Good to see new content and hopefully the family is doing better.. My folks are down there now and agree the weather is excellent! I have a feeling, as soon as I get my '38 project done I'll be itching to get at my spit!

Thank you! We are all doing better. Just had a rough few months. Hope that you end up down here this winter so we can meet up!

At least there's no big chips out of your gears. I had that problem. And, of course, an OD is always nice. I have a feeling, even with what you've secretly found, you're going to end up better than you thought...and can probably steal repair parts from that other gearbox. Good video, Steve. Gearboxes suck...make them easy!

Thanks Chris! The more I have dug in the more surprises I have found. I’m almost wondering if I need to adapt the older Spitfire 4 gearbox to accept the OD unit. I need to do some homework.

Before even watching the video, two words, 'mainshaft tip', I could not, for the life of me stop the mainshaft tip from wearing out on my D-type O/D transmission. In the end, I changed it for a transmission with a J-type Overdrive with a bigger mainshaft. No more problems. Now I've got that off my chest, I can watch the video!

Mainshaft on this is pretty good thankfully.

I recommend the use of a magnetic drain plug

It has one. It had quite a mountain of shavings on it.

I’ve rehabbed so many of these with the typical issues. Brit stuff leaks. Period. If you don’t keep replacing the hypoid the bearings will go. Once that occurs the gears are not meshing properly and the shift forks wear out. It’s always the case!

I think that ball and spring were part of the 3-4 selector detent

Yep! You are correct!

You probably already know, but please only use EP90 gear oil, grade GL-4, because the GL-5 will damage the brass synchro rings very quickly.

I have a single rail and a J-type overdrive. Not sure if it's better than the three-rail and the D-type, but it's different.

Not sure to be honest!

Oh. I already know what failed. Happens a lot of Spitfire gearboxes, had it at least 3 times in the past 6 years.

I’ll be leaning on your for advice on how to prevent it then lol.

All that orange silicone gasket maker, oh dear, and I sincerely hope that black sludge in the overdrive is NOT liquid Moly, because that's the fastest way to destroy an overdrive clutch!

It was magnetic, so i suspect it’s just clutch material which makes me worry that the clutch is worn out which is another $300.
