The fact that he turned a routine traffic stop into a drug search is amazing. The fact that he KNEW who were passengers on the bus makes this a purposeful and unlawful search. The police claimed they didn’t go through the students personal items, but the video showed that wasn’t true….I AM SHOCKED!!!! (Note sarcasm). That one player pretty much nailed it when she asked, "How did we go from a traffic stop to this?" Yes, officer, HOW did they come to THAT??? I mean, driving in the wrong lane is a minor stop, a warning to the driver, at best. Possibly a small citation, even. But actually entering the bus, making a blatant, intimidating and thinly veiled threat to the team on the bus, and then searching all of their belongings was totally out of line and inappropriate. Not only did he insinuate that they were carrying drugs, but he made it clear he thought they were SELLING drugs by mentioning 'anything that could be used to WEIGH drugs, or scales'. WTAF?!?! WHY???? Well, we ALL know why........
Yep, that speech was really weird and definitely attempted to intimidate. It sounded like he thought he'd pulled over a bus full of gangsters in the "hood" (just a bad stereotype for a dumb example). I used to fequently drive this area from Atlanta when my then fiancé now husband was assigned to Fort Stewart(Liberty County) military base. I know first hand that the small police/sheriff's departments follow their own rules. They have arrested and pulled over so many military members or family members for minor violations. It's a good old boy system in Hinesville/Liberty County. I am still waiting on the law the driver broke to be pulled over in the first place. The Marijuana statement was a threat from the moment law enforcement saw the color of the students skin. It was accusatory, meant to put fear in those young ladies. I have been through countless checkpoints in Liberty County during the holiday or 3 day weekends. That's when the law enforcement targets the military the most. That was over 10 years ago. I am sure the DOJ investigation will have an interesting outcome. I am so glad that the President of this HBCU is calling this behavior out. Disgusting and utterly RIDICULOUS! As a woman of color and graduate of an HBCU I have experienced racism even as a professional. The sheriff needs to sit down...sounds like he didn't even write the speech he read.
I agree with most of what you say, 2.5 years stationed at Ft Stewart back in the 80s. I'm inclined to believe it was seeing the young people and only a couple adults that triggered the search thinking they would get away with this violation. They did not discriminate ( against us military members) they put as many of in jail as they could, issued tickets that didn't happen ( speeding, running a light, ) and they didn't care if We were white or black as long as we fed their money making enterprise they were happy. This shouldn't have happened, I wish one if the coaches would've questioned the legality of it but I am not blaming them for what happened this was 100% BS policing.
