At this point, M. Night should just be paid to come up with premises for a better writer/director to execute. "From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan comes a Christopher Nolan film." Hell yeah!
I totally agree with that lol. The man comes up with great ideas. And we need more of that when it feels like we’re stuck in the age of remakes and unnecessary sequels. But he just can never seem to deliver, execution wise.
At that point you don't need M. Night anymore. Nolan can come up with his own premises just fine. M. Night should just hire a professional screenwriter or multiple and give them the premise and let them develop it without interference. His films would come out much better.

@@ButterCookie1984They're talking about how M. Night consistently comes up with great ideas showcased in movie trailers that make you want to see them. But he has genuinely some of the shittiest execution, and one of the worst track records of anyone in the film industry of his stature. Name a household director who is widely known, and who's still working in Hollywood after decades, who fucks up as bad as M. Night has. He's made like 5 great films, and 20 pieces of shit.

Yes! It’s obvious when the Butcher dons a blood red apron, like a butcher would. AND Lady Raven is also a super hero using her specific powers to foil the villian.
I’m sorry but after 25 years we just have to accept the fact that M Night is a literal alien that doesn’t understand actual human interaction. It’s the only logical explanation. No one in his movies ever acts like a real life person.

But they send 2 officers and an old lady FBI profiler into the house to capture him with tasers. Then, once he's assaulted an officer, been zapped 3 times, and is lying face down on the floor they all just stand around looking down at him. No one jumps on him and cuffs him. Good lord!!

I told my wife, it felt like a 2 hour music video of his daughter. Josh hartnet was the only bright spot, m nights daughter was very unconvincing as an actress.
People need to understand the difference between a hook (a serial killer is trapped inside an arena set up as a trap to get him) and a plot twist (the protagonist has been dead all along). Both can be "surprising" and "subversive" but a hook is part of the Act 1 setup and you reveal that to the audience in your blurb/synopsis. Plot twist (delivered at the midpoint, climax, epilogue - sometimes all three in VERY twisty thrillers) are delivered anywhere from Act 2-3 and usually are concealed because they CHANGE the expectation laid down by the setup. Trap is NOT spoiling a plot twist. It's just simply a story that is HIGH CONCEPT and has a HOOK.
Bit like Abigail, her being a child vampire was a hook NOT a twist. But everyone complained the film was spoiled by the trailer, I went in figuring any twists would be the film's specific takes on how vampires work in that universe 🤷♀️
Your criticisms of this film are the exact same criticisms I had of The Watchers, and now I am more convinced than ever that M. Night Shyamalan secretly wrote and directed The Watchers. I’m never going to see a Shyamalan movie in the theater again.
@@carpediem5882 Yeah it’s not a good look. But I saw an interview with Shyamalan, his daughter and Josh Hartnett promoting the movie. The way Shyamalan’s daughter was looking at him with such pride and affection made me realize the deep love they have for each other. With that type of love, I can understand why he did what he did. And he financed the movie himself anyway, so.. I just found out that this movie is actually doing well at the box office! I wasn’t expecting that. I might just check out a matinee showing out of curiosity. I’m willing to pay half price to give it a try. If I don’t like it, I’ll walk out, like I did with four other movies this year.
They shoulda just called it NepoTrap. It was a bait n switch wannabe launch for another of M Night’s kids. Josh Hartnett’s performance was the only thing watchable in this movie.
The part that ruined it for me was actually the casting and acting of the kidnap victim . Wasn’t scared, wasn’t messy, traumatised or anything. It looked like the director just got his son to play the role. It also doesn’t follow the mo of an actual serial killer profile either. This made the killer seem tame and not scary at all. If instead they cast someone else or tbh, didn’t even show the kid on the phone but you just heard him, that would have been far beter
***SPOILER***SPOILER**** ....My big issue was the fact that even if the wife reported the husband just to assure herself that he wasn't The Butcher, what sort of mother puts her kid in potential danger to prove it?
@@CodyLeachYT Oh but it's so much worse, because she left the partial receipt in one of his safe houses, where it's made clear no crimes had taken place, (which is why she still wasn't sure if he was the butcher) this whole multi million dollar sting operation, was predicated on a tip off to a house, that had no evidence inside, except the receipt, and they still went along with it. Instead of just staking out the safe house. So dumb.
Did anyone else Laugh out loud at that scene where its just the security footage of spencer being kidnapped and he’s cartoonishly yanked into the back of that van? I was literally having to restrain myself it was soooo uninteionally hilarious 😊

"There are things happening beyond our understanding." 😂 Mark had a real hard time w/ the absurd direction he was given. U can tell by the way he talks about his experience that he thinks M is a total hack 😂
The fact that I’m still going to see this trainwreck after hearing nothing but negative reviews is a true testament to how much I love Josh Hartnett and want that man to get his flowers. Woof.
How is it a train wreck. Chris stuckmann gave it a good review. At the end of the day reviews are OTHER PEOPLES opinions. Go see it and make your own. People bashed the Tarot movie. I watched it on Netflix last night and I liked it a lot
@@BoxingFan4Life I watch film reviews to get an idea of whether or not I’m going to like something and if it’ll be worth my coin to see it at the theater. Trap seems to across the board be objectively poorly written with most of the focus being put on M. Night’s daughter. I know myself well enough to know I’m not going to love this movie. But I’m still gonna see it, because like I said, I love Josh Hartnett and am glad to see him in a leading role again.
@@BoxingFan4Life Chris Stuckmann doesn't review movies... He's a kiss ass to the directors because he's a movie maker know. He's the only person that likes this movie.
Josh Hartnett's acting in Black Mirror is still one of the best performances I've ever seen him do. Him kicking out the chair at the end still gives me chills. I thought about all of the different ways that it could have played out and they really did choose the most heart wrenching way it could have gone. No sweet revenge. Just two men floating through the vast emptiness of space that have lost everything they have ever cared about.
I would’ve had a twist where the guy he kidnapped was the actual serial killer that he tracked down. Then the rest of the movie is him trying to escape the concert to get back to finish the killer. Kind of a well, I’ve got things going on, but my daughter wants to go to a concert.
The way Taylor Singh reacted after The Butcher revealed who he was doesn't make sense. Any normal person would've alerted the cops in the hallway right away.
I KNEW you were gonna say Signs for the example of intentional M Night humor that lands 😂 the scene where Graham walks in and sees Merrill and the kids wearing tinfoil hats is still hilarious to me
M. Night and his daughter said they discussed the music before even writing the script, and she did write all the songs for the movie. So you’re not wrong about it revolving around her as an artist. 😂 I’m seeing this tomorrow, even though you’re not the only one to say this isn’t so great. 🥴 But I honestly wasn’t expecting anything fantabulous knowing it’s M. Night, and he put his daughter as a centerpiece. I’m just going for my guy, Josh, in all honesty. 😆
Zombie is more likeable; he fully embraces the B movie, and it doesn't always work but can be fun most of the time. M Night gets too far up his own a$$ and most of his movies are average at best.
Rob Zombie draws inspiration for his films from 70s exploitation films nowadays we might call them grindhouse films. These films are dirty, grimy, dark and show the absolute worst in human nature. If you are not into those types of movies then you probably will not like anything Rob Zombie puts out. For those of us who like that style which I will admittedly say is very few we're okay with it. As far as m. Night S goes he is far less consistent with his projects. The only thing that they really have in common is there's going to be a plot twist.
@@toddbarts9916 You don't have to remind me of the type of movies that Rob Zombie produces. I've seen House of 1000 Corpses, Lords of Salem, and the 2 Halloween movies he directed as well as a few others. You're wrong about one major thing between M. Night Shyamalan and Rob Zombie though. Neither of them can write an effective film script to save their life
Thank you for the review ( I didn't know it was an M Night movie) ! I actually got a birthday Cameo from you today from my best friend Trish and it absolutely made my day.
@@bhillis99The entire story literally makes zero sense dude. The entire plot relies purely on the cops not knowing who the killer is. I thought this was gonna be part of the unbreakable universe, we already had Mr glass ,the beast and the protector, this movie would've introduced the butcher
Thank you for this. After I got hit with Long Covid and I lost my last remaining braincells, I started questioning whether a story is stupid or if it's just me. You've been a big help on that front today. If I behaved like this guy during a major law enforcement operation or tried to mess with a bike while in police custody for ANYTHING, I'd get two in the heart and one in the head. And I'm 5'2 and I wear orthopedic shoes. His plot armor is adamantine.
Totally totally totally understand your criticisms. I honestly just had a blast with this because of how quirky and off-putting Josh Hartnett was in this, lmao. Also, this is such weird reasoning but I love the Hitman game franchise and so to have a chunk of this film be Hartnett sneaking around, getting key cards, causing distractions and accidents, and getting past security just really brought out a whole other level of enjoyment to me 😂 I'll tell ya what though, I am super excited for Cuckoo.
The humor of Trap absolutely landed. The movie goes downhill the moment he takes the singer hostage, which was completely unnecessary. He could have easily escaped. The ONLY info the FBI has is that the killer has a tattoo on his right arm. Daughter is given some fake tattoos ... PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
So before the cops allowed him to pick up bike, let's not forget in the previous seen he charged at them, fatally injuring one, then charged the other. Did they used the assault riffle they had pointed at him? No, they chose to put it down to taze him.
I saw people hating on it earlier and decided to go in without watching any reviews and genuinely had a great time, yes you have to suspend disbelief repeatedly but it’s definitely one of those shut your brain off and enjoy the ride films … I feel like people are just hating on m night for the sake of hating on him these days don’t get me wrong much of it is earned as for his most previous work but this actually felt like a good effort and man Josh hartnett was awesome! Left me wanting more … also as for his daughter I feel like if people didn’t even know she was his daughter they’d have nothing to say as far as nepotism or her acting, it didn’t bother me at all
Scenes that killed me - THE FRYER SCENE - THE BATHROOM SCENE BC HUH - THE RAVEN LADY TRYING TO TALK TO HIM LIKE HIS MOM - THE END WHY WAS HE LAUGHING LIKE THAT IS HE SERIOUS SINISTER OR SILLY SINSTER -THE MOVIE Things I liked ❤Josh Hartnett ❤
Saw it yesterday and I thought it was terrible! The movie was too busy promoting his daughter’s concert and it was so obvious that the way how the story unfold at the end of the movie felt rushed where they should’ve done that sooner. And the way how they set up the twist was so convenient making me scratching my head rather than being shocked by. All thanks to a nonsensical dialogue. Plus, The suspense and thrills were so dull and generic.
Also why was none of the fbi actively looking at cameras to see this creepy man walking around at multiple points in sometimes remote areas of the stadium? Lol
Was pumped for this movie but it was absolutely terrible. The ONLY saving grace it has is Hartnett's performance as a psychopath, he kills it. But even that doesnt save this disaster
I saw it a few days ago and was gob-smacked at how underwhelming this movie was... Here's my pitch for a better version - pull a From Dusk Til Dawn with the same storyline. He IS a serial killer and they ARE looking for him at this concert, but then half way through, the singer/dancers/stage crew etc reveal they are vampires and turn it in to a huge blood bath by locking the doors to the arena and killing everyone... then Josh becomes the 'good' guy, (similar to George Clooney) trying to get his daughter and others out of there. Easy.
Saleka was not the only daughter who benefited. Ishana Night Shyamalan, another daughter, was director of the Dakota Fanning movie "The Watchers" that also came out earlier this year.
I was saying to my Mrs after watching the film, why is the signing parts so unnecessarily long . Googled the actress and find out with is a song writer and artist. Makes so much sense now as to why half the film was focused on her singing. The cynic in me believes this film was created to promote his daughter's career nothing more . and why was the concert during the day ?
The part where she's playing the piano at their house... instead of focusing on her, i wish they'd used that time to slowly zoom into josh's face, and then fade into maybe memories of how he turned out that way, the mother relationship or like intertwined video of his kidnap victim in the basement and others that he victimized, or even like stuff that was happening back at the concert venue. The frustrated profiler lady and swat looking around confused about what happened. Etc. Mighta been more interesting.
I really enjoyed it, I found it intense. Yes I was questioning some logic while watching it but hey I went for entertainment and was entertained. The M Night cameo always gets me.
Everything that happened during the concert to continually propel him along - the employee flat-out explaining the trap, the police on the radio literally telling everyone exactly what the killer would do so he would know to do something different, etc.. I honestly thought it was going to turn out that this was all in his imagination and there really WASN'T a trap, but his guilty conscious was going to give him away. HAD that been the direction all of those stupid contrivances would have totally been fine.
Cody, thank you for comments about this movie. I literally walked out of the this film and was like wtf did I just watch. I had an AMC employee asked me was it good and I was like hello no!! I think what could have been more interesting is if we were constantly wondering if he is the serial killer and then we find out he is or isn’t. I alway appreciate your take on movies.
The film was of course intended as a concert movie for Saleka (M. Night's daughter). The real problem was when the story as well as the pace of the film was subordinate to that, which was evident when the audience was forced to listen to complete songs even as Josh was trying to evade the police and FBI. While the original setting was already contrived to the extreme, the third act after they got away was so preposterous that it was actually insulting to the viewers, treating them as if they are all six-year-olds. By the time they got outside, Lady Raven already knew Cooper was the killer. She would identify him to the police and his family would know. Short of killing her or holding her hostage, the only thing left for him is to run. Yet he allowed her to take him home and visit his family. What was he doing - trying to pretend to be good daddy for an additional five minutes? As you said what Lady Raven did made no sense either, and the third act was simply there to let Saleka instead of Josh becoming the focus in the third act.
I can’t believe how polarizing this movie is, while I understand the flaws, it’s one of my favourite movies so far this year, but I am the “perfect” audience for a film like this
The plot thematically ends halfway through the movie. After the final escape idea, the movie is over. Everything in the 3rd acted is forced and illogical.SPOILERS ..... ..... .... .... ..... Once he tells Raven, who he is. The movies over, when he says you can stop and let us out here. You do it...you know who he is, what he looks like, his name, his f**king daughters name, why go to the house and all that. I get you want to save the kid, but. ...... I was really hoping the third ending was going to show that his wife was the actual mastermind and verbally abused jim for being dumb like his mother would. Or at least have Sam Jackson show up and let him out of the police truck.....SOMETHING!!! PINK BIKE AND PIE
....that his wife was the actual mastermind and verbally abused jim for being dumb like his mother would. Oooh I like that. That could have almost saved the movie.
Another issue I have is that law enforcement would have been able to get a photo from the wife since they were all over the house. They all should’ve had his pic with them! Even his DMV photo!
This movie made me so mad I almost left the theater. So many things were just impossibly stupid. Like is the FBI looking at the cameras? If they were they would see this guy being completely suspicious roaming around the stadium. When Raven had the totally illogical idea to go to the butchers house I was screaming! Why would you do that? It makes no sense to go to his home! Then when she gets there she tells the driver to wait outside. Why? He has a much better chance than you! Which also makes me wonder why a famous popstar has zero security but whatever. Then she steals his phone, goes in the bathroom and does an instagram live stream. Call 911!! Wtf are you doing? Then the ending where they for some reason want to capture him alive. This dude has killed and mutilated 12 people. Shoot him!! Then when he's being carried off to the jail these freaking idiot cops allow his daughter to run pass all of them and hug her dad. What protocol is this? What if he had taken the lil girl hostage? There are over 100 things like this in this movie that is so freaking illogical.
How about the rescued guy, Spencer, still standing shivering in a police blanket on the side of the road waiting for Lady Raven to drive up and give him a hug. 🤣😂🤣.
I just got back from seeing it myself. I didn't watch your review before seeing the movie but when I first saw it show up in my feed, I was sure I'd come out of it thinking "insulted" was a bit much. You have my sincere apology. "Insulted" is, if anything, a massive understatement. This was not a movie. This was an advertisement for Saleka Shyamalan's music career.
Frankly you're very generous with this review. Hartnett was as always very watchable but I also felt 2nd hand awkwardness for him in the ridiculous situations/interactions who was made to act out. His daughter has a beautiful voice but not as strong in acting for such a prominent role.
You definitely left some sh*t out that you could have ranted even more about 🤣🤣 I’ll fill it in though… how about the fact that lady raven in about 2 and a half minutes was able to give some vague description of a house somewhere to her followers and they were able to find it and rescue a hostage in under 2 minutes 😂😂😂 or the fact that Hartnett gauged out a swat members eyes and still only got Tased, no guns drawn at all 😂😂😂😂🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
The best thing about watching the film is that it led me to finding your review video Cody! Everything you said I was going yes yes yes. Trapped has to be the worst film I’ve seen this year because of not using the amazing premise it had to make a plausible film that, as you rightly said, didn’t insult our intelligence. I am though looking forward to seeing your other reviews to find films that you actually do enjoy! Keep up the great work!
I appreciate your review. I enjoyed my experience. I agree Josh Harnett was excellent as was Ariel Donoghue. The one thing that really annoyed me is that Harnett is like 6’4 and stood out in every scene because of it and they didn’t seem to flag him? 😂 I will say I didn’t feel as if this was an ad for his daughter’s music at all during the movie.
Just finished it. I thought it was pretty good. Definately some flaws with pacing and certain actors. But Josh Hartnett is amazing. I also really liked the ending! Call me crazy
Great review. He normally sucks you in and you willingly suspend your disbelief....but not in this one. I was hoping there might be a twist that reveals it to be part hallucination, dream, purgatory or something...that would explain the obvious silliness.
Are people still holding out hope for Night? I kind of respect that, but I checked out fully after Glass. One of the worst movie experiences I've ever had. Night is the king of great premises ruined by nepotism, an inflated ego, stubbornness, and god-awful dialogue.
@@niktour352 It took me a minute to remember what you're talking about, tried to repress that movie. But yes....just yes. Top 3 terrible Night decisions.
Hilarious opening comment to this review video 😂. I saw this movie yesterday. I didn’t realize the singer Raven was M. Knight’s daughter until the credits. I found the movie to be enjoyable and entertaining despite being stupid and ridiculous. So I agree with your review 100% but still enjoyed the movie. Is it possible this was M. Knight’s attempt at a comedy? Haha.
I’ve always loved Josh and glad to see him back in a leading type role. I hope he continues to get work and this not hurt his career! I enjoyed it just for the fact Josh was the main. M Night’s daughter though. Why?
I thought it was gonna be like the Hitman game, but with the killer trying to get out. Sneak around, kill or incapacitate people, trick people, impersonate people, exploit aspects of the environment. There was a bit of that, but not nearly as much as I thought and not nearly as clever either. In the end, he escapes because of A LOT of plot conveniences, which should be ESPECIALLY off limits in a movie solely about escaping. It just cheapens the escape.
I legit though the twist was the FBI profiler was Harnetts abusive mom who cleaned up her act in her old age and knew how to catch serial killers because she helped creare one. But no, just pie and bike spokes.
wow, I'm glad you posted this review. I'm an M. Night fan, i even like his more ridiculous stuff that most people don't (like Lady In The Water) but your review was all I needed to see of this movie. As a musician myself I typically don't like movies that are music heavy (by that I mean movies where music is a part of the storyline.) I go to records and concerts for that, not to movies. Apart from that, it just doesn't look all that interesting. But still anytime i see M. Night's name attached to a film, I will always be intrigued.
I liked it. This guy is a good actor. The pie eating scene was pretty good too so i didn't mind them leaving the concert area. That being said, it obviously has problems. Like how they got Spencer out in under 3 minutes since finding out on social media a few clues of where he was 😂.
The village was the last decent one it says a lot about the society we live in and how the wool is pulled over our eyes with fear mongering idk why people hated it, maybe cause it was a love story?
