Bravo. I was one of the ppl who was very worried you killed that tree. Especially since it was so established and was a favorite of your wife’s. I shook my head many, many times watching you dig it up and then decimate the limbs with the saw. LoL. But you were true to your word that it would be OK and I super appreciate you providing the update. I am always amazed at how much hard work and effort we put into trying to grow trees and keep them alive and then you drive along and see a robust seedling thriving with its roots crammed between two rocks with no sight of soil to feed it. 🤦‍♂️. I hope the tree will be happy in its eventual forever place when it’s moved again. Cheers.

I hope you save the seeds from that cute tree and grow more Japanese maple babies from Shelley’s tree. Unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck growing Japanese maple trees in my Zone 5a landscape. FigBid. But make sure you vet the source. You can do that by becoming a part of some of the fig Facebook groups and getting a feel for good honest people. It takes time but don’t be in a hurry. Also, start with some solid varieties that grow well and fruit in your area. Nothing worse than buying varieties that die to the ground every year and never fruit. Unless you’re going to grow in pots and start them early in a garage. That’s a whole separate ball of wax.

Hello mate. This is good. I've bought two hundred bare root fruit trees this year and only lost one. The longer branches you got there. Could you not do the root pods on them in the spring. I've successfully done some of my Japanese maples and flowering cherries and they took. Good luck mate and all the best 👍

I wouldn’t use wood chips. They attract mold and bacteria and start rotting down. This is good for plants but bad for cuttings. Here’s a video about different mediums that work: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eLXHy4A4-xk.htmlsi=iTAYjgH_0X18qBhZ

@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 7 месяцев назад
I wouldn’t bring them inside. You might get lucky but chances are they’ll either try to leaf out long before the roots come or they’ll just dry out. Bottom heat outdoors and a lot of patience would be your best bet.

I must say, that lovely little maple may not like it when you move it back to where it was. The reason being, that you put it under the trees where there was a great deal of natural mulch and loads of compost. You will be returning it to a place where it does not have that compost to help it grow and compost is its preferred nutrient diet. I'm sure the soil under your big trees is quite dark where the soil near the house looks like it lacks nutrients.

Are they in sealed cups? If so, you can slowly acclimate them to less humidity and eventually get the top cups off. Then give a little fertilizer and get them under fluorescent lights. That should perk them up. Or maybe a well lit window.

2 things: 1: Can we get a follow up video regarding those big Logs you transplanted as cuttings that you suggested turning into Bonsai a couple years back? 2: I saw some videos recently and they could be fake, or they could be real. People were “supposedly” cloning seedless Banana trees from the stem of a banana. I mean… in principal it doesn’t sound completely crazy… it’s not much material to work with, but that is technically a branch that your bundle of bananas was connected to, right? So what if you were to buy a bundle while they were still green, cut off all the bananas but one with most of the stem intact, cut the brown off, disturb the surface a bit, add rooting powder, and plant it with the green banana sticking out of the soil? I don’t know if the chlorophyll in the banana and the moisture in the soil could potentially keep the banana fresh long enough for some roots to form before it completely rots. From the videos I’ve seen, it looked like the new growth came from the same area as the roots, but some of those videos looked pretty convincing. They were straight up rinsing off the roots at one point and they didn’t look detached or anything. I know you like experiments, so maybe it’d make for some interesting content, using a banana as a cutting, lol.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 7 месяцев назад
I've never done and propagation with bananas so I can't really comment on how well it works. It would make an interesting video though and I always love doing different things that aren't mainstream. As far as the "bonsai" logs, they're still growing. I had plans to up pot them, prune and start shaping them, and do an update video last spring. None of that happened. The house consumed me and as you know, the gardening videos fell to the wayside. I do plan to get all this going again and making an update on those plants.

Can someone here tell me if there is a difference in MIDwestern Red Cedar and Eastern Red Cedar? There's someone selling seeds and they only have this Midweatern variety. To me, it seems like the same tree, basically like comparing a kodiak to a grizzly. Nothing like the Western Red Cedar. I'm just wondering if this tree will handle a warmer zone like the Eastern Red Cedar does.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 8 месяцев назад
Western Red Cedar and Eastern Red Cedar are 2 different species of plants. There is no Midwestern red cedar, as far as I know. Most of the red cedar in the midwest is eastern red cedar. Western red cedar is actually not a true cedar, but a "Thuja". Eastern red cedar is from the "Juniper" family. And don't get me started on eastern "white" cedar. That is also a "Thuja", hahaha. To answer your question, western red cedar will grow in zone 5-9. They like cool and wet environments. They can handle our summer temps that occasionally touch in the 100 degree range (but only for a few days), but generally hang out in the 80's and 90's. When the temps get too hot and dry, they start "flagging" They tend to grow better in soil that holds a lot of water around here. Eastern red cedar can handle more extreme cold, zones 2-9, and can handle dry weather better. I love western red cedar. They grow all over in western Washington state and are revered here. The natives here used them for everything from building materials to medicine. In my opinion, it's always worth a shot trying to grow them in your area and I'm sure you'll have some success. If your project is time consuming (years), and the outcome must be successful, then I would find something native to your area. Hope that helps.
@wheelmanstan

@@MikeKincaid79 Thanks for such an in depth response. Yeah, it's kinda funny they call it midwestern cedar. Eastern Red Cedar..they're incredibly strong. I have two alive that faced incredible odds. The heat and drought they can handle without even being established or cared for is unreal. Yeah I've grown all kinds of trees from seed and tried all kinds of things..even all the large redwoods, Dawn Redwoods are pretty great and Gold Rush Dawns could probably bring in a lot of money, although they're deciduous. The heat gets so crazy here these past few years and the soil is so compact with humidity as well that even Murray Cypress and Afghan Pine couldn't make it. I've got some Aleppo Pine and Arizona cypress that might have a chance though. I'm really liking the Arizona cypress, it's just too bad it's not a long-living tree. I'm growing some Eastern Red Cedar, Aleppo, Bald Cypress, Eastern Redbud, Cedar Elm now. I might try some American Elderberry, but have had terrible luck growing it. Oh and Red Maple is a pretty impressive tree. I won't give up on trying to grow my past failings, I'll try to find some work-arounds, amendments and mulch, timing, location..and a giant earth auger. haha
