TØP 'Kitchen Sink' lyrics: "I'm a kitchen sink. You don't know what that means? 'Cause a kitchen sink to you is not a kitchen sink to me."

Blurryface started in this album as sort of an alter ego/personification of fears/negative thoughts, etc. However in later albums, he takes the shape of a person and an entire world and story develops

Just finished watching Part 1, now I'm here ^^. Am only halfway through the video, but wanna say thanks for not only reacting to the song, but also analysing the lyrics + the MV 🙌🏻 very interesting to hear your thoughts/your perspective on the song. Cant wait to see more of it ^^ Have a great day ✌🏻

Im so glad that you are starting the twenty one pilots journey! I have been a longtime fan of TØP and its nice to see their music getting analyzed. They often make music with metaphoric representation of mental illness and such and sometimes its hard to understand what they mean exactly. I would say there is a lot of their songs with really deep meaning so I can't wait to see those dissected!

Thanks for the comment. I'm going to share what I think might be going on, but i am always happy to be corrected or take a different perspective as i can only say things from my point of view, my learning history, my culture, my experiences etc, and I genuinely enjoy learning from other people too. So super excited for this one!

Stuart, I love your interpretation. I think they are spot on. I agree with you that Tyler and Josh both value their creativity. The black marks on Tyler’s hands and neck to me represent an attack on the parts of their creative that matter to them, being Tyler’s voice (throat) and Josh’s drumming (hand/wrist). I agree that if you initially grow up in a fairly caring home, childhood does seem innocent and carefree. This is often associated with carefree smells such as mum’s baking, running in fields of long grass, favourite foods eaten in dens or treehouses etc. I think the lines about making money refer to how as kids we dream about having loads of money (sports, cars, big homes, buying what we want) and it buying us freedom to create/explore and protection from our fears. Yet, in later life we see money creating stress that keeps us away from the ability to be creative. Plus, the freedom to fully explore the possibilities becomes less as we are tied to the hamster wheel and fears associated with being successful enough, part of the ‘in crowd’ of high achievers rather than an outsider take over. Paying off debts, like student loans or mortgages entering us into a circular seemly never ending trap. I think Tyler feeds off his fear and yet is swamped by it at the same time. He channels his insecurities to fuel his creativity and his creativity to fight against his fear and push him forward. It’s like a perpetual circle. ⭕️ Yet knows doing this is causing pressure as he is becoming successful and the stress of this is leading him to become depressed and therefore he is becoming a blurryface, or numb and distant to his own sense of self. As an aside, it’s funny because when I first saw this video and the TØP storyline start to unfold early on, I couldn’t help but make an analogy between this and the movie IT by Stephen King. The red colouring, being like both a representation of the red balloon 🎈 tempting youngish children away towards the ‘dead lights’ and IT in the form of Peneywise the clown with his red nose exploiting the children’s multiple vulnerabilities, insecurities and fear(s). Later on in the TØP storyline the ‘dead lights’ become significant in another way too. The idea of the ‘tribe’ being significant too. In IT the tribe was ‘the Losers Club’, in TØP lore it is the Banditos the rebel group in Trench fighting against the bishops in Dema.

@@TherapistReactsOfficial Don’t bother with the old version, it’s so outdated and has clunky production, although Tim Curry is brilliant as Pennywise. The more recent film adaptations were brilliant, but then I’m a Stephen King book fan.

I really like what you are doing by splitting into parts. There are always trolls out there that know everything. You help break it down and it goes along with my current trauma therapy. I don’t always get references as quickly or at times might miss something that is deep and I need to think about.

As for the good old days of being a child and being taken care of vs. growing up and being stressed out, I think many adults tend to forget that children have plenty of stress. Once you get older, your fears as a child seem small and ridiculous even, but they were plenty real when you were a child.

I've seen many people trying to analyze twenty one pilots, also dove deep into the "universe" and lore of it all, but you?... Spot on! New to all of it, yet analyzing it that well (meaning i LOVE your perspective) and catching so many details? Impressive. I am thrilled to see more, especially when we get to Dima and the bishops (don't want to take away too much here). ❤️

I really like your deep dive and I guarantee, you can never go too deep with his writing and the images/lore he creates. And Tyler is often vague enough so that his music and art can be interpreted in ways most meaningful to the listener, so no interpretation is wrong. I liked how you picked up on his mother singing him to sleep and the three Ss. Tyler was raised in a very supportive home. But unfortunately he faced major mental health issues. So he has used his music to battle against that and to fight to stay alive, which you saw in Car Radio. He personified his fears and anxieties in the Blurryface album so that he could confront them. Blurryface (Nico) is the one who has greatest control over him and what he creates. We also see Blurryface in Fairly Local. Josh often will dye his hair with the era colors. If you noticed Josh’s hair in Heavydirtysoul, his hair was yellow, which was a bridge to the Trench era. Yellow represents hope 🌼 The Trench album is a deeper dive into Blurryface (Nico) and the Bishops. Tyler created an entire world with Dema - a walled city controlled by the Bishops. He wanted to create a world where he could confront them and explore the ways they control him. The theme of cycles will pop up, which sometimes makes the timelines confusing, but I think that’s intentional. It’s hard to break the cycles of mental illness. Excited to continue the journey!! I’ve loved your Ren reactions. Ren and TOP are my two favorites ❤️ And there are a lot of similarities, especially in not being constrained by genres.

Love this format; you're picking up on a ton of symbolism from re-watching the video a few times and it makes for really interesting commentary! I'm sure this has already been suggested, but for the sake of continuity and understanding the lore, please watch these videos in order (but certainly feel free to add others; these are just the most closely related, story-wise): Heavydirtysoul (already watched) Jumpsuit Nico and the Niners Levitate Saturday The Outside I Am Clancy Overcompensate

i love hearing such a deep look into the lyrics and the meanings, thank you so much. also quick note on the music video, the first guy in the background of the loungeroom at josh's house is his brother and then at tyler's house it's one of his brothers. and the families at the end are their entire real families

I love the intuitive questions you bring up. Only Tyler and Josh have the answers, but I never thought about Josh’s hair being a lighter red indicating that maybe he is less influenced. Or Tyler pulling the beanie off his head possibly meaning blurry face has less influence during his singing. Only TØP knows some of those details but your intelligent questions are inspiring

Thanks for sharing your perspective! I think for Tyler, the singer/songwriter, his greatest insecurities concern the things he creates. That’s the reason he paints his neck and hands black. He creates with his voice and hands.

Sometimes, you hear “Used to play pretend, used to play pretend, bunny” in live shows Which still works if you consider it a callback to Heavydirtysoul. “Death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit.” Blurryface taunting Tyler. And the concept of mortality and time is quite a running theme in the music.

Loving the way you analyze their lyrics AND videos, their messages are really deep and they get even deeper as they grew musically so I'm really excited to see you react to more songs from them, I would recomend ones like Leave the city, Redecorate, The hype and Neon Gravestones, also some from their earlier works like anathema, forest, goner and kitchen sink. Keep up with the great videos! Also hope to see in future videos your reactions to the whole DEMA story that the guys created. Love this!

I love you analysis, you bring such an interesting perspective! The video was filmed in their childhood homes with their actual family. To me, the part where their families shout at them, look a bit like a funeral as if their dreams died (this was never confirmed, just my personal thought on it).

I would love to see a video of you talking about memory and partially memory loss because I can't remember almost my whole youth and almost always need information from outside or photographs to remember. And often I can't remember even with stuff like that. And it freaks me out because I always hope to understand more of me and my development and why I am who I am today. Are there any tips? My therapists I had in the past always try to stay in the now. But in some way I would love to remember more to understand and work on that memories.

I am a big twenty one pilots fan. Would you cover RU-vid series or short films available on RU-vid? I work with a lot of design for psychological series or videos and it would be very interesting to see an analysis on series such as _Boisvert and Alantutorial even if it's just for a couple of videos without getting copyrighted I think. People use these types of media to convey fascinating themes and motifs that tie back into mental health which I would love to see. Love your videos!
