Interesting info. I'm a flight nurse, been working in all aspects of healthcare about 32 years. (ER, ICU, Paramedic/Ambulance, etc) For anyone watching, please be aware that many of these "provider" skills are done by Paramedics in the prehospital environment. Such as the FAST exam, chest tubes, surgical airways, etc. I really wish nurses knew more about the Paramedic scope of practice, because Paramedics know what Nurses do. It makes a better team when we know the roles of all the players and understand each other better.

Not all paramedics can do those things. Totally depends on protocols in the area they are working in. Also just because they can do these things doesn’t mean they get done well and it’s never a bad idea to repeat or check placement. I have seen lots of these come in and the tubes are in the wrong area, FAST is + but the medic said it wasn’t. As a provider you should also be aware that it’s all our job to check and double check because nobody is perfect and gets it right all the time. I spent more than a decade working on an ambulance in some of the roughest areas of this country prior to becoming an RN and I see way too many “paraGods” who come in telling the nurses they are nothing more than a drs order taker. If you want respect you have to give them respect too.

I really wish paramedics would stop lying to themselves. It's the patients that suffer when you have an unjustified ego

Paramedics don’t do chest tubes and absolutely NO surgical airways.. STOP ❌ lying to the public. 🙄

I guess as a previous bird/parakeet owner I could tune it out. In the trauma field of medicine, one should be able to pick and choose what they are tuning in to. In other words be able to block out the unnecessary, and focus on what is important. Multiple things are happening and multiple people or staff are talking.

This looks simple but it’s fantastic and thorough lecture 👏. Obviously this lady has been exposed to trauma care for a significant period of time. I will just like to add that in the secondary survey one should look at the tip of the male penis. A fresh bleed issuing from the urethra may suggest urethral injury from pelvic fractures. In addition Pelvic fractures can cause massive hidden haematoma. This can be a cause of severe shock in trauma victims. Also in the secondary survey one should do a digital rectal examination. Penetrating bone spicules from pelvic fractures may be felt.
