Hi thanks for your support 👍. I hope Tahiti is nice at this time of year 😊 If your question is how to put your car on a jack, I am using car ramps in the video. They are available at car part stores. You don't have to use ramps though, you can just use a car jack, like in this video at 3 minutes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5tKpTfn2p7k.html If you don't have a car jack, just use the jack that comes in your car to change the spare wheel, but make sure you put a jack stand or other support underneath for safety.

Hi Eric. Merry Christmas. I will be doing this on mine over the Christmas break. interestingly I was going to get Ford oil but the Ford spare parts guy said they don't actually have a part number just the specification number and to just get a 75W gear oil. I got some pro gear oil as that's what my mechanic advised. I can take all my old oils to selected supercheap stores up here and they will recycle it. All the best for the rest of Christmas and the New Year.
@Horus_Works
@Horus_Works Год назад
Hey Andrew, Merry Christmas mate. Yeah I have heard mixed stories about oils for this trans. Some swear by the For Oil only, while others say 75W. I can tell you that Burton Power in the UK (who have been building MTX75s and Zetec engines for over a decade) advised me that 75W is what they use. Interestingly, the supercharged minis from the early 2000s use the same gearbox as us, and the recommendation there is also 75W. Not going to die on a hill defending my decision but I can confirm that after 1 year of spirited driving, no issues so far with the trans. Hope that helps and happy holidays mate 👍

Not too sure mate, as my car is petrol. But if it's a manual then the cables have to connect to the top of the gearbox somewhere. Try looking underneath your fuse box and air box. It has to be there 🙂

@@dan_6915 I have a 2004 1.8 16v with the iB5 gearbox,no there is no drain plug Ford say you never have to change the oil for the life of the car.So here is how to change the oil despite of what Ford say.1st locate the plastic cover that covers the gear change cables,remove the cover.Next unclip the gear change cables from the gearbox you will then see one or sometimes two fill plugs,remove the highest plug.You will need some form of a vacuum pump attached to a plastic type hose that will fit inside the fill plug.Next insert your plastic tube into the fill hole and start sucking the oil out with your vacuum pump until empty then fill until oil starts to dribble out of the fill hole,job done. One more critical thing to do,only use FORD GEAR OIL!! using anything else will result in an early gearbox failure. Hope this helps you out.

I too have a 2001 1.6 Focus and a 2002 1.8 Focus. They both have the IB5 transmission and they don't have a drain plug... Strange thing... The user manual says that the transmission oil lasts for life. I have some suspicions about that but i can tell you that my 1.6 has about 370k km on the clock and the 1.8 has about 230k km, both with the factory equipped transmission oil and both are running all right, no transmission problems whatsoever... The swap to mtx75 would be possible only on the 1.8 zetec, wich is practically identical to the 2.0 (except, of course, the bore and stroke), but it would be very costly, since it would be necessary to swap the whole clutch, clutch slave cylinder, gearbox, gearbox mounts, driveshafts and some other bits and pieces... The 1.6 and the 1.4 zetec are quite different from the 1.8/2.0. The block is substantially smaller, the transmission is paired with the engine trough a different gearbox bell (or clutch housing, should I say?), wich doesn't fit the mtx75... It is said (by those who have tried) that the swap would bring better on circuit/track behaviour, since the mtx75 has shorter gears, but the ib5 is a better all-rounder. For example, with the ib5 transmission, you get 100 km/h in second gear @ approx 6700 rot/min, the third gear gets you to 155 km/h... The corresponding values for the mtx75 are lower - that makes the acceleration better. Another interesting fact is that some say that a swap from the 6 speed "getrag" gearbox of the st170 to the mtx75 is beneficial for a track car... I hope my English is good enough to make myself clear. Please excuse my bads.

Had a 1990 civic that took 10W-30 for manual transmission fluid. Had a 1999 Jetta 5 speed manual that 75W-90 was WAY too heavy for. I can't even imagine putting 75W-90 in the MTX75. The Triax DCT Fluid I used is probably a bit heavier than ATF, but it seems to do just fine based on draining the factory fluid.
@Horus_Works
@Horus_Works 3 года назад
Josh I can confirm that 75W90 is definitely what goes in an MTX75. Or at least that's what the Ford factory manual says. I for one can't imagine an oil thin enough for an engine to be okay for a transmission, considering the speeds and pressure the gears are under. But there you go, I guess we've both learnt something new today, and I'm totally okay with that.

Hi Eric. Thank you as always for the great content. Would you recommend changing the transmission fluid on a ford focus with over 150,000 miles? I just purchased it and not sure of servicing history. When careful with the clutch (manual transmission) it shifts beautifully, however if I don’t release the clutch super slowly the transmission does shift hard. I’m thinking it might be low on fluid, but I’ve also read it’s not recommended to change tranny fluid after a lot of miles. Any thoughts?

Me gearbox's been around for 15 years now, clocking in at 90,000 clicks. When the cold hits in winter, she's a bit stubborn to shift until the car warms up. It's a new quirk that popped up this year. Once the car and the gearbox get to the right temperature, all's good, and the shifts are smooth as. Ever come across a similar thing, or know someone who has? I'm thinking of getting the gearbox oil changed soon. (Sadly, not sure if the previous owner ever gave it a oil swap.)

Hello, I have an mk2.5 2010 ford focus with the MTX75 transmission. I've had the car for a year now and a couple of months now I noticed a very faint 'whining' noise especially in third gear and 5th gear, recently it's a bit more 'pronounced' in 5th gear in acceleration and deceleration..I heard that the alternator can whine on acceleration too if it's starting to go bad, I've changed trans fluid 2 times during the year of ownership due to changing driveshafts, could the transmission be whining? is it common? are these mtx75 known for any major problems? any help would be appreciated.
@Horus_Works
@Horus_Works 9 месяцев назад
Hello Jassim, thank you for your comment 🙂 I have not had this issue so I cannot say 100% what the problem is, but these would be my suggestions... If your gearbox is whining only in 3rd or 5th gear, I don't think it will be your alternator. Your alternator would whine in any gear. Also try this: When your car is stationary and in neutral, rev the engine. If the whine gets louder then it's not your gearbox - it's probably the alternator, or the AC converter, the power steering pump, or a pulley. These are items that are attached to your engine via the accessory belt. If your whine is definitely only when the gearbox is in 3rd or 5th gear then yes, probably the gearbox has a problem... The MTX75 transmission is VERY strong... Many can manufacturers used it, and to be honest, the power in the Focus is not enough to break it. For example, his same transmission comes in the supercharged Mini Cooper S, which has a lot more power. But what can happen after many years is that the internal components of the gearbox can wear out, especially if the oil was not changed frequently. Maybe while the driveshafts were replaced, something happened?... It only takes something small to fall in and damage the gears. I'm not sure if this caused the problem but these would be my suggestions. I hope that helps you, and thank you for your comment and for watching! Good luck.

@Horus_Works
@Horus_Works Год назад
Hi, thanks for watching, I think I know what may be causing it. When you open your doors, you will see a metal latch on the body of the car (not the door) that the door lock on the door hooks onto. Inside this metal latch, sits a plastic (black) switch. You should be able to push it inwards with your finger. This plastic switch is what tells the car if your doors are closed... when the door closes, it presses in this switch. If you have a door ajar light, it will most likely be one of these switches that has failed. You will need to replace it and the light should go away. I hope this helps, let us know if you manage to solve the problem 🙂

When the engine is hot, the coolant should start circulating because the thermostat will open. When the coolant circulates, it should bleed out all the air. You will see air bubbles in the coolant reservoir. When the bubbles stop, fill up the coolant reservoir to the full level again if you have to, and put the cap back on. That should be all you need to do to get the air out. But if you have a coolant leak, obviously more air will get into the system, and you will need to repair the leak. Is the plastic hose above yoru radiator broken? If yes, watch this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s-z60YJ0BmY.html About the coolant fans not turning on, from what you have written, I am assuming that either your engine is not getting hot enough for the fans to turn on, or the fans are broken. Check on the water temp gauge on your dash inside the car to see if your car is warming up. If the water temperature gauge is below the middle, you may have a stuck open thermostat. When the engine is warm, the water temperature gauge on your dash should sit in the middle. If it's below the middle, the coolant is not warming up (check or change the thermostat). If it's above the middle, then the engine is not being cooled (check your fan and fan relays) and also change your coolant if it's old. I hope this helps 👍

Evetlrything that you wrote i generaly correct. But it stuck in the midle (temp in dash) . But after 10 mins coolant boils!! But fans not turn on...and on dash temp is on midlle?? Is it resistor on coolant refrig. Or temp sensor of water What you asumes. (Relay and fuse ok) ac runs ok fan ok. Heater in cabine warm blows

1st and 2nd hard when it's cold? The Ford MTX75 often struggles going into 1st and 2nd when it's cold outside (less than 10°c). Opie oils recommend 75w80 which helps as its a thinner oil. Ford now fill the MTX75 with just 75w (even thinner than 75w80 or the original 75w90). 👆 this saved my car from the scrapyard

Thanks for the info mate. We don't get a lot of days under 10 here so the factory spec seems to be holding up well. Good to know about the cold weather options though... 👍

@@fordy1980uk i fixed 90% of the problem. It's still slightly notchy, but almost unnoticeable. The 5 speed MTX75 Ford gearbox needs 2L of oil.... Every last drop from 2x1L bottles. Any 75w GL4 or GL5 should be good to transform going into 1st or 2nd. 75w = thinnest 75w-80 = medium 75w-90 = thicker (this was the factory fill on 5spd Ford gearboxes)

Yes, gearbox oil lasts much longer. But it still should be changed. Some manufacturers say don't touch it - it's for life. This is not accurate.

Very important when purchasing the gear oil for this particular transmission: use GL4 oil and NOT GL5. The newer style oil has friction modifiers that will ruin your clutch. Use GL4 rated gear oil only. Trust me you will feel the difference when you shift. Ford Motorcraft synthetic manual transmission fluid is by far the best fluid for the MTX75. Use it. Yes, it costs more. But it's only 2 bottles and once every few years.

The most critical thing you must do to your gearbox to prolong it's life be it an MTX75 or an iB5 is to use Ford gearbox oil only.Failure to do this results in a not so smooth gear change accompanied by excessive wear.Ford gearbox oil is expensive which is why people tend to use aftermarket oil because it's cheaper.If you intend to keep your car don't use cheaper oil,replacing your gearbox is a lot more expensive than the oil you wished you had used when the box wears out early.
