We Built an Authentic Golf Course FAIRWAY in 6 Months! Starting last fall, we started work to build a true golf course fairway around out DIY putting green that we built 2 years ago. We used all of our yard equipment including the Husqvarna zero turn mower, Honda push mower, and the new McLane reel mower that we bought specifically for this job. We also used our yard roller as well as Stihl weed eater and Stihl backpack blower, a landscape rake, garden rake, as well as a new Yard Leveler. After bringing in multiple truck loads of topsoil and sand, we then seeded the fairway in November with rye grass, and over seeded in the spring. We also worked to rebuild our DIY golf bunker that we built last year. We will be working over the coming years to keep improving this, but the dream golf homestead is really coming along well and we are spending a ton of time on our backyard putting green, and now we have a very real fairway to chip off as well.

I'm a greenskeeper at a golf course, have followed this project since the start, been fun to watch!

I appreciate you sharing this and please feel free to reach out if you ever have any tips or suggestions. I grew up a competitive golfer, and worked in college as a caddy at East Lake back in the day, but never worked on the grounds crew so I'm a complete rookie at this! Everything I do is learning through trial and error, but I'm always looking for any advise from the pros! Thanks for following!!

Retired greenskeeper here. Great work spreading the sand and using the reel mower. My biggest tip is that as you perfect the fairway and cut it shorter, you’ll need to invest in a small sprayer tank for behind your mover and study up on performing some sprays using: cyfluthrin (insecticide), chlorothalonil (fungicide), MCPP-p (herbicide), and also turfmark blue to indicate where you have sprayed. I noticed that after performing a few sprays, the grass really begins to exhibit that lush green country club look and fills in nicely. Also grow a nursery field if you have the resources to cut and patch any areas needed! Best of luck!

Thanks for sharing! I watch the channel Lawn Tips a lot and have realized I'll eventually need to learn about the sprays to move to the next level. I've got a 110 gallon boom sprayer for my tractor, which is too much, and a 4 gallon backpack sprayer, which likely isn't enough. I'll probably end up getting a pull behind for the lawnmower/gator at some point because I could use it on the fairway, as well as on my trails. Thanks for following!

The most important factors here, to produce a really good result, is having a huge garden and bucketloads of money...
@Kellen17
@Kellen17 Месяц назад
This is the most realistic look at average results. It takes years to achieve a nice lawn and you show what the average person can expect with effort and a little money. Not everyone can have that perfect content creator lawn in less than one season.

Thanks! I'm counting on this being about a 3 - 4 year project before I get it to where I really want it. I have no experience, so everything I'm doing is learning through research and trial and error! I'm about to start doing more soil sample tests so I can get a better idea of what I need to add.

You can take a 5 gallon bucket of sand and mix rye seed into it. You can use this mixture to put out over the “thinner” areas that you may not be happy with. You can also use the mixture to fill any divots that might be made if you or the kiddos hit a fat shot. Golf courses in the southeast, overseed Bermuda tee boxes with rye in the winter. We would use this sand/rye mix to fill divots on the boxes. It’s nice because you can continue to use the reel mowers and not worry too much about the seed being moved around compared to rotary mowing. Hope this tip helps you some! Your fairway already looks spectacular to be only the first season! Keep up the hard work!!

Fantastic film guys. Your hard work definitely produced an Augusta standard green (well close to anyway!). Looking at the rainfall (when you get it) I would suggest digging a pond to the left of the bunker as the water settles there anyway in that low pain t. It could supply you with water and already makes a great natural shape which would even make the hole more challenging??

With the amount of topsoil, sand, and seed that I've bought, I would imagine it's somewhere in the $500 range overall.

After this year I am not a big fan of topping soil with straw. It actually made it really patchy and harmed parts of the grass.

I won’t do pine straw this fall. I couldn’t get rid of it last year after sprouting. I’m just going to try and water the seed extra this time.

@@UnderParAcres yeah I think thats your best bet for a good result. I did not use the straw, the company that replaced my septic tank did. And it was/ is a pain to get rid of it. And like I said, it made some parts are pretty patchy and bad. Thanks for this little series of you showing us your process, this was my first video and I will be following and watch the rest. thanks

How Is the driving range coming? and have you thought about adding another tee box location somewhere else on the property? If you haven't seen his channel its called spudrungolf and he is a little farther along in his build but I think its cool that he uses the same green for every hole just created 9 different tee boxes.
@UnderParAcres
@UnderParAcres Месяц назад
I'm just about to get back to work on the range, but need a week of warm sunshine for it to dry out enough. I'll have to start from scratch and bush hog it before I can use it and get to work on it though. I love the Spud Run Golf channel and have been following it from when he got started. I don't have the equipment or skill set he has, so I'm not trying to go nearly as big as he is, but I'm trying to build a great backyard practice facility that requires as little maintenance time as possible. I will very likely add a few more tee areas, I'm just not sure if I want to do a grass tee box or synthetic. I really want grass, but it would require regular mowing, and I'm looking to spend as much time practicing and teaching the kids as possible. Thanks for following!!

@@UnderParAcres Where do you get your seed from and what brand because I think we are in the same region as I'm in upstate SC and I am not having any luck with getting seed to fill in. Funny enough I bought a Garmin R10 about 5 days before you posted your video about it and I almost suggested it but I wasn't quick enough.

Let's call it daydream plans...Would love to go a lot bigger at some point and upgrade the turf to something that holds longer shots well. I also want to dig a pond next to the green, and would likely do both projects around the same time. Not in the budget at this point but we can always dream!!

I've been an amateur golfer for 20 years, and the "finished" version at the end still looks better than about 80% of public courses I've played, and even some neglected private courses. Sounds like your peers need to up their game. They did a synthetic green which really kills it for me, but I assume that's because the expense and constant maintenance/watering required for a real green would just not be feasible for them.
