Taryl, in aviation & marine applications we’ve used Loctite 1525607 Aviation Gasket Sealant on shaft & linkage seals that don’t seat snugly in the casing. In your latest situation you’d tip the machine to stop the lube from draining and apply the sealant to both the outside surface of the seal and the mating surface of the transmission case. It’s good stuff when you need to be 100% sure the seal is not going to pop out at 20,000ft or the middle of the bristol bay. Cheers!

Loved it! As a fan of Taryl (and company), Metallica, and Battery, this was a lot of fun. Those guys from Battery were naturals in your skit and I got a good laugh out of it. On a seal like that I use a sealer like Three Bond like what motorcycle engine cases get sealed with. A coat around the outside of the seal. This eases the install and some gets pushed out along the seal to form a bead around the edge of seal and case.

How to fill, put machine on its side, 17:26 pour a bunch in through the axle before you replace the axle seal, turn back over level and wait till it stops dripping, then put seal back in.

Just bought a craftsman zero turn with this trans in it and after 4 months I have this problem. They told me they would warranty the parts but not the labor... They will pay for a $2 pc of rubber but not for someone to put it in.. After I dropped 4 grand on this hunk of rattling scrap metal. I will never buy craftsman again. Thank you for the video HUGE HELP!!

I know how you feel, changed rear-ended fluid on a husky tractor and what a pain. No drain plug either, used a vacuum pump to remove oil and at least manufacturer list how much to put back in. Oh ,did this because once tractor warmed up it slowed down when driving it. Keep dem dare videos coming men.

Jeepers Taryl... on my SCAG, there is both a drain plug, a fill nut, a filter and on the chassis a nice large access hole for the fill nut plug. SCAG designs their mowers for servicing... HUGE difference. Kudos to SCAG... not so much for Ariens. Live and learn. These little details sure make for an enjoyable maintenance experience. Sorry you had this one in the shop. But those guys look like you did good by them.

Made my Sunday! If you buy a Feris mower, you get hydro drive oil tanks that are easy to fill and nice cartridge filters that are easy to change.

Great vid as always taryl, had a commercial bobcat come in the shop with leaking park shaft and control shaft seals, hydrogear wouldn't warranty it. Same situation the seals spun in the housing, I always put a thin coat of silicone on the outside of the seals and hammer them in. Learned that trick back in the 90's on ford escort cam shaft seals, they would spin in the head and leak. Used that trick ever since and had no issue's. A little tip Taryl Dog , I would put silicone around the outside of the seal . It acts as a glue to keep the seal from spinning in the bore and stops the leaking from the outside of the seal .

You can get a hand pump or pneumatic stand up pump and pump all the fluid out of the transmission. Great video!

The "SPARK PLUG THE DOG" video was the first video we watched by TARYL FIXES ALL. The video was how to replace a blown head gasket on a lawnmower. We watched the repair video, laughed our asses off, cranked up the Metallica tunes and changed our lawnmower head gasket. Great video!!!! TARYL is BADASS!!!! And "SPARK PLUG" was an amazing employee....

What a wonderful piece of engineering that baby is. Somebody who claims they can design anything because they have a program sitting in his pajamas in the dining room designed that for Ariens for $250,000 so they could send it to China where there's no manufacturing quality control for Ariens. Gone are the days when an Ariens machine lasted for 30 years. P.S. I forgot- LETS RAAWWKKKK!!! P.P.S. I think dear ol' Dad would have told me to put some of that Permatex non hardening goo on that seal before slappin' er in there. Thanks for Sunday breakfast Taryl!

I would have done whatever it took to remove all the oil from the seal bore,smeared some silicone on the bore and the outside of the new seal before installing it. Obviously the bore was machined oversize.

I LOVE TARYL, and co. but i agree....i wudda put sealer on the bore, and circ. of the seal......i sometimes have to do that on the rears i do (differentials).......often the seals are good on the yoke, but to loose on the housing.......he got it done, but i agree with ur idea!!

Yeah Phil lived in Melbourne for several years with his family. Then the family moved to Toronto Canada. A few years later he joined BATTERY and migrated to the US.

That output seal housing appears to be machined incorrectly for sure! A clogged vent will cause those seals to go quickly....piled up grass and debris need to be removed from the vent area after every use....great repair Taryl!

I have had similar situation with the same scenario on a different machine. I put the silicone sealer on the outer circumference of the seal , then tap into place. Maybe even drift/spike a notch or two in the aluminum housing, so the seal won't spin

a good tip is to run a screw or 2 in the old seal and use pliers or Channel locks to pull it out

Cool skits! Crappy mower design. My 23 year old crappy MTD walmart "tractor" owners manual says to remove rear wheels to lubricate the axles where they enter the trans case. Thing is there's no zerks back there so wtf is that about??!! I oil them with an oil can. Only good thing about that mower is the 12.5hp B&S on it and I installed a new alternator on it after watching your channel!! WooHoooooooo!!

Its just going to leak again. You should use some medium strength loctitte that is oil and gas resistant on the outside edge of that seal. When that shaft turns its going to turn the seal as well. I see this allot on outboard gearcases.

From my understanding Cub Cadet made a transmission for their 2160 called the Autogear Transmission. Instead of running off a hydrostatic drive it runs off multiple clutches which are attached to a 6-speed transmission. I'm curious on how it works and how to diagnose problems with that particular transmission.

Thats a better desgin then the ZT-2800 - ZT-3400's. The brake shaft runs through the lower part of both cases and the oring seals leak. Unfortunately you have to split the case and remove every last internal piece just to get the brake shaft out to access the seal. Not a hard job just time consuming.

Hi Taryl. I took a picture of my seal removers that look like a pigs curly tail. I don't know how to post the pic, but they are very handy when removing seals 😁 Also it seams that a lot of stuff made over the Covid Pandemic, have problems, like they didn't have properly trained people to check spec, or assemble things. It's not just mowers that I've had people comment to me about thing's going wrong during that time. Money's more important than quality 😢 And you ROCK, for your dinner!! 🤘

Buy one with a separate pump and wheel motor system with hydraulic hoses or at least get one with a spin on filter on each transmission.

Love your videos! I have a question concerning my 2004 Ariens rear engine riding mower with a 10hp Brakes and Scrap’em engine. The manual lists the Max Governed Engaged RPM at 3100rpm. I put a tach on it and i measure 3450 rpm at full throttle. Will that cause me any engine problems? I always thought that anything under 3600 is OK? Thanks!

Changing the hydro oil by removing the entire trans axle and draining it (both units) , makes the job costly. Use an oil extractor to suck out as much oil as possible and refill with fresh oil.

@@JM-yx1lm Just FYI you can vacuum out the oil in the Hydro-Gear ZT-2100. I used clear plastic hose attached to a vacuum pump. The hose did go all the way to the bottom of the unit through the fill port on top. Can't comment on any other unit but I successfully removed the oil from both ZT-2100 drives on my mower that way. I certainly do agree that a drain plug and external replaceable filter would be much preferred.

I replaced one last year, with a similar concern, the new seal I installed came out too, so I took it apart again and I had to peen the outer edge of the transmission to keep the seal from coming back out.

The manufacturer does care, but knows the average customer doesn't, and either won't use the machine enough or won't even try to check the level (& then will need to replace the machine). Omitting a dipstick (that won't be used) saves them a few dollars per machine, and ensures another sale.

If that machine was mine, I would have drilled a big hole to make it easier to add oil . Ariens should have made a hole just for that reason. Cheap is all the manufacturer think about

put a screw into the seal to give you something to grab to pull the seal out with. then put sillycone around outside of the seal before you put it in to help seal it. and that oil looked like crap. should have drained both and refilled both. (you _can_ drain them, just not all the oil.) If you do pull each unit to drain and fill there should be a internal filter to clean IIRC.

There's numerous sealants that can fix that & loctite would be an example whether it's master gasket or aviation/marine sealant unless you meant on the shaft itself then a sleeve would be required

We just put a screw through them and pull it it with pliers ( in golf )same deal have to by $$$$ seal kits for a $ seal am. We also sleeve the splines so not to damage new seal. I’ve had to put sealer on the outside surface of seal . Lock tight the green stuff forget what # it is. Engineers got to love them ?????

6:27 The parking pawl on your 6700lb 2018 Ford F150? 1 tooth. The one on your zero turn? 4..... I honed all the replacements on the recalled parking pawls in the transmissions of the 2018 ford f150s that rolled away here in Detroit. 6000 pawls a day. The first ones they had installed were never sent off to be hardened. Thats the rumor here in the D. I also worked at the heat treat facility they never sent those pawls to lol
