I recommend to look into QGIS for any map animation that shall be based on proper geodata (e.g. from naturalearth). As a specialized tool for geospatial analysis it comes with an intial hurdle and learning curve, but the result speaks is just so much better: Different details per zoom level, selection of e.g. cities in a buffer around a route, capable coloring, geo features like capitals, airports or mountain range. At minimum only 3-5 features of QGIS are really needed, and a bunch of png files can be exported in 10-15 minutes. Don't get me wrong, I am as much of a DaVinci Resolve fan as anybody watching this channel. DVR is just not the right tool.

@@Despacitoporelmundo I am not good at putting out tutorials, but feel free to reach out to me (my channel will have my email on display for a few weeks). Also have a few map animations on display there (the channel is otherwise rather empty), the maps animations are just the sequence of exported png files, and a bit of speed ramping would further spice them up. Datasource is "naturalearth" plus a bicycle GPX track.

@itoporelmundo I started* to write up my workflow in a GitHub repo, and added the URL as a link to my channel. As the most recent version of QGIS now exports not just pngs but optionally a video container I want to update my workflow as well. My biggest motivation has always been: In the style of middle-age explorer maps I want to have map details close to the route, and almost no details further away from the route. Such maps practically do not exist in the digital domain, rather a track is slapped on top of whatever basemap was there. Which makes them hard to read and distracting. "We" in the digital age will never reach the quality of printed books again, but at least can strive for that level. Biggest side effect when using data from NaturalEarth (licenced under the public domain): Full ownership of the map. FULL +++ OWNERSHIP! (If you ever tried to include a map in any proper publication you know the importance.) *) just placeholder files for the moment. "Stay tuned".

I do a lot of cycling and try to make cycling videos. In cycling we use GPX files to plot a route, it's just a text file with GPS coordinates. Would be very cool if you could import that into DR.

@tinthefatty
@tinthefatty 4 месяца назад
The key is to overlay the data in your GPX file onto the map. Use whatever mapping software you normally use (Google Maps works fine). Load/import your GPX file, then zoom to the area of interest. Now do a screen capture or image export to obtain a map image (Route_Map_MI) showing your route. This image will be the reference you use to draw the mask on the background node. Then hide your route, and do another screen capture or image export to obtain another map image WITHOUT your route (Map_MI). This image should be identical in size and view of your Route_Map_MI, and will be used for the actual animation. These images have no transparency layer, so you would not be able to do the Ocean_Colour_BG trick. Follow Casey's tutorial, but first connect Route_Map_MI to the ColorCorrector, then draw your mask following your route. Once you are happy with your mask, break the connection for Route_Map_MI, and instead connect Map_MI to ColorCorrector. And Bob's your uncle.

Hello Casey...I don't know if this would be possible, but would you make a video showing how to make motion graphics like MagnatesMedia does?
@GrantSR
@GrantSR 4 месяца назад
I really, REALLY want to learn how they do the animation where a page from a document dropped down onto a desk, then they highlight text within that document. Sometimes they even animate some of the diagrams on the document. THEN, they drop more pages on top, slightly askew, and do it all again. I know they use the transform tool. But HOW do they use transformations and animations to make it look like a real-ish page, with slight curves on the edges, shadows, etcetera. You could make a 20 video series on this, with lots of details for each step, and i would watch every one. There has to be a long list of things that one would learn (for use elsewhere) just by learning this.

I for the life of me cannot find a tutorial for a similar instance, but the center of the view is on the camera. and would be cool if you could edit the line and the view moved with it, so the view movement should not be done with key frames

I do a lot of map animations, but I’m always frustrated by resolution. It’s purely my own ignorance, but I’ve never been able to figure it out. I want to use a large satellite view (like from Google Earth) and still maintain visual clarity when zooming-in to the travel path. The RU-vid channel GeographyNow uses motion graphics that are similar to what I’m trying for, as an example. I just can’t seem to understand the concept enough to make it work. Anybody have any suggestions?

@CaseyFaris

It's actually kinda hard to make dotted lines in Fusion. Weird I know. One way would be to make a dotted line in a graphics program and bring that in as art then reveal the line with a mask.

It's actually very easy make dotted line in fusion. You write the route path with paint node and in section "stroke controls" you shift the position "spacing" slider to the right and Voilà -done. You can change the size, colors etc.

@michaelsopunov
@michaelsopunov 4 месяца назад
Right-click + „connect to“ as keywords for further search :) It is possible
@LilStraggler
@LilStraggler 4 месяца назад
It's easy. At 8:04 in the video, Casey says you should remove 'polygon1polyline'. If you don't remove it, you can actually use that datapoint to make animating along a path easier. Just get a transform node, left-click the centre button > connect to > polygon1polyline. This will add it as a modifier to your node. Go to the modifiers tab and you'll see controls for it. I believe the control to move your element along the path is called 'position' but I'm not sure. Keyframe that yourself and voila, you saved a couple minutes. There's even a way to rotate your element based on the path to make the motion more fluid. Plenty of videos on RU-vid for how to do that. Edit: I also just thought of a way to make it even easier with expressions. If you left-click the 'length' control on the polygon node and export it, you can use that in an expression on the polyline modifier. It's pretty easy and useful in-case your polyline has some fancy easing.

I appreciate the video, but it's hard to see the nodes they are not clear and when i drag the car on to the node section like you did you get a merge 3, i don't get that i have to add one then there is no way to connect that merge 3 to merge 2 it does not work at that point for me version 19 STUDIO anyways. Not sure why i can't get the car to show over the map like you have, i tried for over 1hr to fix it but it won't work In your video it would be super helpful if you put up a full screen cap of your NODES when you do something or explain a bit more as it seems so odd that part will not work no matter what for me. Many thanks for the video i enjoy then and have picked up a lot from you already

I appreciate your tutorials, but for you to say that this is simpler than After effects... Well, I have to disagree. Seems awfully convoluted. I'll stick with it, but I am being pulled back to AE ( A similar map animation I did 8 years agio took all of 5 minutes in AE. I'm a big fan of Layers... )...I'll take your world for it that this gets easier, but I'm skeptical. Thank you for the effort.
