Actually, depends on the car but often better to face the car and be able to monitor movement both ahead of you and behind (most cars are reflective). Also, if you leave your vehicle always check the back seats when you reenter the vehicle, especially in a large vehicle where this isn't as easy to see. Also useful is a device that can detect GPS transmissions. A friend of mine in Tennessee just had someone that attempted to follow her home after placing a GPS tracker under her rear bumper. Luckily, he followed too closely, she freaked out and the police became involved and arrested the man, but these types of tracking devices are smaller and easier to obtain than ever.

Great tips. But really you have to accept that when you travel internationally, you are...On.Your.Own. I have friends who got stuck in Israel on October 7. They got no help from the US Embassy, were not allowed to shelter there. They hunkered down in the hotel for a couple of days while they reached out to their US congressman, got advice, and ultimately were guided out to the airport where they had an arranged flight out of Israel to Egypt and ultimately back to the states. Nowadays just about every overseas destination is a potential hotspot. Only you can determine if it's worth the risk.

I also suggest getting the travel insurance, a friend of mine needed emergency surgery in Mexico, and it was during a US national holiday when her health insurance company was not available to be reached, they would not operate until the bill was paid in advance. Thanks to the travel insurance, it covered a significant portion, then she had to put the rest on a credit card. Thankfully she was able to get some reimbursement from her insurance company after the fact, despite having surgery outside the country. But basically, after this I learned that it is a very good idea to get the travel insurance. If you covered this Carrie and I happened to miss it, I apologize. And as a side note, where she was at in Mexico she said that she received excellent medical care.

When traveling with friends we make a spread sheet of emergency contacts, allergies and medications in case you or multiple people in your party are unresponsive/unconscious. I traveled to Mexico this past year with my friend and found out she was allergic to latex. Never would have known.

As a former security and intel contractor, I can't stress enough how important the first tip is. Always let the US embassy know you're in country and always know how to get to the embassy in case of an emergency. Also, pay attention to State Department actions and warnings. If the State Department evacuates its embassies or consulates, that's a really good indicator to get out. Similarly, if State says 'don't travel here', then don't travel there. Those warnings are for a good reason and you run a serious risk of getting imprisoned or taken hostage. Don't be a dumbass like Brittney Griner and be the reason that a dangerous arms dealer is now at loose in the world again. Be a responsible person and listen to the warnings and advisories. Lastly, learn a little bit about where you're going. I used to travel all the time and before I went to a country (whether for work or recreation), I read up about that country's culture and history. I'd learn some basic phrases such as how to introduce myself, ask for the police and ask for help or the directions to a hospital. This is super simple and easy (especially in the age of the internet). It goes a long ways to getting on well with the locals and also being safe. Locals that are friendly with you are more likely to warn you (local relations that we cultivated saved our ass twice in Afghanistan) if you're about to be in danger. Plus it's just common courtesy.
