect is happening each time the LEDs change. As one transistor turns on, the end of the capacitor tied to it's collector is pulled to the negative rail. Since, just prior to the transistor turning on, the same said capacitor had a charge across it of the difference of the supply rails (less the Vbe of the other transistor), the base of the transistor that turned off will have it's base now pulled below the negative rail by that amount but the reverse breakdown limits the lowest value that it reaches. Pick around the circuit with an oscilloscope. For what it is worth, when I construct two transistor astable circuits, I always place a 1N4148 diode between the transistor base and the resistor / capacitor junction to prevent reverse biasing the base / emitter junction.

Won't the capacitor trickle charge up to the full 18v once the current through the LED is almost nothing? Or have I misunderstood how diodes work?

I think it is a bad idea to put a 4.7uF across CE of the transistor. You should move the capacitor leg on the Collector to the GND instead. This will allow the energy stored in the capacitor to be discharged through the LED as well, instead of just wasting it. I suggest using smaller capacitance value (and increase the resistance value to maintain the oscillation period) to reduce the stress on the transistor. Alternatively, put a small resistor in series with the transistor to limit the charge dumping current.

Have you had any trouble with those little headphone jack adapter plugs? Just wondering, I had 5 of them, and when I decided to re-use one, it all went to hell. The traces lifted off the board (using my soldering iron set at 245C.) I am still using them, however I rewired them and did not use the traces's at all, but instead ran some solid core copper wire (recoverd telephone inside house wire) from the pins to the 3 exposed connections. This works OK, but I am now searching for a more stable jack. The ones I had were made of pressed paper, and even that is separating. Perhaps they are made for a one time use and I am expecting to much of the little gadgets.

Surely the capacitor is at 18V potential even without the LED in circuit? After all, one plate is connected to Vcc and even if the other plate is floating, it is still at a lower potential than the +ve plate and so 18V would be dumped through the transistor as soon as you put it in circuit. I'm obviously missing something, but what?

Thats a nice oscillator! removing the LED produces a popping sound. I guess its the capacitor in the mixer that rapidly charges to the 18V supply. Your oscillator circuit is in a series configuration which enables you to obtain a ground referenced output signal by moving the 1k resistor to ground. I guess that this configuration wouldn't entirely eliminate the popping, as the current through the resistor would still give you a dc offset on the signal

So I think I might have missed the point, so I wanted to pose this question. Was this an experiment to show what happens when a transistor is operated in avalanche mode or is this a veiled attempt to say that you can "safely" operate a transistor in Avalanche mode? I do realize that there are some transistors designed to operate in this mode, but a 2N3904 is definitely NOT one of them. I'm just kind of wondering.....

On my scope it looks a lot like the output of an oscillator made with a UJT with it's shark fin shape. The waveform coming from the base is similar but has an interesting little blip at the top. It starts oscillating at about 10V and the frequency changes depending on the voltage it's powered from so I guess it's a VCO of sorts. I might try finding an NPN that oscillates at a lower voltage.

Kerry D Wong tried 8 types and wrote it up on his blog - the NPN that oscillated at the lowest voltage was SS9018 @ 8.2V* which would therefore work off one fresh 9V battery. * though it varied between batches. but I think there must be types that oscillate at lower Voltage.

Reminds me of a circuit i think was in 'Elektor', it was the 'fuse destroyer', basically a fuse tester, you put the fuse in, and you can say with certainty that it is blown :D

I’ve said it before, Julian, get a proper lab supply with current limiting! Developing circuits with batteries as a power source is asking for trouble. Mistakes can get expensive very quickly. Current limiting is absolutely essential when experimenting. It wouldn’t have saved your transistors here, but I cringe when I see batteries connected to breadboards. I still can’t get my head around you owning a Keysight scope but no bench PSU! :-)

He has loads of those Ruideng or Minghe CC/CV buck/boost converters, not sure why he's using PP3's instead of anyone of those attached to his solar battery. Even at this time of year, there'd surely be enough power left for that.

I don't have one - I do use a polyfuse when experimenting though and I'm more careful if moderately expensive parts are involved (who cares about one transistor?)... Then again I don't have an oscilloscope either. I've used an Arduino's analog input to graph waveforms in one project.

No one wants to watch a dry lab procedural. Hijinx and banter and down-to-earth mistakes make good videos. Videos $ell. Julian makes circuits with batteries because Uncle Fumble makes circuits with batteries and goes on RU-vid to find out where his idea went wrong. Uncle Fumble doesn't have an oscilloscope, so Julian rarely brings it out.

Its avalanche. If you put a zener in place it will just clamp at its reverse voltage. This oscillate because the avalanche is much higher than vce when switched on.

I think the top three are interacting with each other and the bottom three with each other through the coupling capacitors for the audio output. It may need six resistors and six capacitors instead of two resistors and six capacitors.

@Julian Illet why didn't you use one of these rather than that multimeter tester ? Component tester in your video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sLVcEJYxpLg.html And, regarding the multimeter, shorted collector to emitter ? First test we do And/or open collector/base or emmiter base junctions . With a multimeter these are the important tests. HFE is meant to be used when you have a working transistor. That said, I'm really wondering what the Component Tester in the video I linked would show in its diagram for some of these bad transistors ? Maybe it would give the missing component message ? I was on a facebook page, a while ago, and we were commenting about this tester, and the actual first designer (Before it was jacked by the Chinese and sold on ebay ect) . I'd like to know more about him, and what he might be doing now ? One would need to know if there were any additional words used besides "component tester" .

Funny I was just experimenting with this circuit a couple months ago. I ditched the idea because I could never get it to be stable enough for use in a synthesizer. And it was next to impossible to make it respond to a control voltage. It's a shame because it sounded REALLY nice, especially when multitracked to make layered octaves and chords. I was also wondering how reliable the design would be in the long run......like would the transistor eventually fail or something.

When I got into electronics a year and a bit ago I kept coming across this circuit and everything about it seemed wrong. Especially operating the transistor outside of its recommended conditions. I just stuck with the classic multivibrator.

Julian, put a resistor into the transistor socket E and C holes on your yellow DMM, and you will see much more "hFE" if you apply enough small resistor value. So never believe in such a cheap DMM.

You can probably replace the BJT with a DIAC found in many dimmer circuits. Wonder if it works with an SCR or triac as well..

The christmas before last I built one of those "3D christmas tree" kits from China, and because I was being cheap I got the non-microcontroller one. It uses exactly this sort of oscillator, with the avalanche effect. I think your having to use 18V has to do with the high frequencies you are generating (because you have to lead more power into your capacitor, which is being emptied more often than in my christmas tree kit, which runs on to AA batteries, so it's 3V), but I found out they pulled a fast one and just assumed all LEDs had the same drop voltage, which makes the red LEDs blink nicely while the green and yellow ones just show some kind of dim wavering glow. Anyway, the two-transistor flip-flop you have on the top right is how an oscillator should be built, I'm deeply sceptical to circuits basically abusing component malfunctions.

Actually reason why this works and oscilate is that transistor in this configuration works not like zener diode but like diac. It start conducting on some voltage on capacitor and keep conducting until voltage go down little bit and stop conducting, capacitor is charging up and again, voltage is rising on capacitor, transistor start conducting and so on... With zener diode this will not work, because zener just stay in stable operating point... Actually you can use transistor connected this way instead of diac in tyristor dimmer. There you need current impulse to trigger the gate. Diac is different, you cant use zener diode there instead.

Some Darlingtons will oscillate if you break down the E-B junction with just connections on Emitter and Base. They have a parasitic element in them that makes this happen.

I was taught any circuit with a gain of more than +1 will osc. . . no matter how hard you try to stop it!

@@ihateemael That is only true when you are not trying to build an oscillator. If you try to make one, no amount of gain will cause oscillation.

This circuit could not work without some sort of hysteresis. Wonder if there are some parasitic inductance in your long leads...

It's in the transistor. It stays on as the voltage on the cap drops, to a point.

@@Ellipsis780 So then there must be more going on then the avalanche effect. The avalanche effect has no hysteresis according to the characteristic IV curves.

I see THREE 9v batteries that appear to be in series (the 3rd is to the right of the flashlight). Three x 9v = 27 volts.

appears 1 is just running the 'traditional' transistor oscillator 1x9 = 9... the other 2 are in series 2x9 = 18

Not quite the same frequencies. I hear a bunch of harmonics an beat-effects. As they are parallel I suspect there is also some mixing of frequencies involved.

Eddie - It’s the amount of current that flows when the transistor is reverse biased that kills it. What happens is, the capacitor charges up, as the transistor is not conducting (as it is reverse biased). But at some point, the voltage across the capacitor, which is the same voltage across the transistor, gets to the “break down” voltage of the transistor. The semiconductor junction in the transistor can no longer withstand the voltage. So suddenly it allows a high current to flow. The capacitor then dumps nearly all of the charge on it through the transistor (the transistor having “broken down”, it keeps passing current even when the voltage drops below the break down voltage). This current only stops when the capacitor is nearly empty of charge. If the peak current is too high, it will damage the semiconductor junction, hence killing the transistor. A suitable low value resistor in series between the transistor and the capacitor would have limited to peak current, and thus should have saved the transistor.

Interesting circuit. I wonder if the interconnection through the mixer.would tend to to cause the oscillators to lock together.. Also noted the use of American resistor symbols!

Thanks for sharing experience! :) R.I.P. for killed transistors. They didn't have any chance to live as laboratory mouses and died young, but they may save lots of other transistors in future.. But anyway - all in the name of science. :D

You could had added a resistor limiting the capacitor discharge current. The waveform would change, though, from sawtooth into a scalene triangle (dual slope) shape.
