Transitioning our Golf Fairway to BERMUDA Grass! After a fun spring of chipping off our rye grass fairway, the summer heat has taken its toll, and the fairway got rundown. This weekend, we went in and started the process of transitioning the grass to Bermuda, to sustain the long hot and dry summers. We brought in a large load of topsoil, sand, and compost mix, and top dressed the whole fairway, and then sowed it with Bermuda seed, and rolled it with a yard roller. Hopefully in a few weeks, we are back to chipping to our backyard putting green off great golf course grass! The quest to build a dream golf homestead continues!

Retired greenskeeper back again! Loved the video. Great work with the boys. A trick we used to use for the top soil is to dump a couple wheel barrel piles out around the area and then we dragged the leveling rake right over them with the mower. Had to make a bunch of passes but worked great. We even converted a couple hand leveling rake heads into mower attachments by drilling a couple holes and hooking it up with a chain. Can’t wait to see your Bermuda results!

Thanks! Yeah, next time, I'm definitely going to use the box blade to move it around, and build a drag to pull behind the zero turn. This turned out to be a ton of work and I was absolutely worn out when the weekend was done! Unfortunately, the weather that followed this was extreme heat and zero rain, so it has not taken. I tried watering a few times a day by hand, but with the heat the water would evaporate soon after. I'm going to just wait and go all in again in the spring on growing Rye and then will re evaluate for next summer.

Man these kids are so lucky. I should’ve done this with my land instead of planting pines.

You should consider making a low capacity business out of that! You could probably get some coaching hosted there, maybe even just some people who want to go practice

You might want to screen that soil mix, way too much bark in the mix. It won’t help with smoothness later. Not being mean just trying to help.

Agreed! I likely won't use this mix anymore for the grass because it does have a high bark content. It's great for the garden though. From here out though, I should mainly just be top dressing with sand.

What type of turf did y’all order for your putting surface? Wanting to do an artificial putting green that will give a consistent roll all year round.

Love what you have done with your short game area. Do you know what variety of Bermuda seed you used? Was a hybrid bermuda not an option? Of course they come only in sod and sprigs. Look forward to seeing how it grows in. Great video.

I'll have to check and see what type of Burmuda it is. I didn't kill the native grass, just mowed it low. I figure the native grass will still grow and let us start chipping again faster, but the Bermuda should fill in all the bare spots and likely spread and take over. I'm going to start looking into weed control more seriously so that I can slowly transition this over to just Bermuda in the next year or two, and I'll do a Rye over seed every fall to make it look great every Masters week! Thanks for watching!

@@UnderParAcres That's Maya (Blackjack II) seed. I got the exact same 25 lb bag for my front and backyards.

Please share info on your small tiller; looks like something I can use

It's just an Echo garden tiller. It works great on small tilling jobs! I primarily use it on my garden, but its good if I need to verticut a small part of the yard as well.
