So I was actually an extra in this movie and the amount of times I had to hear all those songs was insane haha. But I will say that Josh Hartnett is a super nice guy always cracking jokes, super positive vibes and even acknowledging us extras which he didn’t have to do especially since we were filming some of these scenes at 6 am. Really set an example of how an actor should be on set, and watching M night direct up close in person was super fascinating.

Having just watched his Vanity Fair interview, Josh really gives off a humble and grateful persona that hasn’t taken his career for granted. It was kinda sad when he vanished for a bit following the end of “Penny Dreadful”, but then seeing him in “Oppenheimer” last year was pretty exciting & now he’s got a leading role again is nice to see. He’s truly underrated as a performer

I still think him telling the pop star he was the serial killer was beyond stupid. Yes, I know there was a police officer outside that would have questioned him, but this dude has already talked to and walked past multiple cops and FBI agents, and no one even stopped him. He had a better chance of just going out the exit and being questioned by the cops than literally just telling the pop star he was the serial killer. He was pretty much in the clear up until his dumbass straight up told her he was the killer.

That bothered me too. Plus it's October. So even if it started early, it was clearly a long concert. At the very least, it would be almost dusk when they got out. And I don't exactly consider it a nitpick. A lot of issues with the movie standing alone /could/ be a nitpick, but like Cody said, when they keep piling up, at some point that becomes the movie.

I’m so with you on this one. The logic and dialogue in order to move the plot forward is ridiculous. How did lady raven leave her concert with no security with a killer on the loose?! LOL. She was great in terms of a singer but her acting was not good enough to carry part of this film lol. Those cops didn’t see that he took a part of that bike of? Really frustrating because the premise and the trailers were great!

@cowgrll

I’ve been to many pop, rock, and r&b concerts and it’s definitely weird for a bunch of people to be waking around during the main act’s performance. It’s also weird for the main act to have intermissions during their own set. They’ll play for at least an hour straight and the only “break” would be a few minutes before they come back out for the encore performance. If Lady Raven had multiple openers and people were walking around/out of their seats during those performances and the intermissions in between each opening act, that’s totally valid. I like to see the openers, but I’ve definitely seen largely empty sections in a venue while an opener is performing.

Things that went through my mind while watching the movie: 1) T-Shirt Guy never realized his badge was missing? 2) Security cameras never saw JH push that chick down the stairs? NO ONE saw him approach then she falls & put two and two together?? 3) How and when did he get behind the counter to put the bottles in the fryer? Because before they blow, JH is still next to the line & awkwardly away from access to the fryer. 4) WHY WOULD YOU JUST STARE AT SOMETHING THAT'S ABOUT TO BLOW?? (Audibly laughed at this scene) 5) Why have Lady Raven talk about how her dad left at a young age, then later have her say she feels weirdly connected to JH's daughter, IF YOU'RE NOT GUNNA REVEAL HIM TO BE HER DAD? 6) Why in the blue hell would anyone say to a stranger, "I'm her uncle. Her mom's brother." WHO CARES 7) LR's IG Live audience was that savvy where they found that safe house *snaps fingers* like that? 8) No one heard the guy crying for help when JH pulled up the camera footage on his phone? 9) No one crowding around that Limo noticed JH changing and then exiting the limo? 10) The family never noticed JH building either of the secret tunnels in their house (iirc there was the decoy one to the neighbor's yard from the pantry, and then the other one from the closet under the stairs)? 11) None of the cops noticed that the closet door under the stairs was wide open? 12) The cops on the roof didn't notice the walkie talkie on his back pocket? 13) When he withstood the tasings and got the cop to the ground, I thought we were about to be shown that this was a continuation to the Unbreakable trilogy, and I got equally intrigued & pissed. 14) I laughed when they showed the guy getting yanked into the van like a cartoon character. 15) This movie was literally just "look how much a seemingly ordinary looking White man can get away with" times 1000

I liked #15, if it was suggested that the reason he got away with everything all the time is because he was unsuspecting as a good-looking and polite white guy, that would have given the movie a real satirical bite. The two comparisons that come to mind are Get Out the end of American Psycho. You could even have him be someone important - like an actor or a politician - and it would really drive the point home thar we all have preconceived notions about certain "types" of people, whether they deserve it or not.

Shyamalan is the king of cool concept, bad execution. As messed up as it may seem to say, I just wish he would come up with concepts and let others direct. It's been dud after dud after dud with him to the point where I'm shocked that he's still able to fund and direct moderately high-profile movies. I guess even though he has one of the worst track records in regards to movie reviews, he still is profitable. I thought his career was done after directing the last airbender, but here he is 14 years later still making 3.

I 100% agree that movies should be viewed through the lens of having never seen a trailer. I also thought it was odd to reveal he has someone in his basement first. Most older movies that I watched growing up, I saw in the context of having never seen a trailer. Something you didn’t point out but I also found very disappointing is that Cooper never actually kills anyone in this movie. Like it didn’t NEED to happen, but when this movie is trying to consistently raise the stakes and our main character is known for being a murderer I expected it.
@cyberpunkcentral8500
@cyberpunkcentral8500 28 дней назад
He never felt like a Villain, or like a true psychopath, or like anyone capable of committing the heinous acts were asked to believe he did as “the Butcher.” I agree, showing a real kill, would’ve sold the concept of “handsome, successful family man is secretly a serial killer” better. I mean, sure, you have people like Dennis Radner/BTK. But that dude looked creepy as hell and people who worked with him commented often how “off” and intimidating he seemed before he was caught. He’s an outlier, but even him you can buy being the IRL killer he truly was before you can swallow Hatnett’s character skinning women and men in his off time, in between hugging his daughter and fighting fires, I suppose. I never, therefore, really believed the premise or bought into “the Butcher”/wholesome Dad character, so it was just one more phony thing making this awkward film (which DID have potential) not enjoyable.
@Circurose
@Circurose Месяц назад
It would be a slightly better movie with by adding some TENSIONS. The movie is like a heist movie or Mission Impossible without the struggles. Very slight revision 1. The movie never shows what Cooper looked at on the phone. Just him smiling. This is already more intriguing. 2. Cooper never talks to the shirt seller. He just deducted the number of cops and people questioned that this concert was a trap. 3. Never make it clear that Cooper was the serial killer. SInce there are other criminals getting caught in the concert, keep it vague that he might just be another criminal. 4. Cooper was almost caught on the roof because he had no ID. He later killed the cops and concealed their bodies. You know, actually showing that he is a brutal serial killer??? 5. ACTUALLY SHOW THE MURDERS SO WE SEE HOW DIFFERENT HE IS TO THE GOOD CRINGE DAD PERSONA.

I think it would've been better if, during the scene where the wife is at home alone, its revealed that she was a part of the butcher murders and helped him, and she pins all the blame on him because the police are already suspicious of him. I think it would've been a cool twist if the movie ends with her getting away with her part in the murders because the police thought it was one guy. Also it would make the film like 10 minutes shorter lmao

They could have ended the movie when the FBI surrounded his house and discovered he escaped through a tunnel that led into the neighbour's yard. Could have opened it up for some kind of sequel or something. As someone works in touring/live event scene, a lot of the points you say at concerts are correct. Its rare to see hundreds of people walking around during a show where the headliner is performing. You see more fans walking around the venue during openers and set changes... No trap doors or guest appearances from a secret space without security being around. A merch manage MAY let a fan into a backstage/employee area depending on their credential access but it wouldnt be happening unless it is approved by a higher authority like a Tour Manager Even with the above, I feel like nothing is impossible at a concert.... Roadies have the craziest stories. Fans can get crazy. Excited to see this movie. My curiousity is so high.

Ok so something bugged me most in a movie filled with insanely unbelievable instances….who leaves a concert so many times like that’s normal? Maybe I’m crazy but once the main act starts performing, that’s like getting up multiple times during a movie BUT WORSE. Because it’s way bigger, way further walks to get merch/food/bathroom PLUS you run the risk of missing your favorite song easily because songs (especially todays) are like 4 minutes MAX

I disliked this movie as well, but there's clearly a point in Lady Raven's speech about "letting go": it implies that if Hartnett's character had forgiven his mother, he would not have become a serial killer (or would have stopped the murders at some point). Instead of forgiving and letting go, Hartnett's character allowed the demons (of the past) dominate his soul.

Two things not mentioned in this video - When Cooper and the merchant guy were in the backroom area getting more shirts, and Cooper managed to take the mechant's security card. Did he not notice the card missing later? Also in the same area, Cooper asked the merchant what the security word is and actually told him. Why did no alarm bells go off there?

Working at a movie theatre, that would be a huge red flag. I’ve had one or two ask a weird question like that and I gave a look that was like “what?” and asked why they wanted to know. Thankfully nothing bad happened, but we have to on guard at times

I saw bad bunny who’s relatively a big artist and I will say this movie 100% captured every aspect of what it’s actually like being at a concert. There are tons of people everywhere. You easily make friends with people next to you if they aren’t weirdos. There’s usually those t shirt stands every 10 sections so it’s relatively easy to talk to the ppl who work behind handing out shirts I once asked for a bag because I wanted to put my jacket in it etc and literally walked up just like the dad did in the movie. That was probably the only part of the movie that I found realistic lol 11:34

Cody,you are so right. This movie has so many plot holes and so many scenes and circumstances that make no sense. You've spent almost 1.5 hours reviewing this movie and I think there's still a few you missed, there's so many it's comical. Very interesting premise but terrible execution of it. I'm surprised that such a talented person as M Knight is, that the writing of this script was so bad. Very little of this movie makes ay sense. Thanks for the rant, it deserves it!

I’ve been to a few pop and rock concerts & there are actually some breaks about halfway through the show similar to an orchestra, play/musical or opera’s intermission. It’s kinda nice if you are able to wait that long to get your bathroom break or some merch, but I don’t know if it’s super commonplace. I enjoyed the shorter review and a lot of your criticisms were the same issues I had as well. I actually even had to take a bathroom break near the end (stupid me got a large soda 😂) & thought “if I miss the end of the movie I can make up for it sometime”, but when I came back that’s when I found out it was only ending #1 & it confused me. It didn’t take me long to roll the eyes despite enjoying the intimidating scene with Josh Hartnett and Allison Pill where he’s freaking her out and about ready to off her for setting him up.

to me i saw the forgiveness part as way to highlight the innocence and humanity of riley juxtaposed to her fathers internal anger, which we found out stems from a childhood where he was "punished a lot" I think the parallel that m night is demonstrating is of humanity vs monstrosity and how we as people possess both but try to keep them separate. and btw the Chekov gun in the movie is the phone. it can "go off" and kill spencer but instead lady raven frees him, which provides the same catharsis if it went off....for me.

Hey Cody, on the question you asked about people walking around during the shows I’ve been to a lot of popular rap shows as well as popular pop shows along with my consumption of rock and I can definitely say that at the pop and rap shows the line for the shirts was never short. There is always people walking around. The food Lines are always always long. It just seems like there’s way more people walking. Whilst when I go to rock shows, I very rarely see that the only time I have was at a Smashing Pumpkins concert at American Airlines Center in Dallas, where a lot of people were walking when I got up to get a refill. Not sure the exact reason why this is a difference though between the two groups because am my opinion if you spend a lot of money to see the band, you’re gonna want to see the band not walk around.

Just finally watched it today. Like you said, I like the concept and it could have been a hell of a lot better! There were a lot of those convenient moments I gave a pass to (him pushing the lady down the stairs and no one in the packed place noticed) but the limo scene was where I drew a line! Oh well, M Night's last few movies were up and down for me, so I imagine his next movie will be great. Hopefully

I agree with you in that I also did not understand why he just straight up told Lady Raven that he was the killer. Why not use the daughter’s “leukemia” as an excuse to get her to drive them out of there legitimately under the guise that it would be one more cool experience for her. The way people in this movie just acquiesce to all of this dude’s requests, it probably would’ve worked lmao.

I think it's one of those movies where at first glance you think it's just going to be a regular indie horror film but you then realize its more than that and actually makes a social commentary about how we often times put our online fantasies above our real relationships. Do a review on that.

The fact that fbi would use a a concert(full of kids and families,20000 or maybe 30000 people,that will be in tremendous danger) as a trap for catch a serial killer and the only thing they know about him for sure is that he had 16 kills and dismemberments confirmed and a ticket for that concert(the profile part can not be 100%accurate, and they also have no idea how he looks like),it's just totally nonsense. That could have made sense if the police found the ticket when the concert was already started and they has the choice to interrupt the concert or set a trap. I was so hyped (as always with m.night) but also worried that he could go full illogical and ruin a great idea . Shamalan should put his ideas on the table and let other writers set up the plot.

The very premise of this stupid movie is one of Shyamalan's most absurd in his career. An arena full of thousands of hysterical screaming tweens would erupt into a stampede panic sprinting for the exits the moment word started to spread that the place was surrounded by hundreds of heavily armed cops. I can't imagine any musical act agreeing to continue their show knowing that the building would be stormed any minute. It would be pure chaos inside. And sending that many cops to surround an entire arena and put a suspected serial killer trapped inside on high alert would certainly result in bloodshed, a standoff, possible hostages and a possible shootout among thousands of children. I can't imagine any police force would put such an idiotic, bumbling plan into action and not take a stealthier approach with plainclothes police officers and security watching the exits and the crowd.

I think the last part was kinda based off of Liz and Ted Bundys relationship. She called the police a few times telling them how she thought her boyfriend (Ted Bundy) was the killer. But she also was very back and forth with it because she couldn’t make up her mind.

I expected it to turn out that the FBI profiler was going to be his domineering mother. A weakish "twist" to be sure, but I think it would have made some sort of sense and explain why she was in the movie in the first place and why she had the same silhouette as Ghost Mom.

someone correct me but no one knows the butchers identity right? so what is the problem with him leaving with his daughter at the backstage exit? just show them your ID, tell them your daughter was the fan that got chosen and be gone. and also once lady Raven had to walk the butcher to the limo, while still inside the backstage hall, couldn't she just start telling all the fbi's in the hallway that he's the killer. i doubt he'd have time to use his phone to press his button. and one stupid thing is when the fbi start shooting the limo when there was a big crowd near the limo.

I completely agree with the points you raised... but I enjoyed the film in an ironic "so bad it's good" way, mainly because I knew from the first trailer that I wasn't going to take it seriously. I was expecting it. I know the film wasn't really meant to be taken like that, but that is part of "so bad it's good." The Room wasn't trying to be funny either. Obviously if this was a film I wanted to take seriously, let's say this new Alien film coming out, it would piss me off. To clarify, I'm absolutely Not someone who will ever say "turn your brain off" to enjoy a film. I hate that nonsense because it's nothing more than an excuse for lazy, poor quality filmmaking.. I will always promote leaving your brain switched On, including when you're watching a so bad it's good type film. You don't excuse the flaws. You acknowledge them and find ironic, unintentional humour in them, which requires keeping your brain on.

One point I think several of your critiques ignores is the fact that even backstage, the cops had all the doors covered. So them letting him past the SWAT line up, the assistant saying they could leave out the back, and him making the intense move of revealing himself to Lady Raven all make a lot more sense if we accept that there was no way out, even once he's backstage, without going through the cops.

You post an hour long video the same night I return to my nightly gaming sessions after replacing my computer monitor. What are the odds? 😉😂🤣 But yeah, saw this, felt it fits as background during the gaming session, and it worked. I will say something, no matter if we agree or disagree on something, as long as you avoid telling me I'm wrong to feel that way, I'm cool if we disagree on a movie. Now this, I'm not sure if we would agree or not, I'm not the biggest M Night fan to begin with, and the stuff I hear, I'm better off skipping this one anyways. We probably would agree, but can't say for sure. For me, M. Night feels like to film what Vince Russo is to wrestling, always throwing in a swerve for the sake of a swerve even if it makes sense or not. Anyway, enjoyed listening to this in the background. Thank you, Cody.

I do see what you're talking about with the some of the plotholes especially with the scene where he somehow changed and snuck out of the limo with nobody noticing. That one was egrigous enough for me to notice it. Or even how it seemed like that to insert Josh Hartnet digitally into the cop car at the end of the movie and the effect looked so bad I noticed it.

Sounds like it would’ve been better if this was all set up by the wife who was the actual killer trying to frame her husband for her crimes, while Josh was just a dad concerned about about his daughter being trapped with a killer. The wife setting all this up isn’t a M. Night level twist which more or less points to the fact you were right in the review and that this was a generic movie designed to showcase his daughter
