Just for anybody who is digging multiple plants and who cares about keeping the colors or varieties straight...I've learned from dividing daylilies that it's good to have labels pre-written and I'd recommend a separate labelled pot for each variety to get tossed into because once they are out of the ground they all look alike, and when working hard in the heat I've had my brain melt and in two seconds I've forgotten what is what. I've seen trimmed daylily divisions kept alive in the shade for a couple of days in tinfoil roasting pans with water to keep the roots moist if you need to hold them before replanting. We usually would trim the leaves to several inches long. For selling daylily fans we used Slip'n Lock loop labels around their necks that we had written the names on with a Sharpie. I've tried a lot of plant markers over the years but I found some discarded mini aluminum blinds that have lasted the longest. I used a Sharpie to write on them. :)

Definitely one of my favorite garden “chores”-- dividing perennials for more plants! From about 20 hosta at my daughter’s to over 150 in the last 5 years😀❤️

I found this video very helpful, as I always worried about transplanting & dividing outside of the "perfect" window of early spring & fall. I am also zone 5, or maybe 6 now-South Bend, Indiana. Thanks for giving me courage. ❤

Thanks so much!!! I’m actually in Northern IL too (Sycamore/DeKalb area) and I’m so green with landscaping. I’m in process of rehabbing our multi acre property that was professionally landscaped in the 90s but has lost its luster. This video is perfect because I’ve been digging up unwanted items that self seeded and need to split and relocate some plants. I’ve learned so much from your channel already! Thank you for all you share!

Now I have the confidence to dig a hosta. I have a variegated one that has reverted to all green on one side, I will now be able to separate and discard the unwanted section.

Yep, love those free plants. Your unknown hosta by your patio might be a June hosta, Michelle. One of my favorites l

I’m going to transplant some geraniums tomorrow. They have their pretty little pink flowers on them right now but they need to be moved. Wish me luck! This video came right on time!! 😊♥️

Well done. Did your lungwort “faint” after transplantation and division? Mine has in the past but after a week or so it perked up again.
@gardeningTLC
@gardeningTLC 2 месяца назад
Yes..it is still in the pot....rained all last night so it looked a little bit perkier this morning...."love the phrase...it fainted" lol..good comparison

Your elderberry bushes are beautiful! I just planted lemony lace in a new bed. I live the black one too but fear it getting too large for the space….Can it be kept about the size of yours by pruning in the spring or fall?

Yes

Prune in late spring after blooming. I just pruned mine. If you wait until the fall, you might prune off much of the next spring’s blooms. I love both the Black Lace and Lemony Lace Elderberry. They remind me in a way of Japanese Maples.👍

I got a question if you can help , here in Kentucky was zone 6 now saying in zone 7 , I still buy for zone 6 , we are having problems with chipmunks digging in flower beds , I trying to take care of the problem, I put in 2 new shurbs this spring , Nindina and a Azalea bush , puts some some plants , I put chicken wire in there and up to a good distance from the trunk of those plant than , I went to Lowes and got some smaller stones , 35 , to place in there , as having to step in there I was afraid I fall at 72 , we had some to gravel put in drive way 2 weeks ago , so I put that in between the rocks , were it at the top, what I need to know after I know there is no longer a chipmunks problem there , do I need to dig up those 2 shurbs to see of they damaged those roots ,, or left tunnels running under them ,if I need to do this do it now as we ate hitting in the 90 now or wait till fall, OR JUST LEAVE THEM ALONE , SORRY THIS IS SO LONG , I Google what to do and not found anything
